Some of our Clergy friends who participated in the rotating pulpit last year during lent are participating again. This year Karyn gets to be the one who rotates to the other churches while Larry stays here and provides worship leadership. This is going to be a fun 4 weeks. Who is Preaching When? 2 SNOWFLAKES Dr. Larry Snow I want to express my thanks to all those who worked so hard to make Easter so special. The music was great, the food was wonderful, there was real energy in the air. Thanks. Now we re getting ready for Creationtide. Creationtide is a new liturgical season dedicated to celebrating God s good creation and our place in it. The theme this year is Creation Justice. Karyn preached the first sermon in the series last Sunday. For the next two weeks she will be preaching at other churches while their pastors preach here. We look forward to hearing from Mary Sue Evers, Pastor from Cedar Hills United Church of Christ) and Brett Strobel, Pastor at Christ United Methodist Church. The last sermon in the series is mine. I think this is going to be lots of fun. In the last half of May we ll be returning to Towards a Community of Grace a service dedicated to addressing issues head on in the hope that we can become more a community of welcome and grace. In May we intend to talk about the Worship Wars, White Privilege and politics. Amidst all that we ll hear a report from the trio that went on the mission trip to Memphis. Karyn and I think we re on to something. We ve started recruiting for short term committees. One such committee helped plan our Chocolat for Lent series and another helped with Creationtide. These committees have a very clear assignment and no long term commitment. It seems to us that such committees are the wave of the future and are lots of fun. See you in church, Larry 2

3 Musings Rev. Karyn Dix You won t be seeing much of me for a little while. May is a month on the move for me. I am excited that I am the one rotating to the other churches in our Creationtide sermon series. I am looking forward to seeing how our friends churches worship. This is a fun way to connect with others in our Christian community. I will miss worshiping with you on Sundays, but I am sure it will be fun. May is also the month that I head to Texas for the next session of Face to Face class time. The two classes this trip are Theological Perspectives of Moral Injury and Cosmopolitan Pastor. The reading for these two classes are intense but amazing. They will be informing on how I do ministry in the future as well as contributing to my final Doctoral project. The Lily Grant is away and I have received notification that they received it. Now I wait until September to hear if we got it or not. Besides the time I am in Texas for my Doctoral Classes I will be in the church office during the week. So even though you might not see me on Sundays I am still here, working and available if you need me. I look forward to being back in worship with you Memorial Day weekend. 3

4 Update on the Search for a Director of Music Ministries The Search Committee selected to recruit a Director of the Music Ministries (DOMM) has been hard at work. They have looked at resumes, conducted interviews and narrowed their choices. This week, the top candidate met with all of our music groups and even doing some conducting. We hope to have a candidate to present to the Board by the time school is out. Pray Together Every Tuesday Night there are people who gather together to pray for our church, our community, and our world. If you cannot come on Tuesday night we encourage you to stop whatever you are doing at 6:30 on Tuesday Nights and pray. Prayer is an important part of our lives as Christians and as a church community. Come join us in prayer. The Church Leaves The Building June 18 th Every year we take a Sunday to step outside of our building and worship together through service to our community. This year we will again be headed to Chehalem Elementary School. The staff and family are looking forward to the work we will be doing together. This year we are working on the possibility of sharing our meal together at Chehalem instead of at the church. Watch for more details as we get closer to June 18 th. 4

5 VBS is July REGISTRATION IS NOW LIVE ON THE WEBSITE! WE NEED SHEPHERDS!!!! This is a great wat to build relationships with the children in the church and the surrounding community. Hightimers Hightimers will be gathering to eat at Yen's Chinese Restaurant, SW Main St, Tigard, OR 97223, on Sunday, May 7, at 1:00. Please let Bobby Prowell know by May 5 if you can join us. Quilts for Kids meets monthly on the second Thursday. May 11th s meeting will be a salad potluck at Kay Merrill s house beginning at 11:30 am. There will not be a Quilts for Kids meeting in June, July, and August. For more information, contact Kay Merrill. Needlers meet every Wednesday, from 1 3 pm in the Fellowship Hall. Anyone is welcome. Reiki 1 will be held May 5 & 6 from 9:30 to 5:30 each day. There is still room to join us. 6 Background Checks and Child Protection Policy First, a big thankyou to each one of you who has already updated filled out your biannual background check form. If you received an about this form and have yet to fill it out please do so ASAP. Running these every two years is part of our child protection policy. Also, we need to let you know that we are currently in the process of reviewing and revising our child protection policy. This comes out of the day long training Karyn went to about how to keep our children safe from Sexual Abuse. Our children are our responsibility and we need to do everything we can to keep them safe while we raise them up within our faith community. We encourage each one of you to be part of this review process. Worship Planning Opportunities There are two upcoming sermon series that need some people to plan what worship for the series will look like. Worship Planning takes only a couple of meetings and only a few Sundays. Please let Larry or Karyn know if you would like to help plan for either of the sermon series listed below and what day/time works best for you to meet. Towards A Community of Grace May & June The Beatitudes July & August 6

