2 People of hope - What does this mean to you? Today s use of the word hope means little more than wishful thinking. Paul s use of the word means an overwhelming confidence a sure hope. Nothing can be more certain than the Word of God, for God, who never lies, promised before the ages began and at the proper time manifested in his word (Titus 1:2-3) What can you do to help establish a discipleship program in your club? The next study will reveal how Paul answers this very question. Having completed this lesson, re-read the passage and note any new understanding of the passage: Paul, a servant of God and an apostle of Jesus Christ, for the sake of the faith of God's elect and their knowledge of the truth, which accords with godliness, in hope of eternal life, which God, who never lies, promised before the ages began and at the proper time manifested in his word through the preaching with which I have been entrusted by the command of God our Savior; To Titus, my true child in a common faith: Grace and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Savior. 3 the ministry of the Gospel requires that when we bring people to Christ, we introduce them to a fellowship of believers that takes seriously the fact that they are to be God s very own people in their geographical locations. Briscoe, pg.17 The ministry of the CMC is to bring believers in Christ to a fellowship of believers who take seriously the fact that they are to be God s very own people in their geographical locations. What does it mean to be a club (God s people) in our geographical location? For where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I among them." Briscoe pg.25 People of faith What does this mean to you? In our text it means to know what it is to be justified by faith. It means to be in fellowship with God (being right with God). What does justified mean? What does in fellowship with mean? What does by faith mean? People of knowledge - What does this mean to you? In our text it means to have a knowledge of truth leading to godliness. Not all truth leads to godliness, so where do we find the truth that leads to godliness? The word knowledge here is epignosis which would be better translated acknowledge. It is precise and correct knowledge. An accumulation of correct data and facts about God. It is to know thoroughly and to acknowledge that you know it thoroughly. With this in mind, is there any excuse for believers to not know their Theology? The word godliness here is eusebeia. (Tit 1:1-4) What is required of a person to become a member of a CMC (another list to keep and add to or adjust later)? For most CMCs the first criteria for membership is that the person be a believer according to Romans 10:9 because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. (Rom 10:9) Then what follows is things like time served, amount of riding, type of bike, demonstrated commitment and so on all worthy of consideration. The thing that can be missed is in Matt.28:19 make disciples. Is discipleship considered when identifying a member? What is discipleship? For Paul, evangelism was a major part of that which is important, but for him it was just a start. He is telling Titus that discipleship is also important by forming new fellowships, assemblies or churches. For CMCs, evangelism is major, but also just a start. Discipleship is also a high priority. When it comes to sharing your faith and helping someone come to Christ, do you know what to do? When it comes to making a disciple from the new convert, do you know what to do? The answers to these questions will guide you into what you need to do next in regards to your spiritual growth. Remember God s part is to purify and grow the club, Our part is to provide the environment for that purifying and growth. Here is the CMCs discipleship program in a nut shell. 5 The believer who is in reverse growth is in reversionism. reversionism is the regression of the believer from any stage of spiritual growth or maturity to the modus vivendi of the unbeliever (2Pet.2:20-21). Reversionism is characterised by perpetual carnality and a continual neglect or rejection of Bible doctrine, resulting in a life of misery (Hosea 8:7) that without rebound eventuates in the sin leading to death (1Jn.5:16) (Thie me, pg42, Levitical Offerings, 2004) Discuss what carnality is (be sure to explore what the Scriptures say)? What does Bible doctrine mean to you? What does the perpetual carnality + continual neglect or rejection of Bible doctrine do? Read 1Jn.1:9 this is rebound. Discuss. Identify areas where you have demonstrated spiritual advance or reversionism over the past 12 months. Verfiy with the witness of two or three trusted brothers/sisters. How much time in the last week have you spent in a state of carnality? Have you been neglecting or rejecting Bible doctrine? If rebound is necessary, do so before moving on to the next study and erase the answers to the last two questions (God has erased them). It is about making disciples of whoever God causes to come across our path, biker or not! Principles to keep in mind: God s part is to purify and grow the club, Our part is to provide the environment for that purifying and growth. As the spiritual growth of the CMC member goes, so goes the growth of the CMC. We advance grow or we reverse grow (most bikes don t have a reverse gear). Growth is not automatic. The decisions we make and the action we take will cause us to advance or reverse. This study is about how to advance. 7 How to effectively grow a CMC as taught by Paul to Titus By Rodney Osborne This study quotes from the ESV translation of the Bible and uses Purifying the Church: What God Expects of You and Your Church, A Topical Commentary on Titus, Stuart Briscoe, Regal Books, 1987 as its primary resource. Before beginning this study, take a few minutes to discuss how you would go about causing growth in your CMC. Keep this list and return to it often during the study to make any additions or adjustments. Causing a Christian Motorcycle Club to grow differs from how any other motorcycle organisation causes growth, in that as believers in the Lord Jesus Christ, our mandate is not to make numbers, but to make disciples. Go therefore and make disciples of all na ons, bap zing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, (Mat 28:19) Causing a Christian Motorcycle Club to grow effectively differs from how Christian organisations cause growth. If it has ever been said, we grew faster than we could manage or our growth has overtaken our structure to cater for it, growth has not been effective growth and the numbers will soon go back to what they were.
