CHURCH STAFF Pastor Hartwig: Pastor Moldstad: Church Office: JESUS LAMBS AT PEACE PRESCHOOL PEACE LUTHERAN CHURCH Evangelical Lutheran Synod NOW THANK WE ALL OUR GOD Divine Service Sunday 8:30 & 10:45 AM Teacher/Director:Joslyn Moldstad Phone: Church website: Peacemankato.com SEPTEMBER 2, 2018 FIFTEENTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST WELCOME TO PEACE! The purpose of our congregation is to worship God, who gives life through Word and Sacrament; to serve one another in love and fellowship; and to proclaim forgiveness and salvation to all through Jesus Christ alone. PARENT S ROOM A room is available if your little one needs a moment. It is the first room on the right as you walk into the church building. Sound and video are piped into the room to enable you to hear and see the service. Changing tables are in both restrooms. FACILITIES Restrooms are located down the hall and on the right side. An induction loop is provided for the benefit of hearing aid users. To use, please switch your hearing aid to T. BEFORE WORSHIP As you prepare to worship your Lord today, spend a few quiet minutes in prayer before the service. Review the lessons, the service notes, and pray this prayer: PRAYER OF THE DAY O Lord Jesus Christ, preserve the congregation of believers with Your never-failing mercy. Help us avoid whatever is wicked and harmful, and guide us in the way that leads to our salvation; for You live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. 2
THE DIVINE SERVICE Rite 2, p. 60 OPENING HYMN: #466 WE PRAISE THEE, O GOD, OUR REDEEMER THE INVOCATION P: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. THE CONFESSION OF SIN P: Beloved in the Lord! Let us draw near with a true heart and confess our sins to God, our Father, beseeching Him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us forgiveness. P: I said, I will confess my transgressions to the Lord; 3
P: Let us bow before the Lord and confess our sins. C: O almighty God, merciful Father, I a poor, miserable sinner, confess to You all my sins and iniquities with which I have ever offended You and justly deserved Your temporal and eternal punishment. But I am heartily sorry for them, and sincerely repent of them, and I pray You of Your boundless mercy and for the sake of the holy, innocent, bitter sufferings and death of Your beloved Son, Jesus Christ, to be gracious and merciful to me, a poor, sinful being. P: I ask each of you, in the presence of God who searches the heart: Do you confess that you have sinned, and do you repent of your sins? C: I do. P: Do you believe that Jesus Christ has redeemed you from all your sins, and do you desire forgiveness in His name? C: I do. P: Upon this your confession, I, by virtue of my office as a called and ordained servant of the word, announce the grace of God to all of you, and in the stead and by the command of our Lord Jesus Christ I forgive you all your sins, in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. May He comfort your heart by His holy Absolution, and strengthen you by His Sacraments, that your joy may be full. Peace be with you! C: Amen. THE INTROIT P: O God, behold our Shield, and look upon the face of Your Anointed. A day in Your courts is better than a thousand. How lovely is Your tabernacle, O Lord of Hosts! My soul longs, yes, even faints, for the courts of the Lord. THE GLORIA PATRI 4

THE SALUTATION THE COLLECT P: Let us pray one God, now and forever. THE LESSON DEUTERONOMY 4:1-2, So now, Israel, listen to the statutes and the ordinances that I am teaching you, and carry them out so that you may live and so that you may enter the land that the LORD, the God of your fathers, is giving to you and take possession of it. 2 Do not add to the word that I am commanding you, and do not subtract from it, so that you keep the commandments of the LORD your God that I am commanding you. 6 Keep them and put them into practice, because in this way your wisdom and your understanding will be recognized by all the people who hear about all these statutes; 8
and they will say, This great nation is certainly a wise and understanding people, 7 because what other great nation is there that has a god as close to it as the LORD our God is to us whenever we call on him? 8 What other great nation is there that has statutes and ordinances as righteous as this entire law that I am presenting to you today? THE VERSE OF THE DAY P: Alleluia. Your words became a joy to me, and the delight of my heart. Alleluia. (Jeremiah 15:16 cf. RSV) THE ALLELUIA THE HOLY GOSPEL P: The Holy Gospel for the Fifteenth Sunday after Pentecost is written in the 7 th chapter of the Gospel according to St. Mark, beginning at the 1 st verse. THE GOSPEL MARK 7:1-8, 14-15, The Pharisees and some of the experts in the law came from Jerusalem and gathered around Jesus. 2 They saw some of his disciples eating bread with unclean (that is, unwashed) hands. 3 In fact, the Pharisees and all the Jews do not eat unless they scrub their hands with a fist, holding to the tradition of the elders. 4 When they come from the marketplace, they do not eat unless they wash. And there are many other traditions they adhere to, such as the washing of cups, pitchers, kettles, and 9
dining couches. 5 The Pharisees and the experts in the law asked Jesus, Why do your disciples not walk according to the tradition of the elders? Instead they eat bread with unclean hands. 6 He answered them, Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you hypocrites. As it is written: These people honor me with their lips, but their heart is far from me. 7 They worship me in vain, teaching human rules as if they were doctrines. 8 You abandon God s commandment but hold to human tradition like the washing of pitchers and cups, and you do many other such things. 14 He called the crowd to him again and said, Everyone, listen to me and understand. 15 There is nothing outside of a man that can make him unclean by going into him. But the things that come out of a man are what make a man unclean. 21 In fact, from within, out of people s hearts, come evil thoughts, sexual sins, theft, murder, 22 adultery, greed, wickedness, deceit, unrestrained immorality, envy, slander, arrogance, and foolishness. 23 All these evil things proceed from within and make a person unclean. P: This is the Holy Gospel of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. THE CREED P: Let us confess our holy faith in the words of the Apostles Creed: C: I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord; Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell; The third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; 10
From there He shall come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the Communion of Saints, the Forgiveness of sins, the Resurrection of the body, and the Life everlasting. Amen. THE CHIEF HYMN: #249 FIGHT THE GOOD FIGHT THE SERMON: EPHESIANS 6:10-20 UNITED IN CHRIST TO BE READY FOR BATTLE 10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. 11 Put on the full armor of God, so that you can stand against the schemes of the Devil. 12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the world rulers of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. 13 For this reason, take up the full armor of God, so that you will be able to take a stand on the evil day and, after you have done everything, to stand. 14 Stand, then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness fastened in place, 15 and with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace tied to your feet like sandals. 16 At all times hold up the shield of faith, with which you will be able to extinguish all the flaming arrows of the Evil One. 17 Also take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. 18 At every opportunity, pray in the Spirit with every kind of prayer and petition. Stay alert for the same reason, always persevering in your intercession for all the saints. 19 Pray for me also, that when I open my mouth a message will be given to me that boldly reveals the mystery of the gospel, 20 for which I am an ambassador in chains. Pray that I may speak about it boldly, as it is necessary for me to speak. THE OFFERTORY VERSE 11
