1 Mission statement We are an autonomous, pious foundation that works in collaboration with members of our Diocese of Orange to raise, manage, grow and grant funds supporting all aspects of the Catholic faith following each donor s intent. the Orange Catholic Foundation News for Donors progress report Fall 2017 Executive Director s Corner With gratitude to God for you and your generosity to our Diocese of Orange, we hope you enjoy reading about the progress of our many projects and programs. In these pages you will see how your support has allowed your Orange Catholic Foundation to express our Catholic faith through diverse contributions of time, talent, and treasure. We remain grateful to all of our donors to our Pastoral Services Appeal (PSA), our Conference on Business & Ethics, our many other events, programs, funds, and endowments, and to those who completed their For Christ Forever Capital Campaign pledges. Your contributions allow us to provide for ministries that feed and clothe the poor, educate our youth, advance religious vocations, help parishes and schools renovate and repair facilities, and give our aging priests added confidence for a dignified retirement. Looking ahead to 2018, we will continue in our mission to raise, manage, grow, and grant funds supporting all aspects of our Catholic faith following our donors intent. We will do this based upon the foundational principles of Christian stewardship, ethical and transparent governance, Catholic evangelization, and faith formation. Similar to this year, we will focus on three primary goals: 1. Complete the fundraising goals for the Christ Cathedral worship space 2. Raise funds and grow endowments to support Catholic schools, and 3. Work in collaboration with our donors throughout the diocese to support their philanthropic goals. A Christian steward is a person who receives God s gifts gratefully, cherishes and tends to them in a responsible and accountable manner, shares them in justice and love with others, and returns them with increase to the Lord. Since its inception, the Orange Catholic Foundation has been promoting stewardship education in all of our parishes and centers. In September of this year 24 delegates from the Diocese of Orange participated in the International Catholic Stewardship Council (ICSC) Conference held in Atlanta, GA. We were extremely pleased to receive the 2017 Award of Excellence for Total Diocesan Stewardship Effort. The Orange Catholic Foundation was also recognized with an Honorable Mention Award for our 2017 Pastoral Services Appeal video. heavenly Lights the perfect christmas gift! The Orange Catholic Foundation is providing an opportunity to be a part of the transformation of Christ Cathedral by digitally dedicating one of the iconic structure s 11,236 glass window panes as a perpetual Heavenly Light that will shine for generations to come. These gifts of Heavenly Lights provide a beautiful way to honor loved ones and milestone events with a permanent place in our worship space. Supporters of this transformation may select and secure their Heavenly Lights virtual dedication from sections of the Cathedral, which are named in honor of various saints: St. Michael the Archangel, St. Teresa of Calcutta (Mother Teresa), St. John Paul II, St. Junipero Serra, St. Thomas Aquinas, St. Francis of Assisi, St. Ignatius, St. Patrick, St. Augustine, St. Teresa of Avila, St. Anthony of Padua, St. Therese of Lisieux, and St. Thomas More. Dedication opportunities start at $40, which come with a certificate of authenticity, a letter of thanks from Bishop Kevin Vann, and a prayer intention that will be offered at the Epiphany Mass in Donors gifting $100 or more will also receive a Christmas season ornament. (See adjacent photo). Funds raised through the Heavenly Lights dedications will be used for renovation work and in an endowment for the ongoing maintenance of Christ Cathedral and its 34-acre campus. 3 worship space under construction CHRIST CATHEDRAL UPDATE The interior of Christ Cathedral has been transformed in appearance as construction continues. Nearly 72 construction crewmembers are working in the space each day. Here s what s going on now: Massive scaffolding has been erected on the east, west, and south balconies Cleaning and painting of the space frame in the balconies and the worship level is now completed Structural demolition is complete The worship-level floor strengthening is compete The undercroft plumbing lines and structural beam work is complete The concrete for the Predella has been poured Following all of this, the uni-struts will be attached to the framing, and the quatrefoils will be installed. Next up will be the installation of the lighting, sound equipment, fire sprinklers, and mechanical equipment. The scaffolding will be in place through July of next year. Anticipated completion of the Cathedral is scheduled for early rendering of the worship space our lady of lavang shrine rendering Our Lady