1 NOVEMBER 2014 Prayer and Preparation 8:30-9:00 AM Bible Study Hour 9:00-10:00 AM Sunday Worship 10:00-11:15 AM November 2: Communion Sunday Elk Grove Food Bank Collection Deacon Meeting Angeja Home Emeritus November 10: Session Meeting November 14: 4F s Luncheon The Peace Press "Following Jesus together, Building Faith" ENJOYING LIVES FILLED WITH THANKSGIVING As we enter November, we draw near to Thanksgiving, and as believers we are reminded of how important it is that we be people of thanksgiving each and every day. We have been created in the image of God in order to be people of worship, to be people who give thanks for all of life, for all the gifts God brings us. In Psalm 30:11-12 (this and following texts are all from NIV), David praises God, saying, You turned my wailing into dancing; you removed my sackcloth and clothed me with joy, that my heart may sing your praises and not be silent. LORD my God, I will give you thanks forever. In 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18, Paul invites us to, "Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God s will for you in Christ Jesus." God's will for us is to give thanks to Him, to be thankful people. God wants our lives to be transformed by thankfulness and gratitude to Him. Will we allow Him to do so? Will we embrace His purpose and plan for our lives, for us to be people who are always thankful to Him? At the end of this month, we will begin the holy season of Advent. One theme of Advent is that of joy and of giving thanks. In Luke 1:47, Mary, the mother of Jesus, praises God, saying, "My soul glorifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior." In Luke 1:68, Zechariah, the father of John the Baptist, praises God, saying, "Praise be to the Lord, the God of Israel, because He has come and has redeemed His people." Mary and Zechariah both praise God for sending us Jesus to save us and to reconcile us to God. Our relationships with Jesus then are to be founded on praise and thanksgiving. In this season of Thanksgiving and as we begin Advent, let us recommit ourselves to being people who give praise and thanksgiving to God. Jesus loves you and I do too! God bless you! 3 THE SACRAMENT OF THE LORD'S SUPPER For 2014, the Session has approved normally celebrating the Sacrament of the Lord's Supper on the first Sunday of each month. During November we will celebrate this Sacrament on Sunday, November 2 nd. Please pray and prepare yourselves to receive and to celebrate this Sacrament together. FOOD BANK SUNDAYS TO BE ON COMMUNION SUNDAY The Session has approved designating Communion Sundays as Food Bank Sundays. We encourage you to bring food to donate and to make cash donations as well. We do not keep a discretionary fund to help those in need and instead refer all requests for assistance directly to the Food Bank. Please give generously to bless those in need in our community. BECOMING PART OF THE FAMILY We are always blessed when God leads someone "new" to become a part of our church family. We affirm that it is God who leads us and calls us to join the church, to be a part of His body and family here at Peace. Come and learn more about how God wants to bless you to be a blessing at Peace. Contact Pastor Brian for more details. SPECIAL TIMES OF PRAYER Everyone is invited to join Pastor Brian and Pastor Jerry each Sunday as we meet at 8:30 AM in the sanctuary to pray: to pray for the Sunday service and to pray for all of those involved in serving that day; to pray for God's Spirit to be poured out in our midst; to pray that we will become the church family God wants and wills us to be. The Deacons also invite you to join them in weekly prayer for our church and for our church leaders each Saturday at 8:30 AM in your homes (or wherever else you may be). Please join with your church family in setting aside time weekly to pray. COMMUNION UPDATES The Session has been discussing some ways to make our celebration of the Lord's Table more meaningful. The Session is encouraging families to take the Sacrament together and for parents to share about the Sacrament with their children before, during and after we celebrate communion. We will be trying some new things to tweak the flow of the service as we prepare to celebrate the Sacrament of the Lord's Supper, beginning this Sunday. We are moving the second praise song from the beginning of the service to right after the sermon. We are also moving the Apostle's Creed to the beginning of the Sacrament time. The intent of moving these two elements is to provide our children enough time to complete their classes and then to join their families in the sanctuary before we celebrate the Sacrament together. We have told the teachers to expect an Elder to come and prepare them to rejoin us in the sanctuary between 11:00-11:05 a.m. When the children come back in, we will encourage them to sit with their families and then for families to celebrate and to take the Sacrament together. Youth will be available to help with the younger children as needed. We pray that these changes will be a blessing to you and your family and to our church family as we celebrate together what Jesus has done for us. Page 3 of 17

