2 The Grapevine "I come with joy to meet my Lord, forgiven, loved and free, in awe and wonder to recall his life laid down for me, his life laid down for me. As Christ breaks bread and bids us share, each proud division ends. The love that made us makes us one, and strangers now are friends, and strangers now are friends." (Brian Wren, 1968) Dear Friends, In the Fall, "Back to School" time may bring up feelings of joy and excitement, as well as fear and uncertainty for children and their parents. For church leaders and pastors, we too might feel joy and excitement, and/or fear and uncertainty as we start another church year and prepare for our annual Church Conference (Oct. 4) with the District Superintendent. We at Oxford United Methodist Church celebrate our highlights: our happy children in Sunday School, Children's Church, and Vacation Bible School, our faithful bell choir who plays beautiful music on Bells and Brunch Sundays, our special Christmas Eve and Easter Sunday services (along with weekly Sunday services), our Community Meal every Wednesday night, and many small groups and seasonal activities too. We at OUMC also face challenges: reaching new people and inviting them to worship and small group activities, maintaining our church building and finances, increasing our worship attendance and volunteer participation, and more. Church Conference is a time to celebrate ministry and also look closely at our church's goals and direction for the next year and into the future. May God's Spirit always move us in God's direction for our church's growth and outreach in our community. Please pray for our church and leaders as we listen to Christ's direction for our church, and actively invite new people to join God's Church in worship and missions and ministry to our community and the world. May we always "come with joy" to worship and serve our Lord, Jesus Christ! Grace and Peace, Pastor Jennifer Because there is one bread (Jesus), we who are many are one body, for we all partake of the one bread." 1 Corinthians 10:17 United Methodist Church Mission Statement: To make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. Church Conference October 4th at 8pm [SPPRC - 7:15pm meeting with the District Superintendent] A time for church leaders and members to review our missions and ministries, church goals, pastoral compensation, and highlights and challenges ahead. Everyone is invited to attend. Please note: All committee leaders are requested to submit their 2016 reports to the church office before Monday, September 19th. Questions? 3 September / October 2016 United Methodist Church World Missions UMC Northwest Detroit Flood Recovery Project The largest disaster of 2014 happened in our own backyard. Despite the magnitude of the damage, the flood of August 11, 2014 has received little attention. This flooding event left much of Macomb, Oakland, and Wayne Counties under water. Thirty churches in the Renaissance District experienced flooding in the church building and/or parsonage. More than 130,000 households registered for FEMA assistance from the three affected counties (with 40,000 from Northwest Detroit alone). Since beginning our work in the spring of 2015, the Northwest Detroit Flood Recovery Project (NwDFRP) has done outreach to more than 400 homes. More than 200 homes have received disaster case management services. Through creative partnerships, volunteer coordination, and generous funding from UMCOR we VBS Special Offering: Haiti Hot Lunch Mission This year our Vacation Bible School children and church members made the connection to feed children in Haiti. They donated $ The Haiti Hot Lunch program provides over 22,000 children in EMH (Eglise Methodiste d Haiti) schools with hot, nutritional meals three times per week, that many children otherwise would not receive. Before the program, children would attend school relying only on the breakfast eaten at home or snack foods purchased in the street. This program ensures access to nutritional meals, cooked on-site, to provide energy to learn throughout the day. This project has been very successful in lowering absenteeism, How UMCOR Stretches Your Disaster Dollar By Susan Kim August 18, 2016 Your contribution to the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR)is helping disaster survivors across the nation recover from events that never made the headlines. How does UMCOR stretch your disaster dollar to quietly bring hope to countless people and their families? And what is a low-attention disaster? It often means that there is little financial assistance and volunteer labor for people most in need, said Catherine Earl, a disaster response program manager for UMCOR. It is possible, however, to turn a low-attention disaster into a highly meaningful recovery for survivors through have coordinated the completion of much outs and reconstruction jobs. More than 50 boilers, furnaces, and hot water heaters have been inspected and replaced. Two years has also been an opportunity for United Methodists to respond. With your help we can extend our response. The NwDFRP is funded through December However, at the rate we are working we will run out of funding for direct assistance before we run out of funds for operating expenses. Our fundraising goal, to finish the project strong, is $50,000. These additional funds will help cover the cost of muck out materials, drywall, floor tile and subcontracted services such as plumbing, electrical, asbestos removal, and heating assessments. Your financial donations of which 100% go to direct assistance for flood survivors, will allow us to complete work on the 60+ homes in progress and to begin work on the 20+ homes on the wait list. Please make donation checks to Oxford UMC (memo line: Detroit Flood Recovery) increasing the general health of the students, and raising the average test scores on national exams. The Haiti School Hot Lunch program has also provided summer programs of Bible study, recreation, and community activities for children. The average cost of a single meal for a student is $1, but it can be as much as $2 depending on the area, cost and availability of food. If you would like to donate, please write your check to OUMC with Haiti Hot Lunch - Advance # on the memo line. the dedicated efforts of the church in partnership with UMCOR, Earl said. Across the nation, conference disaster responders help stretch recovery dollars by partnering with other organizations. Volunteers also help UMCOR reach more for less money. Every dollar can be stretched because of the help of volunteers who are willing to go where there is little or no media attention, said Earl. Recovery in these communities depends on volunteers showing up. All disaster survivors deserve your help and prayers. Please make your check to OUMC with UMCOR U.S. Disaster Response, Advance # in the memo line. Our September back-to-school classic selection chronicles the joys and sorrows of the four March sisters as they grow into young ladies in nineteenth-century New England. Grown-up Meg, tomboyish Jo, timid Beth, and precocious Amy, the four March sisters couldn't be more different. But with their father away at war, and their mother working to support the family, they have to rely on one another.
