1 June 2017 Dear AnglicareSA members, Last month we opened the new Arches building and the Bail Accommodation and Support Program (BASP) at Port Adelaide. The Arches and BASP aims to prevent alleged offenders entering custody unnecessarily and supporting them to develop and maintain social, employment and training links. The new building provides short-term accommodation for alleged offenders who are suitable for bail, but without an appropriate place to live would have to be incarcerated. Participants are accommodated in one of 30 self-contained accommodation units and have access to a range of support services, all of which are designed to help them get their lives back on track. When a participant is referred to The Arches, AnglicareSA staff will work with them to develop a transition plan, aimed at helping the person to find suitable, long-term accommodation. We will link them to the services they need such as health care, Centrelink and counselling, and remind them of their bail conditions and court dates. Program participants will also have access to a range of AnglicareSA and partner agency services in the areas of employment and training, housing, financial matters, family and relationships and health and wellbeing. The Arches will be staffed 24/7 and there will be close communication between AnglicareSA, the Department of Correctional Services, SA Police and the Courts to ensure the appropriate management of participants. There will also be house rules in place and program participants will be closely managed by appropriately experienced staff to help provide a safe environment for the community and clients. 2 Family Matters Strong communities. Strong culture. Stronger children The Family Matters Campaign s Week of Action was held May. The national campaign aims to draw attention to the disproportionate representation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children in child protection. During the week we launched the campaign in Rundle Mall (pictured below: Karl Telfer and Jackie Huggins). We want to ensure Aboriginal children grow up safe and cared for in family, community and culture. It s now been 20 years since the Bringing Them Home report into the Stolen Generations was released and Australia was shocked to learn that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children represented one in every five children living in out-of-home care. Today, two decades on, they are one in every three. The causes of this over representation are complex, and the consequences of child removal are profound. The majority of the funding continues to go into the out-of-home care system instead of towards prevention and early intervention. The need for urgent action is clear. Last November Family Matters released its inaugural report. You can download the report here. Supporting your NDIS choices campaign Last month we launched our marketing campaign for AnglicareSA's NDIS services. The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) has brought changes to the way disability services in Australia are funded, giving customers greater choice about how they receive care and support. The NDIS started rolling out for children's services in South Australia in 2013, and in July this year adults aged between 18 and 64 years of age will begin to enter the scheme based on where they live. The first rollout area will include the City of Playford, the City of Salisbury, the City of Gawler and the City of Port Adelaide Enfield (east). 2

3 The campaign features three real AnglicareSA clients George, Keesha and Caroline. It focuses on the goals and needs of the customers, and how AnglicareSA can help them reach these goals through our range of disability and mental health services. You might see the campaign on Facebook, in your letterbox, on bus shelters in the northern suburbs, shopping centre information stalls, and posters and flyers around AnglicareSA sites. If you or someone you know has any questions about the NDIS or AnglicareSA's Disability and Mental Health services, call our NDIS Customer Service Team on or AnglicareSA partners with Port Adelaide for Indigenous Round On Thursday 1 June AnglicareSA were privileged to partner with Port Adelaide Football Club as the club s official Charity Partner for their Indigenous Round match against Hawthorn. The AnglicareSA branded marquee in front of Adelaide Oval was manned by staff and volunteers who braved the freezing temperatures and raised funds by selling merchandise, raffle tickets and collecting gold coin donations from game attendees. Having the marquee outside Adelaide Oval also gave us a good opportunity to promote the 3

4 AnglicareSA brand and some of the work AnglicareSA does in the community to the AFL supporters. Children attending the game were also treated to free face painting of Aboriginal body art. On the same night, we also partnered with St Martin s Anglican Church Campbelltown and St Peter s Cathedral and held a fundraising BBQ before the game outside the Cathedral. Given the cold weather conditions, we were happy with the funds raised. The fundraising team would like to thank all staff and volunteers who volunteered their time to make the evening a successful one. Blanket Adelaide with Love This is the title of a local appeal for blankets, warm winter gear and new underwear and socks organised by Simon Jackson, Minister at St Bartholomew s Norwood part of the Grace Anglican Network. For the second year running an appeal day has been held following some letterboxing in local homes and businesses in the Norwood area; the appeal day was held on Saturday 27 May from 9am 2pm. By late morning there was a steady stream of donors visiting the Donation Station and a rather large amount of donated goods resulted, including some much needed new items which had been specially purchased by donors. These will be given away through our Emergency Assistance outlets across Adelaide. Thanks to the good people of St Bart s for this great initiative, just in time for the beginning of the winter season! Anglican Ministries in Playford seeking a shared vision Over 30 people attended the Anglican Ministries in Playford Mission and Vision Session held on Saturday 13 May at Holy Cross Church Elizabeth. Participants included representatives of the two English Speaking congregations at St Catherine's Elizabeth Downs and Holy Cross Elizabeth together with members of the Sudanese (Dinka) Speaking Congregation meeting at Holy Cross. 4

5 AnglicareSA was represented by Kate McGarry Senior Manager Community Services who presented on recent and anticipated changes and challenges in the Playford Community and how AnglicareSA is currently engaged and responding through services in the area. Archdeacon Lyn McRostie also presented some recently released 2016 Census Data for the City of Playford together with data from other sources including the Playford Council and its vision for the community. St Columba College, a joint Anglican and Roman Catholic Junior and Senior School, was represented by Reverend Jo Smith who is also engaging in pioneer ministry in the Elizabeth area. Participants identified a range of things which could be achieved together as the Anglican Ministries in Playford to be more fully engaged and visible with each other and the wider community. Peter Burke, AnglicareSA Director of Mission and Anglican Community Engagement, facilitated the gathering and a report will be prepared and presented with a view to future meetings of the Anglican Ministries in Playford to engage in shared mission activities. 6 Visitor from Anglicare PNG As part of a national tour hosted by the Anglican Board of Mission, we had a one day visit to AnglicareSA from Roxanne Roberts Senior Manager Anglicare PNG together with Sarah Gover ABM Education Officer. The visit included AnglicareSA presentations on our three operational service areas at the Western Hub, some time with Peter Sandeman and a visit to The Magdalene Centre Whitmore Square, Carrington and Moore Streets. Pictured: Roxanne Roberts (Anglicare PNG), Peter Burke, Sarah Gover (Anglican Board of Mission) and Rafael Leal (Coordinator Emergency Assistance The Magdalene Centre) Sing Joyfully for Children with Autism The Adelaide Benefit Concert Choir, an ecumenical choir enjoying good music and fundraising for good causes, held its most recent concert at St Peter s Cathedral on Sunday 28 May in aid of our Autism Specific Early Learning and Child Care Centre (ASELCC). The 25 voice choir were joined by some young emerging musicians and others to sing and play and lead some good old fashioned community hymn singing as well. During the interval members of the ASELCC team sold some merchandise and raffle tickets to patrons who also enjoyed an afternoon tea of savoury and sweet treats, juice and sherry. Bridget Knowles, Manager Autism Services AnglicareSA spoke about the program. Over $800 was raised at the door and more through interval sales. 6