of La Vang Shrine Project On October 24, 2017, Bishop Vann joined more than three thousand Vietnamese Catholics and clergy for a ceremonial blessing of the future site of a shrine dedicated to Our Lady of La Vang in the Marian Court on the Christ Cathedral campus. The special ceremony was accented by traditional Vietnamese dancers and a large outdoor Mass. This seminal project was announced by Bishop Vann and a core group of Vietnamese community and business leaders in December Since the announcement, the future shrine design process has been completed, and significant fundraising has taken place at parishes to fund construction of the shrine. The energy and excitement within the Vietnamese Catholic community to build a shrine to the patroness of the Vietnamese people has been a blessing to our ministry at Christ Cathedral. I am pleased that the diligent efforts of the volunteers supporting this effort have reached this important milestone, the completion of the design phase for the shrine and the ceremonial blessing of the future site, said Bishop Vann. It is appropriate that such a significant shrine be built at the center of the communities that are home to the largest Vietnamese population outside of Vietnam. The community of Vietnamese- American Catholics, many of whom fled Vietnam 40 years ago and found refuge in the homes and churches of Orange County Catholics, have pledged to raise funds to build the shrine. It will become part of the planned Marian Court to be located in the plaza just outside of the cathedral. page 3

4 Supporting tuition assistance, infrastructure improvements, and technology for our Catholic schools remain a priority for the Orange Catholic Foundation. In the past seven fiscal years, we have granted more than $15 million in tuition assistance and established a tuition assistance endowment fund presently valued at $8 million. The Orange Catholic Foundation makes a difference for our school children Our donors have helped our schools become the first in Southern California to have 1:1 technology that equips each student with an ipad or Chromebook. We were the first diocesan school system in the nation to implement a full fiber optic backbone network. Another first every student in our diocesan schools have access to thousands of academic texts online through our innovative digital library. This robust and integrated technology platform enables customized learning for the individual student as well as preparing them for their academic future. Technology aside, we know that values define us. They are the signposts we choose for our lives. Catholic education reinforces the core values of Christian behavior, promoting the principles of ethics and integrity. Catholic classrooms focus on the BIGGEST subjects: Confidence, Kindness, and Faith. Catholic schools develop young men and women of character. Through the Orange Catholic Foundation, our donors are providing these young men and women an opportunity to become the best version of themselves and graduate to become a greater value to our community. To celebrate Catholic Schools Week in January, we launched a video contest in which students in our Catholic middle and high schools will compete for their share of $4,500 in tuition grants by producing a two-minute video that exemplifies how their school is helping shape their character as true disciples of Christ. Conference on Business & Ethics Our 15th Annual Conference on Business & Ethics was an unparalleled success. It opened Friday morning, May 12 to a capacity audience of 1,100 people at the Anaheim Hilton. More than 500 viewers watched the live simulcast from our website. Emmy Award winning actress Patricia Heaton and Dodger baseball legend Vin Scully made stellar presentations. Each of these superstars inspired, motivated, and strengthened the resolve of many Catholics while subtly evangelizing others. And they did it flawlessly with interesting, entertaining, and humorous stories. We closed the event with both keynotes and other celebrities, including the Angels General Manager Mike Scioscia, taking the stage to lead everyone in one decade of the Holy Rosary. Photos and videos of all presentations can be viewed on our website. While the purpose of the Conference is to provide an annual forum for business leaders in Orange County, it also raises funds to provide financial aid for Catholic elementary students in our Diocese of Orange. This year, we raised $704,427 and a net profit of $588,933; an all-time record! This means that hundreds of young children from financially challenged families will be able to attend our Catholic schools next year and beyond. We hope that you will be able to join us at the 16th Annual Conference on Business & Ethics to be held on the morning of Friday, May 4, 2018 at the Hotel Irvine. Cardinal Timothy Dolan will be our keynote presenter. Father Dave Dwyer, host of the Busted Halo Program on the Catholic Channel will be the master of ceremonies.
