9349 E. 65 th Street, Raytown, Missouri Phone: St. Matthew s Staff Rev. Orin Cummings Rector Sherry Minzey Admin. Assistant Ron Stockton Music Director Jim Minzey Sexton Officers Patti McGill Senior Warden Junior Warden David Macey Treasurer Secretary Dave Chullino George Miller Clerk of the Works Service Times 8:00 a.m 11:00 a.m. Sunday Service Rite II Dear Saints, Greetings in the name of our crucified, risen and ascended Lord and coming Savior Jesus Christ! At this time of the year, it is customary to acknowledge and celebrate with gratitude graduates among us. If you are a 2018 graduate, I personally extend heartiest congratulations to you on behalf of the St Matthew s Parish and pray God s blessings upon you as you conclude one chapter and begin another in your life. Also, this is a good time to convey thanks to Sunday School teachers for faithfully instructing and mentoring the faith to the children in this parish. Teachers, Judy Taylor and Zella Forsythe, are gems of faith and religious fervor. I pray that their enthusiasm for sharing the gospel and reigniting faith in Jesus Christ will spread among us, beyond our sanctuary walls and into the community. Thank you, parents and guardians, for bringing children to worship and Sunday School. Your role is very important to the success of evangelism in this parish. We need more young adults and parents like Christina and Jason, Tish and Carlos, who see the need for children in society to be grounded in the Word of God, especially at such a time as this. We need to be creative and think outside the box as to how we might reach more children with the Word of God. Toward that end, I am also hopeful that we will grow VBS this year. We should make every effort to have at least 25 children, double the number we had in We can with everyone pitching in. You might not be a teacher, but you can commit to make a passionate request for children in the community and those you know to attend. Bring children to VBS. Contribute your time as teaching assistant or help with meal and snacks preparation or contribute in kind or cash to the program. Pray every day for VBS and participate in upcoming planning meetings and production setup. Hope to see you then! Continued on page 2
Continued from page 1 All who gathered to celebrate the birthday of the church on Sunday, May 20 at St Matthew s including Blue Ridge Trinity Lutheran Church were blessed by the richness of worship and had an enjoyable time in fellowship that followed. Thank you, Zella Forsythe and Pat Whitmore and your willing band of happy helpers for the joyous celebration of Pentecost that reminded us of the origin and significance of the event. Finally, God s blessings for a great Memorial Day weekend! Do remember that church meets throughout the year. Some of us might go on vacation, but the church does not. I ll be here to welcome you in Jesus name each Sunday. Happy 4 th of July In Christ s service, Fr Orin L-R Robyn Williams, Darrel & Beth Cook, Service & Community Outreach REAP-POSTAL WORKERS FOOD DRIVE On Saturday, May 12, 2018, Darryl & Beth Cook, Robyn Williams, and worked 2:00 pm until about 5:30 pm to help unload and sort food items collected by the Postal workers in Raytown. The Post Office weighs the food, and then volunteer drivers deliver it to REAP where it is unloaded, sorted, and stacked on shelves. It was reported about 9,392 pounds of food was collected. If each household in Raytown would just donate one can of food, the shelves at REAP would be filled to overflowing. St. Matthew s Parish is so appreciated by REAP because of our monthly food contributions!

Dear Parish Family, RAYTOWN SUMMER LUNCH MINISTRY-2018 St. Matthew s has an opportunity to participate in one of the largest multi-church outreach efforts occurring in our region. Raytown Christian Church hosts the Raytown Summer Lunch Ministry. When school ends for the summer, this program steps up and prepares a healthy sack lunch for children who are on the free or reduced lunch program. Last year it served nearly 550 children a day for 25 days, totaling about 16,000 lunches, delivered to an area where they live. How YOU Can Help? If you are available to volunteer anytime this summer from July 9 th to August 10 th, Monday through Friday for about an hour, call Raytown Christian Church for more information or contact at lgerding@swbell.net. Meet on Wednesday June 27 th from 9:00am to 12:00pm to repackage food at Raytown Christian Church. This is mostly sitting at tables and sorting food items. Volunteer to help put lunches together either 1 day a week or just 1 day during the month of July and August. Mornings are from 9:30 to 11:15 and deliveries go from 11:30 to about 1: Deliver flyers 2. Repackage bulk food 3. Make sandwiches & pack lunches 4. Drive a delivery vehicle 5. Ride along to make deliveries 6. Support financially Thanks to everyone in the Parish that donated Zip Lock bags, napkins or lunch sacks. We donated: 1,760 napkins, 1,680 Zip Lock, and 650 lunch sacks. This more than doubled from last year! Thank you for your support., Service & Outreach
COMMUNITY BAND THANK YOU CONCERT On Sunday, May 20, 2018 at 3:00pm, the Raytown Symphonic Community Band performed a special Thank You concert for St. Matthew s parish. This was to show their appreciation to St. Matthew s for allowing them to use the fellowship hall in which to hold their practices during the past year. Due partially to the fact that Mr. Bob Cochran is their new Director, the concert did not get put on the church calendar and wasn t announced. Never the less, the show must go on and the Band performed wonderfully to an audience of about 25 people. The band members are very appreciative, and St. Matthew s is happy to provide the space for them to practice and ultimately benefit the Raytown community. Service & Outreach Commission Bob Cochran-Director Raytown Community Symphonic Band
