1 ALL SAINTS DAY NOVEMBER 1, 2015 Of all three years of the lectionary cycle, this year s All Saints readings have the most tears. Isaiah and Revelation look forward to the day when God will wipe away all tears; in John s gospel, Jesus weeps along with Mary and all the gathered mourners before he demonstrates his power over death. On All Saints Day we celebrate the victory won for all the faithful dead, but we grieve for our beloved dead as well, knowing that God honors our tears. HOLY COMMUNION CELEBRATED WEEKLY We welcome to the Lord s Table all who are baptized and believe that the crucified and risen Christ is present in this meal. At the table of our Lord Jesus Christ, God nourishes faith, forgives sin, and calls us to be witnesses to the Gospel. Red wine is contained in the chalice (common cup), as well as in the communion trays. White grape juice is available in the center of the communion trays. When Holy Communion is served you are invited to come forward and kneel at the altar railing, or stand, if you are unable to kneel. If you do not wish to receive Holy Communion, you are still invited to come forward for a blessing. As the ministers give the bread and wine, they say these words to each communicant: The body of Christ, given for you. The blood of Christ, shed for you. The communicant may say: Amen. Blessed be the holy Trinity, one God, clothed in majesty ever since the world began, who loves us and frees us from our sins, who leads us with all the saints to everlasting life. Amen. Let us draw near with a true heart and confess our sins to God. Silence is kept for reflection. God our maker and redeemer, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed. We come for refuge to your infinite mercy. You have given your only Son to die for us; have mercy on us, and for his sake, forgive us all our sin. By your Holy Spirit, increase in us true knowledge of you and your will, and true obedience to your word, that by your grace we may come to everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

4 4 Almighty God has had mercy on us, and God s only Son has been given to die for us, and for his sake God forgives us all our sin. Believing in Jesus name, you have received power to become the children of God; you have received the gift of the Holy Spirit. Amen. 5 5 Prayer of the Day Almighty God, you have knit your people together in one communion in the mystical body of your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Grant us grace to follow your blessed saints in lives of faith and commitment, and to know the inexpressible joys you have prepared for those who love you, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. Sit First Reading: Isaiah 25:6-9 + WORD + Isaiah sees a vision of the end of days, when the Lord will gather all God s people on God s holy mountain and will prepare for them a rich feast. At this banquet the Lord will wipe the tears from all eyes. And there will be no more sorrow, for God will destroy death itself.

6 6 6 On this mountain the LORD of hosts will make for all peoples a feast of rich food, a feast of well-aged wines, of rich food filled with marrow, of well-aged wines strained clear. 7 And he will destroy on this mountain the shroud that is cast over all peoples, the sheet that is spread over all nations; 8 he will swallow up death forever. Then the Lord GOD will wipe away the tears from all faces, and the disgrace of his people he will take away from all the earth, for the LORD has spoken. 9 It will be said on that day, Lo, this is our God; we have waited for him, so that he might save us. This is the LORD for whom we have waited; let us be glad and rejoice in his salvation. Word of God, word of life. Thanks be to God. Psalm 24 They shall receive blessing from the God of their salvation. (Ps. 24:5) 1 The earth is the LORD s and all that is in it, the world and those who dwell therein. 2 For the LORD has founded it up- on the seas and established it up- on the rivers. 3 Who may ascend the mountain of the LORD, and who may stand in God s holy place? 4 Those of innocent hands and puri- ty of heart, who do not swear on God s being, nor do they pledge by what is false. 5 They shall receive blessing from the LORD and righteousness from the God of their salvation. 6 Such is the generation of those who seek you, O LORD, of those who seek your face, O God of Jacob. 7 Lift up your heads, O gates; and be lifted up, O ever- lasting doors, that the King of glory may come in. 8 Who is this King of glory? The LORD, strong and mighty, the LORD, might- y in battle!

