1 Volume 1, Issue 10 Bethany Church on the Hill October 2017 Dear Bethany, This month is so significant for the Protestant faith, because, on October 31st, 1517, we as evangelical Christians will celebrate to the very day the 500th anniversary of Martin Luther s ( ) nailing his 95 theses upon the church door in Wittenberg, Germany. His doing so was not to spark needless controversy and thus to start a new church or movement, but to initiate healthy dialog, and that mainly regarding the selling of indulgences remissions of punishment yet due for forgiven sins. In the gracious providence of God, this protest by Luther sparked a wholesale debate over many other matters of eternal concern, including what we as Protestants hold dear: the doctrine of justification by faith alone. Would you take time out of your busy life to pause and thank God for allowing us to recapture the true gospel of God s free grace? If there had been no reformation in Luther s day, and no subsequent reform of the church in general, we would still be living in the Dark Ages with our salvation left up to us! Praise God that we are seeing the saving gospel of Jesus Christ shining brightly in our own day a gospel without works of any kind, and based solely upon His merit and not our own! In relation to this celebration of the birth of the Protestant Reformation, I want to invite you to come to our Fifth Sunday FIRE (Fellowship of Independent Reformed Evangelicals) Fellowship, to be held at Bethany Church on the Hill on Sunday evening, October 29, at 6:00 PM. We will have the opportunity to worship together as five churches and to hear great preaching about the grace of God from Pastor Errol Hale of Grace Bible Church in Moorpark. We will have a time of fellowship and refreshments afterward. Please join us for a wonderful time together around God s Word! Soli Deo Gloria, Pastor Lance 9:00 am 4:00 pm We want to encourage folks to head over to the fair after church and engage the community. Talk to people about Jesus! Find out who they are and where they are at! Show the community that we care! We will have a booth there for the school and church so we can direct people who have questions about the church or school. Sunday, October 22 All-church potluck luncheon followed by Q&A session regarding Constitution Amendments about term limits and minimum number of Elders. Sunday, November 12 All-church potluck luncheon followed by Congregational Meeting to vote on Constitutional changes. Broadcaster
2 Our Mission Broadcaster 2 Loft House Project Hands of Mercy s mission is to strengthen the Body of Christ by discipling families and individuals to love others in tangible ways. We help churches build loft houses in their parking lot and facilitate weekend and short-term, cross-cultural ministry opportunities. Hands of Mercy encourages all members of the family to serve together and has no age restrictions. What is a loft house? A loft house is prefabricated in church parking lots in the US and assembled in Mexico in a day. Though not luxurious by any definition, a loft house gives some basic protection and shelter from the elements. A loft house is a 12-foot by 12-foot structure with 4 windows, a lockable door and a second story attic loft for sleeping that is reached by an interior ladder. The kit-house consists of prefabbed panels made from simple building materials, widely available at most home improvement warehouses: 2x4s, 2x6s, plywood and tar paper roofing. The house has a raised wooden floor, covered with linoleum, built on concrete piers. This speeds construction time by eliminating extra days to pour and cure a cement slab. Work teams can build loft houses on lots that would not be suitable for slab construction. For about $3,500, these homes exhibit a visible testimony to the love of Jesus to the new home owners and their entire community. Bethany Missions Team s Loft House Prebuild & Delivery October 21 8:30am-2:00pm Join the Bethany s Missions Team to fabricate loft house panels in Bethany s parking lot for a family in Mexico. We ll need about 40 men, women and children to accomplish this task. We ll also need a smaller crew of 4 men with chop saws to start at 7:00 am to cut the wood in preparation for the day. October The panels will be hauled to Mexico. Bethany volunteers will construct the loft house and provide a care package. We still have a few spots open if you want to join us! Care Package Donate items for the care package, see the needs on the next page... Volunteer now and get your whole family involved! Questions? Please contact Bob Amstutz: (310) or b1amstutz@aol.com

A private area is also available for nursing mothers. *Nursery care is offered during Equipping Hour and during Sunday morning and evening services. TODDLERS WALKERS THROUGH 3 YEARS We welcome our toddlers with free play to ease transition into the classroom. Our curriculum aims to train young children how to sit during a brief Bible story and participate in songs that teach biblical truths. A gluten-free snack is provided at each service. We are excited to share that beginning in September on Sunday mornings, we will be doing a new curriculum published by Awana, designed especially for toddlers, called Puggles. The curriculum is made up of 4 units, with each unit broken down into 8 lessons. The children will also be doing a coloring sheet that ties in with the lesson to take home. *The nursery will be open and available for babies and any toddlers who might need it during the 9:00 am Equipping Hour. During the 10:30 service time, the toddlers are learning about creation. PRESCHOOL 3 5 YEARS Our preschool program encourages classroom participation while learning Biblical truths. Each activity is prepared with the Bible lesson in mind to help our preschoolers remember what they have learned. *This class is offered during the Equipping Hour and during Sunday morning services. 9 Isaiah 61:3 "So they will be called Oaks of Righteousness, the planting of the Lord, and that He may be glorified." On Saturday, October 14, Pastor Jordan Bakker, Pastor of Grace Brethren Church in Simi Valley, will be our guest speaker at Bethany s Men's Breakfast from 8:30 am to 10:30 am. Be sure to sign up! This fall our men's groups are studying several exciting and dynamic books. One such book is An Infinite Journey by Andrew Davis, who also wrote Revitalize! If you have not attended one of our studies, do not hesitate to begin anew! You will be blessed in growth in the Word and in relationships with our beloved men! In An Infinite Journey, Andrew Davis challenges us men to make ambitious resolutions in Scripture memorization, prayer, and character development! He says that we should yearn to reach the end of our days here on the earth knowing that we never rested in our efforts to grow to maximum Christlikeness! We should always be growing in the grace and knowledge of Christ so that we can lead as many souls to Christ as he permits. We should run the internal race with perseverance so we can run the external race with eternal fruitfulness: more and more souls for Christ. Amen!