4 BECOMING A CONTAGIOUS CHRISTIAN STUDY ON FRIDAY NIGHTS We will continue our adult study, Becoming a Contagious Christian, during November, a study from Bill Hybels. This study is intended to equip us for relational evangelism, that is, to be contagious with the faith and the hope we have in Jesus. Come and be blessed as we reflect on the good news of our faith. November 7 Session 4, Telling Your Story November 14 Session 5 Communicating God s Message November 21 Session 6 Helping Your Friends Cross the Line of Faith November 28 NO FFN (Thanksgiving Holiday) WOMEN OF PEACE In November, we continue our study on Friday mornings at 10:00 a.m., One Thousand Gifts: A Dare to Live Fully Right Where You Are. In this five-session, videobased study, we are encouraged to take on the life-changing discipline of journaling God s gifts to really look at life and find the good in it. It s only in this expressing of gratitude for the life we already have, that we discover the life we ve always wanted a life we can take, give thanks for, and break for others. And only then can we come to feel and know the impossible right down in our bones: we are wildly loved by God. Contact Rachel Spangler or Cindy Gansereit for more information. IRON MAN NEWS As Iron Men, we are beginning a new study, where we will explore what it means to be courageous men, who seek to live with honor at home, at church and at work. We began by watching the Courageous movie on Saturday, August 23. In the following weeks, we will have a Bible Study based on the themes of living for God with courage and with honor. This study will challenge us to affirm Joshua 24:15: "Choose today who you will serve, but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord." Saturday, November 1 Session Two Courageous Priorities Joshua 7:1-26, Matthew 6:20-21 Saturday, November 8 Session Three Courageous Legacy Saturday, November 15 Joshua 23:1-16 Session Three Courageous Legacy Joshua 23:1-16 Saturday, November 22 Session Four Courageous Faith Joshua 24:1-18 Saturday, November 29 Session Four Courageous Faith Joshua 24:1-18 Saturday December 6 Breakfast, Prayer and Planning FRIENDS IN FAITH, FELLOWSHIP, FUN & SERVICE This month we will meet on FRIDAY, November 14th, at 11:30 a.m. at The Old Spaghetti Factory, Call Wanda Juneau at or the Church Office at Hope to see you there! 10 NOVEMBER PRESCHOOL NOTES We have had a wonderful, busy start to our preschool year. Our enrollment is on the rise, we have started getting calls, and giving tours to prospective new families. All three of our classes are doing great! With Ms. Janet leaving and Ms. Kim taking over as director; Ms. Liza has taken on the Lead Teacher role in both the T-Th class and the M-W-F class. We currently have Ms. Val substituting while we search for a new, fabulous teacher to add to our team. October was a busy month! We had our Fall pictures taken, took a field trip to Keema s Pumpkin Farm, and had a successful Restaurant Fundraiser Night at Lamppost Pizza. We ended the month with a Harvest Party in our classrooms. November is looking to bring even more excitement than we saw in October. We will kick the month off by introducing Lunch Bunch an extended care program which gives children an extra hour at preschool. During this time, we will have lunch (brought from home), engage in more conversations, and have free choice play inside or out, depending on the weather. November 4 th is voting day, the Jr. K classroom is used during this process, so our Jr. K class and our Tuesday & Thursday classes will share the main preschool building. On November 12 th the Cosumnes Fire Department will be coming to our preschool to talk to our children about fire safety! November 20 th will be our Restaurant Fundraiser Night at Chevy s! Come help our Peace Preschool. Flyers will be posted at church and ed the week before. All preschool classes will be having a Thanksgiving party the last week before we go on our Thanksgiving Break. 11 ARE YOU UP FOR A CHALLENGE? Pastor Brian is challenging you and the entire church to read through the Bible this upcoming year. A reading schedule will be provided to guide you in this. The goals of this challenge are: - to encourage each of us to read more Scripture, including at home with our families; - to help us develop a greater sense of the scope of Scripture and to help us develop a Biblical world view; - to learn more about God and to enjoy the new life He offers us more fully. Be challenged and be blessed as we read through the Bible together next year! Page 11 of 17