7 This month our children are going to be learning about the scriptures which talk about Jesus as The Good Shepherd as well as The Way The Truth and The Light! They will explore what it means to be a disciple and follow Jesus way. May 7 the High School Group is cooking at the Tigard Shelter. Karyn is out of town for her Doctoral Work May 14 (Mother s Day) and May 21st. May 28th is Memorial Day weekend and we will have a movie night. 7

It is always up-to-date with member information received in the office. If you need help accessing it, please contact the office Krista is always willing to help! We have been working hard on our transition to Constant Contact, a web-based program that will streamline our accessibility to send mass s and announcements as well as our newsletter link to the website. 12 Monthly News from: ACCOMPLISHENTS We had a meeting with the City of Beaverton Mayor's office this past week to discuss how to best approach our time with the City Council on May 2nd. - Our June 10th Fund Raiser and Awareness event is moving forward. - Day Center Update: Habitat for Humanity has informed us about a small house we may be able to temporarily use for a Day Center. The house will be completed later this year, but residents are not likely to be able to move in for a year or so from completion. While it is smaller than desired, it is a great temporary solution if we are not able to find a more suitable, long term location for our day center as we get started. Our Host Recruiting team continues to make progress with a number of churches to become Host congregations; at least two have verbally indicated a desire to become hosts. We will add their names to the support list below when they formally commit to support Family Promise of Beaverton. COMMUNITY NEWS Did you know...? - Most Family Promise affiliates across the USA do not get support from their local governments; yet the City of Beaverton very much wants to support Family Promise of Beaverton. Aren't we lucky to be part of a community who wants to help those in need!! - A single parent and her four children were not able to spend the night at a Beaverton severe weather shelter this past winter because the shelter only allowed adults. The nearest family shelter is in Forest Grove. - In the Fall of 2016, there were 47 families on the waiting list for a permanent family shelter. 11 of those families were considered high risk (sleeping outside or in a car). The wait list is 6 weeks long. PLANS - We have a time slot at the May 2rd Beaverton City Council meeting. We plan to update them on our progress and request a plan for formal support from the city which may include an official a letter of support, financial support and/or support with our June 10 "Drive In-Sleep Out" event. Show your support for Family Promise of Beaverton by coming to the City Council Meeting and wear blue! Beaverton City Council Meeting, Tuesday May 2nd, 6:30pm - Save the date for our: "Drive In-Sleep Out" Family Promise of Beaverton Fund Raiser and Awareness event planned for June 10 & 11th in Downtown Beaverton (5pm Saturday - 10am Sunday June 11th). Dinner, Music, a Movie and Breakfast will be donated/ provided. Participants will get pledges for sleeping in their cars. We are also working with local businesses to help sponsor the event and with the Beaverton Area High School Art Students to design an event logo. Want to help out? 13 REST STOP NEEDS On average, our building hosts police officers daily. We also have come across training sessions inside our building overnight as well. We are so blessed to have this space and ministry available and the officers are always appreciative of our space. Monthly Newsletter Article from the Insurance Board Partners in Protection There are reasons why we do not post last names, hospital/rehab facilities, room numbers, or phone numbers. Q: Some churches post prayer lists on their website that describe the prayer needs of members. Needs may include medical diagnoses, relational or financial problems. Does posting this information on a church website constitute invasion of privacy? A: Possibly. A church can reduce if not eliminate this risk by obtaining consent from people before putting their names on a list. This can be done either by contacting persons directly and obtaining their written consent to having their name (and need) posted on the website prayer list or by instructing members to include this written consent at the time the prayer request is submitted if they desire for it to be shared publicly online. Some churches seek to avoid the inconvenience of obtaining the consent of every person on a prayer list by creating a no prayer list and notifying the congregation periodically (i.e., in church bulletins or newsletters) that persons who do not want the congregation to pray for them should contact the church office and have their names placed on the no prayer list. This implied consent is not as effective as the express consent obtained by contacting each person directly, and it is far from clear whether it would be deemed effective by a court. 13
