3 Time after Pentecost A woman finds healing by touching Jesus cloak, and a girl is restored to life when he takes her by the hand. In both cases a boundary is crossed: in Jesus time the hemorrhaging woman was considered ritually unclean, polluting others by her touch, and anyone who touched a corpse also became unclean. In Mark s gospel Jesus breaks down barriers, from his first meal at a tax collector s house to his last breath on the cross as the temple curtain is torn in two. We dare to touch Jesus in our uncleanness and to live as a community that defines no one as an outsider. Gathering The Holy Spirit calls us together as the people of God. Gathering Music Welcome 3

4 *Confession and Forgiveness Blessed be the holy Trinity, + one God, full of compassion and mercy, abounding in steadfast love. Amen. Trusting God s promise of forgiveness, let us confess our sin against God and one another. Silence for reflection. Eternal God our creator, in you we live and move and have our being. Look upon us, your children, the work of your hands. Forgive us all our offenses, and cleanse us from proud thoughts and empty desires. By your grace draw us near to you, our refuge and our strength; through Jesus Christ our Savior. Amen. Neither this world nor your life is so broken that God cannot restore it to wholeness. Trust and believe that, after separation, reconciliation is possible. Your sin is forgiven and God welcomes us to beloved community. 5 *Prayer of the Day Let us pray. Loving and merciful God, we implore you to hear the prayers of your people. Be our strong defense against all harm and danger, that we may live and grow in faith and hope, through Jesus Christ, healer and sovereign. Amen. Word God speaks to us in scripture reading, preaching, and song. -- Quiet reflection First Reading Lamentations 3:22-33 The steadfast love of God never ceases, God s mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. God is my portion, says my soul, therefore I will hope in God. God is good to those who are patient, to the soul that seeks after God. It is good that one should wait quietly for the salvation of the Holy. It is good for one to bear the yoke in youth, to sit alone in silence when God has imposed it, to put one s mouth to the dust (there may yet be hope), to give one s cheek to the smiter, and be filled with insults. For the Holy One will not reject forever. Although causing grief, God will have compassion out of an abundance of steadfast love; for God does not willingly afflict or grieve anyone. 7 Second Reading 2 Corinthians 8:7-15 Now as you excel in everything in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in utmost eagerness, and in our love for you so we want you to excel also in this generous undertaking. I do not say this as a command, but I am testing the genuineness of your love against the earnestness of others. For you know the generous act of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, so that by his poverty you might become rich. And in this matter I am giving my advice: it is appropriate for you who began last year not only to do something but even to desire to do something now finish doing it, so that your eagerness may be matched by completing it according to your means. For if the eagerness is there, the gift is acceptable according to what one has not according to what one does not have. I do not mean that there should be relief for others and pressure on you, but it is a question of a fair balance between your present abundance and their need, so that their abundance may be for your need, in order that there may be a fair balance. As it is written, The one who had much did not have too much, and the one who had little did not have too little. Word of God, word of life. Thanks be to God. 7

8 *Gospel Acclamation The holy gospel according to Mark, the 5 th chapter. Glory to you, O God. *Gospel Reading Mark 5:21-43 When Jesus had crossed again in the boat to the other side, a great crowd gathered around him; and he was by the sea. Then one of the leaders of the synagogue named Jairus came and, when he saw him, fell at his feet and begged him repeatedly, My little daughter is at the point of death. Come and lay your hands on her, so that she may be made well, and live. So Jesus went with him. And a large crowd followed him and pressed in on him. Now there was a woman who had been suffering from hemorrhages for twelve years. 8

9 She had endured much under many physicians, and had spent all that she had; and she was no better, but rather grew worse. She had heard about Jesus, and came up behind him in the crowd and touched his cloak, for she said, If I but touch his clothes, I will be made well. Immediately her hemorrhage stopped; and she felt in her body that she was healed of her disease. Immediately aware that power had gone forth from him, Jesus turned about in the crowd and said, Who touched my clothes? And his disciples said to him, You see the crowd pressing in on you; how can you say, Who touched me? He looked all around to see who had done it. But the woman, knowing what had happened to her, came in fear and trembling, fell down before him, and told him the whole truth. Jesus said to her, Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace, and be healed of your disease. While he was still speaking, some people came from the leader s house to say, Your daughter is dead. Why trouble the teacher any further? But overhearing what they said, Jesus said to the leader of the synagogue, Do not fear, only believe. He allowed no one to follow him except Peter, James, and John, the brother of James. When they came to the house of the leader of the synagogue, Jesus saw a commotion, people weeping and wailing loudly. When he had entered, he said to them, Why do you make a commotion and weep? The child is not dead but sleeping. And they laughed at him. Then he put them all outside, and took the child s father and mother and those who were with him, and went in where the child was. Jesus took her by the hand and said to her, Talitha cum, which means, Little girl, get up! And immediately the girl got up and began to walk about (she was twelve years of age). 9