12 INCOME UPDATE These figures include the finance report information through September, Income: Expense: General Offering $ 65, Property $ 35, Fundraising $ 10, Office $ 5, Space Use $ 35, Personnel Expense $ 15, Other $ 1.31 Programs; Total $111, Celebration $ Christian Ed $ Worship $ Payroll Expenses $ 53, Total $110, Net Ordinary Income $ 1, LOAN UPDATES Our current loan amounts are: Synod Muzzy Loan: $16, as of with a monthly payment of $1, plus an additional $1, applied to the principle. At the beginning of 2012, our loan amount was $91, Our current heater loan amount is $2, with a monthly payment of $200. You may give extra amounts to help us pay off our loans more quickly by designating loan reduction on your check. We are committed to paying off these loans as soon as we can. UPDATE ON FINANCIAL GIVING Our church depends on the faithful Christian stewardship of each of our members in order to be who God is calling us to be. The Session seeks to prayerfully discern each year what we need our members to give in order to meet this call from God, which we call general offering. Through October 26th, our general offering is $72, as compared to our budgeted amount of $84,366.00, which is a $11, shortfall. Thus far, we have been able to keep our expenses down, but, we will need to increase our giving the rest of the year to meet the ongoing needs of the church. Increased giving will allow us to take care of the ongoing expenses of running a church, handle any needed repairs and maintain a working cash flow. God has a plan to use each of us to help take care of this shortfall. For some, it will involve giving more each month. For others, it will involve beginning to give regularly. For others, it will involve giving special gifts beyond their normal giving. For each of us, it will involve praying for our faithful giving as a church family and that God will lead us in boldly meeting this financial gap together. Please pray over God is calling you to increase your giving in gratitude to what God has done for you. Please continue to give self-sacrificially to God, as He has done for us in Jesus. 13 FUNDRAISING OPPORTUNITIES Did you know that there are several ways you can help Peace raise funds without spending any additional money yourself? Recycle: The Joy Singers collect recyclable beverage containers to help offset the costs of piano tuning and annual fees for music license for the use of songs that we sing and play. We collect beverage containers only; the container must have the CA redemption symbol on it to be eligible. The symbol is generally on the side of the container: CA CRV is what to look for. Please remove the caps from all bottles, because the caps break the machine. Eligible examples are aluminum soda cans; beer cans; plastic water bottles; some hard liquor bottles; & bottles that are not 100% juice or milk, like ice tea and Snapple. Not eligible are milk cartons; many 100% juices that do not have the CA symbol on them; & wine bottles. You can either bring your bottles and cans to church, or bring them to the recycling center yourself and turn in the money to the church marked music recycling. The closest center to the church is behind Bel-Air. This location is closed Sun and Mon. After you turn in your items, the attendant give you a slip and then proceed to a Bel-Air cashier where they will give you cash. If you prefer for us to pick up your items, please contact Liz Irons at: The Joy singers thank you. escrip: We are enrolled in the escrip program, where participating business partners contribute a percentage of your grocery loyalty card and credit card purchases to the organization of your choice. For example, you can register your Safeway Club card with escrip, and they will automatically donate a percentage of your grocery purchases to our church. You can also register a credit card so that any purchases you make with that card at Macy s or any other participating business will trigger contributions to Peace. All you need to do is go to sign up to support our church, and then enter any club card and/or credit card numbers that you want to use. It costs you nothing; the merchants make the contributions. The web site lists all the businesses that participate in the program. If you have any questions or would like help signing up, contact Cindy Martin. ewaste: Not sure what to do with all those old cell phones, computers, televisions, or other electronics? All you have to do is go to and fill in your information. Be sure to designate our church as the organization you want to support. Your old items will be picked up for free and the proceeds will be sent to us. See the flyer posted in the fellowship hall for more info or contact Cindy Martin. ELK GROVE FOOD BANK We encourage each family to pray over their special giving to the Food Bank, as the Food Bank continues to process and help more and more families and people each year. The church does not provide or maintain a discretionary fund to help those in need who come by the church in person, so we refer people directly to the Food Bank. Also our monthly food collection for the Elk Grove Food Closet will be on Sunday, November 2 nd and on the first Sunday of each month. Please contact the Elders if you have any questions about this special commitment we are making as a church family. Page 13 of 17
