They had been married for 65 years. Hello, The Rector writes... Jesus has many titles. Luke shares with the other evangelists a number of these titles. LORD this is clearly Luke's favourite title for Jesus. It is notable that while the other evangelists never refer to Jesus as "the Lord" as they narrate the story of Jesus, Luke frequently does. This happens at least 14 times. Thus Luke presents Jesus as having authority along with God. Yet He is distinct from God who alone is called "Father." MASTER 7 times in Luke Jesus is addressed with the term Epistates. Master found nowhere else in the New Testament. On all but one of these occasions the word is used by His disciples (the exception being the 10 lepers). SAVIOUR Only Luke has this title. It is applied once to God and once to Jesus. Along with the related terms 'save' and 'salvation', we have here the central theme in Luke. PROPHET We find Jesus presented as a prophet, a messenger of God in Luke. Jesus compares Himself to the Old Testament prophets Elijah and Elisha. MESSIAH Hebrew/CHRIST Greek Both mean 'anointed One. This term was used of Jewish kings. Luke uses it as meaning that the Messiah suffers. SON of GOD It is related to Jesus' virgin conception. It forms the climax of the genealogy in Luke. The genealogy of Matthew only goes back to Abraham. Further, only in Luke do we find Jesus as a 12-year old with an awareness that God is His Father. Also, Luke alone has Jesus address God as "Father" while on the cross--twice. TEACHER This term is most frequently used in Luke and is a term of address used by those who are not disciples of Jesus. The new pew runners have proved to be a big success and aren t we all glad of the extra padding on those wooden seats! This has been a big expense for the church and we are very grateful to some parishioners who have generously donated funds in memory of loved ones who may have sat in our pews in previous years. 6 Ladies Guild I n June, we enjoyed our visit to Cloughmills Orange Hall to see the village that had been crafted by the ladies of the Crochet and Knitting club. It took just seven months to produce the finished product, which started out as a small project and just grew.. and grew... and grew! It s definitely worth a visit if you fancy a wee day out! The Guild will recommence next month on Wednesday 10th October. Further details will be available in October s magazine.
