Billy had a long association with St Mary Magdalene and enjoyed reading our magazine where he kept up with old friends and church news. He was an avid traveller and loved to revisit the town of his birth Castleblayney, Co Monaghan. In conversation with his family they told me that he was independent and strong willed, yet very kind and generous. He never wanted to be a burden to any of his family, and even though he was quite ill, he always put others first. The parishioners and I would like to assure Billy s sisters Margaret and Mary and his brother Diarmid of our thoughts and prayers as they continue their mourning. May those words of Jesus fill them with love and compassion, Blessed are those who mourn for they shall be comforted. 2 11

3 for our younger readers... The Rector writes... Apr 2012 Dear Parishioners THE RESURRECTION OF JESUS CHRIST FROM THE DEAD PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE HOPE n Easter Day the Christian Church will be celebrating the O greatest event in human history. We will be celebrating the Christian belief that Jesus Christ lived as an ordinary human being; he died and rose again after three days. Of course, the Church and countless Christians believe this to be an historical fact. Therefore, the resurrection of Jesus Christ will have great significance for our lives in the past, in the present and also in the future. The event of Christ's resurrection gives us an insight into the past. At the heart of each of the Gospel accounts, written 2000 years ago, there is the surprise discovery by the women on that first Easter Day that the unexpected, the unbelievable had happened - Jesus whom they had buried in the tomb on the evening of Good Friday, now stood before them in the Garden. As a consequence the fearful disciples and the mourning women who found Jesus, had their lives changed forever. As they encountered Jesus through faith and trust they would never be the same again. But the resurrection is also an event for the present. Christ is risen, this day and every day. The transforming power of the Risen Lord continues in the Church and in people s lives. The power of His resurrection is evident in bringing ordinary Christians closer to God, giving them power for their daily lives and transforming those who do not know him into committed followers. Quite simply the power and presence of the Risen Lord is still available in our lives in the year Lastly, the Risen lord has also consequences for our lives in the future. Because of the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead we too can know eternal life after our own deaths. Because of the power of the Risen Lord we can follow Christ to our personal resurrection through faith and trust in Him. He alone can help us live again after our earthly deaths. May we endeavour to follow Him as our Master and Lord so that we too can take our place in Heaven after this life is over. Hallelujah! What a Saviour. Rev Terry 10 3

We are delighted to report that a total of 270 was raised and has been passed on to Christian Aid. The talk given by Deborah Doherty from the organisation was thoughtprovoking and inspiring. TELL ME THIS WON'T HAPPEN TO US!!!! wo elderly ladies had been friends for many decades. Over the years, they had shared all kinds of activities and adventures. Lately, their activities had been limited to meeting a few times a week. One day, they were playing cards when one looked at the other and said, 'Now don't get mad at me... I know we've been friends for a long time, but I just can't think of your name! I've thought and thought, but I can't remember it. Please tell me what your name is. Her friend glared at her for at least three minutes. Finally she said, 'How soon do you need to know?'! The Rector plans to visit these homes over the next while, but in the meantime, please spread the word. If you happen to be parents who have had children baptised here, please mark this date in your calendar now. First Name Surname Address Date of Death The God with Sore Legs Sunday 27th May at am A new book by Rev Adrian McCartney was officially launched in The Good Book Shop on 6th March. Parishioners will remember Adrian telling us about his attempt to cycle around Ireland with some friends. These experiences have now been portrayed in the book The God with Sore Legs. The book outlines the two sides to the journey - its physical aspect together with the deep spiritual journey which Adrian and his friends experience. Not only does the book take its readers on a geographical tour around the Ards Peninsula and down into Co Wicklow, but it also takes them on a journey through John s Gospel, as the author wonders at the immensity of God becoming flesh and dwelling among us. The God with Sore Legs is currently available from The Good Book Shop, price It can also be bought via Amazon. The Church of Ireland Safeguarding Trust Policy operates in this church. Panel Members are Rev Terence Kerr, Mr Cecil Dunwoody and Mrs Catherine Irving. Notices to this effect have been placed in the church and halls. 8 5

6 he weekend of 9th -11th T March saw some of the company section boys take part in their Duke of Edinburgh bronze expedition in the Mourne Mountains. Over the Saturday and Sunday the boys had cooked their own meals and walked 15.5 miles. Just the written report to do and they should pass this part of the award! Please note that the BB will be having its Easter break on the nights of 5th and 12th April. We will resume on Thursday 19th at the usual times. Parents Evening & Presentation of Awards This will take place on Thursday 3rd May at 7.30pm. I hope you all will give your full support. Bill McMillan Captain 1st Irish Company Ladies Guild M any thanks to everyone who made our recent Musical Evening such a success. To Megan, Chloe and Ruth for their splendid display of Irish Dancing; To the old maids Jacqueline and Libby for their musical rendering of Two Old Maids ; And of course, to our resident one woman show Valerie for a really entertaining performance. We are thoroughly looking forward to our April meeting please note this will be held on Wednesday 18th April. During this evening we are having a speaker from the Titanic Association and we would like to invite anyone who wishes to attend to come along. This is not a la dies on ly evening all Gentlemen are invited also! Please write your name on the form at the back of the church if you plan to attend. Joan Rodgers President Titanic Talk Wednesday 18th 7.30 pm Everyone welcome Help please.. t has recently come to the attention of the Select Vestry that Burial I Records prior to the year 2000 are missing or incomplete. Searches through old church magazines (some dating back to 1926!) have provided many of the details required, but unfortunately many records are still not available. In order that we can update records as best as possible, we are urging you to help us by completing the form overleaf for any members of your family (or friends) who were members of this parish at the time of their death. You may not be able to provide all the information listed on the form, but any details you can supply will be valuable. Using the information from these forms will enable us to compile the records as far as possible. It is really important for us to update as many records as we can in order that the history of our church is maintained for future generations. Please use the form overleaf to give any details you may have, remembering that: 1. we only need details of deaths prior to the year 2000, and 2. the person must have been a parishioner of St Mary Magdalene at the time of death Please go back as far as you can in your family history. Completed forms can be left in the box at the back of the church. Your help with this task will be very much appreciated. Thank you 6 7
