1 Essential Questions: Why is the Church necessary for the followers of Christ? Late Assignments: All assignments are due by the last day of LAP 2 for partial credit. Please take note of the assignments stating No NLP available. This means that the student may not use her NLP for that assignment because it is essential for class discussion. Therefore, failure to complete the assignment on time would result in a loss of credit. See the Incarnate Word grading policy for details. Retakes/Redos: Students scoring a 64% or below must on a summative assignment must REDO the assignment. Students will have until the following Friday (from receiving the REDO grade) to complete the REDO. (Again, see the Incarnate Word grading policy for details.) Overview: Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age (Matthew 28: 19-20). Jesus s words to the Apostles in the Great Commission summarizes the core purpose and mission of the Church. In this LAP, students will study the Church s origin, including the workings of the Trinity and the missionary actions of the Apostles. They will also explore how and why the Church grew so rapidly and the early conflicts that Christianity faced with both Jewish and Roman authorities. By doing so, students will begin to answer why the Church is necessary for Christianity. The time period to be covered within this LAP begins at Christ and continues through the second century (Christ-2nd Century). Rationale: As students continue to grow within the Incarnate Word Academy community and, primarily, in their relationship with God, it is essential to know the roots of Christianity, beginning with Christ and His apostles. It is through this understanding, that students will be able to dive deeper into further aspects of their faith and to discuss the basis of various beliefs and practices with others. Learning Goals: By completing this LAP, students can 1

2 1. Articulate the roles of each person of the Trinity in the development and success of the Church, as well as, discuss the implications of this involvement. 2. Examine why the Church is necessary in the life of a believer. 3. Illustrate the events of Pentecost. 4. Review the missionary work of the Apostles and major events in the early life of the Church. 5. Analyze the conflicts between the early Church and both Jewish and Roman leaders, including an assessment of how these events impacted the spread of Christianity. Summative Assessment: Test A test will act as the summative assessment for this LAP. The test will include multiple choice, fill in the blank, short answer, and essay questions. However, it will not be organized by type of question. Rather, the test will be arranged by the material and learning goals. For example, there could be a section of four multiple choice, one fill in the blank, and two short answer questions all relating to Pentecost, as opposed to one section for all multiple choice questions combining a variety of information. The reasoning is that both the student and the teacher will be able to clearly see what material is understood best by the student and, perhaps, the sections that the student may need to revisit. There will be five sections on this test. Students should use the Learning Goals (above), the daily lesson goals (in the agenda below), previous quizzes, and both classwork and homework to complete a study guide and review for the test. The Test will be in the Testing Center from: Open Lab: Why the Church? (45 minutes) For this Open Lab, students will continue to explore the necessity of the Church using Google Forms to guide them through the three part assignment. As they work, students should bullet point answers to the questions in a notebook first and then write a formal answer into the Assignment Must Be Completed and Turned In On or Before: 2

3 form. Therefore, students will need: a notebook, writing instrument, electronic device, and headphones. Students will find the questions below and should use them as a guide while they watch the videos and read the articles. Google Form: Questions: Part 1: Bethke (4mins) Summarize Bethke s main points. Then, explain your own thoughts and opinions about what Bethke was trying to convey using examples from the video. Part 2: Bishop Barron (9mins) According to Bishop Barron, is Jesus against religion? Support your answer using various examples. How do Bethke and Bishop Barron differ in viewpoints? What are things that they agree upon? Give examples. Part 3: Short Articles After watching both videos and reading more on the subject, why do both Bishop Barron and the articles recognize the need for religious community? In other words, why is a community (the Church) necessary according to Christ?(Give concrete evidence from either the video and/or readings.) St. Joan of Arc states, About Jesus Christ and the Church, I simply know they re just one thing, and we shouldn t complicate the matter. Discuss what she means in this quote and how this belief can impact the faith of a Christian. Submit the Google Form when finished. Project: No project for this LAP. 4 For this assignment students will continue to see how Christ intended the founding of the Church and our active participation in the family of God.. Students, then, should use their notes, book, and personal research to compile a list of Jesus s quotes in the Bible in which He teaches about the Church or the missionary role of the Apostles (must list at least 10, but there are more, please write out the quote and the citation). The student, then, should choose one of the quotes from the list to create a visual (collage, artwork, video, sculpture, or poster) stating the quote and demonstrating with concrete examples how the Church still carries out this teaching of Jesus in the world today. Finally, the student should write a one paragraph (6-8 sentences) explanation about her work, describing in words what is expressed in their visual.