Second Reading: Revelation 21:1-6a Here is a vision of the new heaven and new earth in which God resides fully with God s people so that mourning, despair, and pain have been eradicated. These renewing words from the God who spans all of time are trustworthy and true. 1 I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. 2 And I saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. 3 And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, See, the home of God is among mortals. He will dwell with them; they will be his peoples, and God himself will be with them; 4 he will wipe every tear from their eyes. Death will be no more; mourning and crying and pain will be no more, for the first things have passed away. 5 And the one who was seated on the throne said, See, I am making all things new. Also he said, Write this, for these words are trustworthy and true. 6a Then he said to me, It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. Word of God, word of life. 8 8 Gospel: John 11:32-44 Through the raising of Lazarus, Jesus offers the world a vision of the life to come, when death and weeping will be no more. The Holy Gospel according to St. John. Glory to you, O Lord. 32 When Mary came where Jesus was and saw him, she knelt at his feet and said to him, Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died. 33 When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who came with her also weeping, he was greatly disturbed in spirit and deeply moved. 34 He said, Where have you laid him? They said to him, Lord, come and see. 35 Jesus began to weep. 36 So the Jews said, See how he loved him! 37 But some of them said, Could not he who opened the eyes of the blind man have kept this man from dying? 38 Then Jesus, again greatly disturbed, came to the tomb. It was a cave, and a stone was lying against it. 39 Jesus said, Take away the stone. Martha, the sister of the dead man, said to him, Lord, already there is a stench because he has been dead four days. 40 Jesus said to her, Did I not tell you that if you believed, you would see the glory of God? 41 So they took away the stone. And Jesus looked upward and said, Father, I thank you for having heard me. 42 I knew that you always hear me, but I have said this for the sake of the crowd standing here, so that they may believe that you sent me. 43 When he had said this, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come out! 44 The dead man came out, his hands and feet bound with strips of cloth, and his face wrapped in a cloth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. Prayers of Intercession United into one by the power of the Holy Spirit, let us pray with all God s saints for healing, wholeness, and peace in all the earth. A brief silence. God of glory, we ask your blessing for chaplains, deaconesses, and diaconal ministers. Grant them wisdom and compassion as they embody your grace in the forgotten places of this world. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

10 We seek your healing for oceans, streams, hot springs, and lakes. Clean the waterways damaged by human carelessness and provide all who thirst access to fresh water. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. We seek your protection and healing for veterans, civil rights leaders, and military personnel. Where there is pain, bring comfort. Where there is anger, bring mercy. Where there is war, bring peace. Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. We seek your healing for all who struggle with addiction, mental illness, physical ailment, or spiritual distress. Refresh them with the water of life and fill them with your abundant love (specially). Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. We ask your blessing for nurses, doctors, social workers, and emergency responders. Sustain them to be vessels of your healing and comfort. Empower them to restore wholeness to the broken and hope to the despairing (especially). Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. 10 Here other intercessions may be offered. We give you thanks for all the saints (those who have died during the past year may be named). Wipe away our tears of sorrow and mourning, and when we die, bring us to the church triumphant. 12 Preface It is indeed right, our duty and our joy, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks and praise... we praise your name and join their unending hymn: Holy, Holy, Holy 12 Thanksgiving at the Table Holy God, holy and mighty, holy and immortal: surrounded by evil and bordered by death we appeal to you, our Sovereign, our Wisdom, and our Judge. We praise you for Christ, who proclaimed your reign of peace and promised an end to injustice and harm. In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. 18 18 Commemorations for the Week All Saints Day Sunday, November 01, 2015 The custom of commemorating all of the saints of the church on a single day goes back at least to the third century. All Saints Day celebrates the baptized people of God, living and dead, who make up the body of Christ. On this day or the following Sunday, many congregations will remember the faithful who have died during the past year. Martín de Porres Tuesday, November 03, 2015 Martín was the son of a Spanish knight and a freed black slave from Panama. As a lay brother in the Order of Preachers (Dominicans), he engaged in many charitable works in Lima, Peru. He founded an orphanage, a hospital, and a clinic for cats and dogs. J.C.F. Heyer, B. Ziegenbalg, L. Nommensen Saturday, November 07, 2015 Heyer was the first missionary sent out by American Lutherans. After teaching at Gettysburg College and Seminary he was assigned to the Andhra region of India. A worker among the Tamil people on the southeast coast of India, Ziegenbalg was opposed both by local Hindus and by Danish authorities who favored a different missionary style. He was known for caring about the welfare of the whole person. Nommensen was born in northern Germany and was sent to Sumatra as a Lutheran missionary. Working among the Batak people, he translated the scriptures into their language, and honored their native culture.