10 At this they were overcome with amazement. Jesus strictly ordered them that no one should know this, and told them to give her something to eat. This is the Good News. Praise to you, O Christ. Children s Sermon After the children s sermon, children may go with their teacher to children s church. Or, families may decide to keep children in worship. 12 *Offering Prayer Let us pray. Be known to us, O Christ, in the breaking of the bread, as you were made known to the disciples. Receive these gifts, and the offering of our lives, that we may be your risen body in the world. Amen. *The Great Thanksgiving The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord, our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. It is indeed right, our duty and our joy, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks and praise to you, almighty and merciful God, through our Savior Jesus Christ; who on this day overcame death and the grave, and by his glorious resurrection opened to us the way of everlasting life. And so, with all the choirs of angels, with the church on earth and the hosts of heaven, we praise your name and join their unending hymn: 12

13 *Sanctus *Eucharistic Proclamation and Prayer Holy, Mighty, and merciful God, heaven and earth are full of your glory. 13

14 In great love you sent to us Jesus, your Son, who reached out to heal the sick and suffering, who preached good news to the poor, and who, on the cross, opened his arms to all. In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me. Remembering, therefore, his death, resurrection, and ascension, we await his coming in glory. Pour out upon us the Spirit of your love, O Christ. Reveal to us your presence in the healing power of breaking boundaries, and unite the wills of all who share this heavenly food, the body and blood of Jesus Christ our Savior; to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, be all glory and honor, now and forever. 15 *Lord s Prayer We seek to learn how God is making all things new and so together we pray this ancient prayer of Jesus in a new way. Eternal Spirit; Earth-Maker, Pain-bearer, Life-giver, source of all that is and that shall be, Father and Mother of us all, Loving God, in whom is heaven; the hallowing of your name echoes through the universe! The way of your justice be followed by the peoples of the earth. Your heavenly will be done by all created beings. Your commonwealth of peace and freedom sustain our hope and come on earth. With the bread we need for today, feed us. In the hurts we absorb from one another, forgive us. In times of temptation and test, spare us. From the grip of all that is evil, free us. For you reign in the glory of the power that is love, now and forever. Amen. Invitation to Communion Come, let us eat, for now the feast is spread. Healing Prayer On the first Sunday of the month, during the distribution of Holy Communion, you have the option to come to the font for individual prayers for healing. After receiving the bread and wine, simply approach one of the prayer ministers near the font. You may share your prayer concern for yourself, someone else, or a particular 15

16 situation. You may also request a time of silent prayer. The minister will pray with you, and then you may return to your seat. Prayer requests will remain confidential, with the exception of informing the pastoral staff regarding issues of safety. Distribution All are welcome at the table. After you have received the bread, you may dip it into one of the cups: the dark liquid is wine, the light liquid is grape juice. Or, you may eat the bread and then drink from the last cup which is a common cup of wine. A gluten free wafer is also available. Those who do not yet commune may come forward for a blessing. Amen. *Prayer Let us pray. Jesus Christ, host of this meal, you have given us not only this bread and cup, but your very self, that we may feast on your great love. Filled again by these signs of your grace, may we hunger for your reign of justice, may we thirst for your way of 16

19 Join the song of praise and protest, all the nations of the earth: God who loves the poor and humble sings of dignity and worth. Those the world has long re-jected take at last their rightful place, sharing in the song of Mary, filled with unexpected grace! God has rocked the earth s foundations, turned its values upside-down: strength is overcome by weakness and the humble wear the crown. Now the pow r of God in action under-mines the nation s pride, lifts the poor and feeds the hungry, pushing rich and proud aside. Join the song of praise and protest as the voiceless find a voice, as the pow rless rise triumphant and the broken hearts rejoice. Now the God of all cre-ation rights the long-accepted wrongs; let the voices of the nations swell the liberation song. *Dismissal Go in peace. The Spirit sends us into holy conversation.
