2 From the Pastor s Pen The Place of Failure No matter how hard we try we fall short in our trying. God has given us free will. We can choose to do right or we choose to do wrong. Oftentimes, we just do not make the right choices. But, there is some good news! God will meet us with His mercy, grace and forgiveness in our place of failure. chastises. The Lord met Adam and Eve in the place of failure, but with the promise of future redemption. We all fall short sometimes - we, at times, hide out in our place of failure. But thank God for Jesus, who meets us in our place of sin, and when we repent, restores, forgives and places us back in the fellowship with Him. Who wouldn t serve a God like that? When Adam and Eve fell short in the Garden of Eden, God met them in their sin-filled situation, in their place of failure. He met them in their place of failure. Adam and Eve, by their own free will, chose to disobey God. Adam, realizing his nakedness, was consumed with fear and hid himself from God. Their unwise choice caused them to move from innocence to consciousness - from fellowship with God to disunion. God provided clothes for them, but they were punished for their sin. We will be punished for our sins as well. Let us never forget, whom the Lord loves, He An Easter Prayer We worship your holy name and give thanks for your redeeming grace. Heavenly Father, May we drink in your tender love so that we can pour this love out to others. Come reign in our hearts, minds and spirits. O Lord, Risen, alive and full of grace. You paid such a price that we may live in freedom today. Holy Spirit, We welcome you to blow through our every word, action and thought. Come transform us on the inside so that each day we become more like our risen Lord. Amen. 2

4 A lifetime of second chances, Romans 5:1-6. Paul used a beautiful phrase to describe the believer s position in Christ: We have obtained our introduction by faith into this grace in which we stand (Romans 5:2). This is no puddle of mercy that barely wets the toes, but rather a mighty ocean. The Lord s kindness wraps around us without regard for our past mistakes and failures. God s grace is an essential concept for believers to understand. He freely offers His favor to mankind because Jesus sacrifice on the cross purchased forgiveness and salvation for anyone who believes. However, many people think they are enjoying God s kindness when what they are really trying to do is earn it. If we have to purchase, merit, or work for grace, then it is not a gift (Ephesians 2:8-9). The Lord is very clear that works cannot save us. In fact, He compares our good deeds to filthy rags (Isaiah 64:6). On the other hand, God s grace is not license to be Wisdom to Live By lazy; Christians are called upon to serve the Lord every day. From the outside, it is usually impossible to distinguish between works and service in someone else s life. But God knows the motivation of every heart. He is pleased by the things we do to show Him our love and to express appreciation for His countless blessings. Such actions bring glory to His name. Keep in mind that serving God in order to earn His favor or ensure that He continues blessing you amounts to thwarting grace. You can do nothing to deserve the Lord s kindness! He pours it upon believers freely, so the only thing you can do is receive it. ~Dr. Charles Stanley Wellness News Cool it! Your waistline and overall health may benefit. Fire in the belly is generally considered a good thing - that inner drive that helps you accomplish goals. But a different kind of fire in your belly is best avoided. Visceral abdominal fat lies deeper than the pinch an inch variety (known as subcutaneous fat) and emits chemicals that increase inflammation and can harm your health. A new preliminary study adds fuel to the fire (so to speak!). Researchers found that the inflammation that occurs in visceral fat inhibits the body s ability to burn fat, potentially creating a vicious cycle that contributes to disease and makes it difficult to lose weight. While more research is necessary to understand the health and treatment implications of this study, there s no need to wait to follow an anti-inflammatory lifestyle. Doing so may help with weight loss and reduce your risk of chronic illnesses like heart disease, diabetes, certain types of cancer, and Alzheimer s. What you eat can either stoke or cool your inner fire, so make anti-inflammatory foods such as vegetables, fruit, legumes, herbs and spices, nuts, and wild salmon or ocean trout the base of your weekly menu. Avoid pro-inflammatory food like processed and fried foods, refined sugar, red meat, hydrogenated fats, and simple carbohydrates like white bread. And since regular physical activity (both moderate cardio and resistance exercise) helps to keep harmful inflammation at bay, commit to an exercise routine. To stick with it, pick something you enjoy, whether swimming, walking, or dancing. ~Cleveland Clinic Wellness 4

5 Senior Moments... The Senior Adult Ministry (SAM) will tour historic Gee s Bend on April 15. Sister Felicia Williams, a native of Gee s Bend, will serve as tour guide. Officially known as Boykin, Gee s Bend is a block of land enclosed on three sides by the Alabama River in rural Wilcox County in Alabama s Black Belt. It was named for Joseph Gee, a large landowner from Halifax County, N.C., who settled here in Gee brought 18 African-American slaves with him and established a cotton plantation within the bend. Gee s Bend is famously known for the Gee s Bend Quilters. In 2003, all the living quilters of Gee s Bend, more than 50 women, founded the Gee s Bend Quilters Collective to serve as the exclusive means of selling and marketing the quilts being produced by the women of the Bend. The Collective is owned and operated by the women of Gee s Bend. Every quilt sold by the Collective is unique, individually produced and authentic. 6 Congratulations... Congratulations to Brother Dayton Malone, who recently participated in Vanderbilt's WAVU on March 4. Weekend Academy at Vanderbilt University is designed for gifted students in grades 7 through 10 who typically test at the 95th percentile and above on either verbal or nonverbal sections of academic achievement or ability tests. This innovative, overnight academic experience provides qualifying students with a taste of college life. Held for one weekend each spring and fall, WAVU sessions include accelerated courses taught by Vanderbilt faculty and scholars and recreational group activities. Congratulations to Brother Ezekiel Bell, who recently received the U. S. Space Camp and Academy Scholarship. The scholarship was presented by the National Society of Black Engineers, at its 24th Annual Scholarship Program. Ezekiel is a 6th grader at Academy for Science and Foreign Language (ASFL). He has completed projects on meteor impact, aerodynamics, and seismology. He is a member of the Boys and Girls Club basketball and soccer teams. He wants to attend Space Camp because he is a fan of rockets and science. Congratulations to Bertha Elizabeth Jones, the daughter of Sister Shirley Jones, M.D., and the granddaughter of the late Mother Bertha Rice Jones, she was recently accepted into the Phi Eta Sigma National Honor Society at Florida State University.