The Flying Solo group met on Saturday, April 21st for the Flights of Fancy Kite Festival at Longview Community College, followed by dinner at Spin Pizza. The Kite Festival included professional mega kites, including a JUMBO horse, salamander, octopus, tiger, stingray, fish and much more. Hundreds of individuals were also flying their own kites. Participants included Mary Cease, Charles Cease, Zella Forsythe, Judy Taylor, and Mike Gerding. The group met again on Saturday, May 19 th, when we checked out the brand-new B&B Theater in Lee s Summit and watched the comedy Book Club, starring Candice Bergen, Diane Keaton, Mary Steenburgen and Jane Fonda. Everyone really enjoyed this hilarious movie. We met afterward for dinner at Long-Bell Restaurant. May participants included Beth Cook, Darrell Cook, Judy Taylor, Zella Forsythe, Bill Noone and Morrie Carlson. Please join us for our next event in June that has come together compliments of Morrie Carlson. Morrie, who works for the Royals, has arranged for us to tour Royals Stadium on Saturday, June 23 rd at 2:00. Morrie has arranged for us to take The All-Star Tour, which is a $30.00 value, but free for us. The tour includes Royals Hall of Fame, Royals Dugout, Interview Room, Press Box, Outfield Plaza, Triple Crown Suite, Dugout Suite, Craft & Draft, and the Party Deck. We have a very limited number of slots, so please sign up in advance because we may not be able to accommodate drop ins. Please sign up at the next coffee hour, where you ll find a sign-up sheet. Please remember that everyone is welcome at Flying Solo events. It s for anyone who wants to go out on a (usually) Saturday night with a group of friends. We usually meet for an activity (e.g., movie, festival, tour, etc.) in the mid to late afternoon, followed by dinner at a local restaurant. You can come to the activity and skip dinner, come to dinner but skip the activity, or come to both. Most outings occur on the third Saturday of the month, though this is not set in stone (e.g., the June outing will be on the fourth Saturday in June). We will have a few flash outings in the future, so if you want to be kept apprised of last-minute activities ( Hey, a couple of us are going to a movie want to come? ), please let us know, as these flash events will be on short notice and only sent to those who request it. Call, text or Judy Taylor at / jtayloratty@att.net if you have any questions, want Flying Solo event reminders, or want to be alerted to flash activities.
PRAYER GROUP Prayer needs never cease, so the Prayer Group will continue to meet through the summer on the second Tuesday of the month at 6:30 p.m., in one of the classrooms downstairs. Summer prayer group will meet on Tuesdays, June 12, July 10 and August 14. Please join us to pray for your personal needs, as well as those of your family and friends. Due to scheduling conflicts, the previously announced dates for this year s Vacation Bible School (VBS) have changed. VBS will happen this year on July 9th through July 13 th, in the evenings from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m. Please keep that week open on your calendar, and get your children, grandchildren, friends and neighbors lined up to join us. We ll start with a light supper at 5:30, followed by Bible lessons (from the Book of Daniel), crafts, snacks, music and games. We will need many volunteers again this year, so if you can help us with food, supplies and/or labor, please sign up!! BRT will be partnering with us again this year, and we anticipate that they will handle snacks and crafts. St. Matthew s folks will handle dinner, set decoration, Bible stories and games. Father Orin will coordinate the sing-alongs. We ll have sign-up sheets out over the next couple of Sundays, so please sign up to help in any way you can. If you have any questions, please feel free to talk to Fr. Orin, Zella Forsythe, Judy Taylor or Pat Whitmore. THANK YOU TO WORSHIP COMMISSION I would like to thank the Worship Commission, Barbara Wegener- Chair, Ron Stockton-Music Director, and Patti McGill-Bell Player, for incorporating the bells into our service. It is wonderful to hear them as we sing our praises to the Lord. It is also a nice reminder of Esther Eckerle for whom the bells were purchased in her memory. Praise & Thanks,

St. Matthew s Episcopal & Blue Ridge Trinity Lutheran Join in a Combined Service to Celebrate Pentecost According to the Acts of the Apostles, "When the day of Pentecost had come, divided tongues, as of fire, rested on all who were gathered together and they were filled with the Holy Spirit". So the color at St. Matthew s Episcopal Church on Sunday May 20, 2018 was "RED". Red vestments, red balloons, red clothes, even red food for the celebration meal after the service. A parade around the church grounds prior to the service also included gospel music by the Wildwood Boys and special trumpet music during the service by a BRT trumpeter. St. Matthew's choir also sang a special Post Communion Anthem of "I'll Fly Away". Special thanks to Zella Forsythe for all her work and panning. It was a very special celebration for a very special day. Pictures continued next page.
