February 26, 1965 Volume X, Number 18 TALES OF THE COVENANTERS BANOUET NEXT WEEK Social Committee Hard at Work Saturday, March 6 at 6:30 p.m. is the time set for Covenant's biggest social of the year, its tenth annual Tales of the Covenanters 3ariquet. Tickets are now being sold by Larry Birchler and Bobbie Morris. The traditional date is commemorative of the day which marked the beginning of the chain of events which led to Covenant's being established as an institution of learning. Always top-secret, the central theme of each banquet is based on a literary work which may be considered a classic, Past themes included Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. Carroll's Alice in Wonderland. Harris's Tales of Uncle Remus, and, most recently, Mark Twain's Life on the Mississippi. Offering a great variety of entertainment, the program almost always contains the funniest skits of the year. Students who miss this particular banquet are missing an affair that belongs to the essence of Covenant. MACNAIR LEAVES MARK ON CAMPUS Speaking this past week for Covenant's annual Missionary Emphasis Week, Rev. Donald MacNair surprised many students by not relating the usual number of stories about missionaries on the field. Instead he emphasized two integrally related subjects. In the morning meetings, 'r, MacNair pounded home the fact of the Christian's responsibility to teach others, thus taking part in an ever widening cycle of evangelism. His primary text was Matthew 28:19 and 20.

An entirely different stress was laid in the evening series of sermons as.hr, MacNair impressed on the minds of Covenanters the real meaning of The Lord's Prayer and its application to their lives right now. Not only has Mr. MacNair managed to successfully put the concept "missions" into a new light, but he has also been personally helpful to a large number of students through individual interviews as well as through his public messages. SENIOR FILMS Advertized as "A Look at Missions" through several Moody Science Films (and Walt Disney cartoons), a Friday night film-festival has been planned by the increasingly active Senior class for the benefit of any interested visitors and students. Costing only 35? per person (special rates of 60c per couple), the 9 p.m. program will be followed by a time of refreshment in the dining hall. TIVOLI CGNCERT The Columbus Boychoir will present a concert in the Tivoli Theater in Chattanooga on Wednesday, March 10, at 8:00 p.m. Sacred, classical and folk numbers and an operetta will be included on the program. Tickets - $2.50. BB TOURNEY.SATURDAY A number of students will be traveling to a basketball tournament in Franklin Springs, Georgia tomorrow via charter bus. The tournament will involve three other local colleges and, in order to win, the Scots will really need enthusiastic support from the student body. * * * They'd Rather "Switchboard" than Fight... Those poor, bedraggled, beworked office girls ask, plead, beg that students refrain from reading magazines or holding unnecessary conversations at the front desk. However good-intentioned, students who are persistently annoying not only interfere with the studying of girls x/ho work at night, but also distract secretaries busy during the day with routine duties and with trying to help visitors. Thanks for helping with this problem! * * *

CAMPUS CHOIR Those members of the Campus Choir not present last Monday night, please note that the Monday night chorus and the Chorale will have joint rehearsals on Friday at 2:10 in the Chapel from now until Easter, All those who plan to sing in the Easter Sunday presentation must attend these rehearsals. MAKE-UP TESTS The "make-up" test period this semester has been set for Tuesdays at 2:10 in the Registrar's office. Students in Physics will make up tests at another time. RESTRICTIONS ON CHAPEL PIANO All students should note that there will be no practicing permitted on the chapel piano for any reason. Practicing should be done in the basement practice rooms. CHAPEL SCHEDULE. March 1-5 Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thurs day Friday Class Meetings Mr. Dameron Mr. Dameron Mr. Lambert Dr, Rayburn EDITORIALS COVENANT TO GET "STUDENT" PAPER Since THE BAGPIPE has proved too small to contain the expansive views of some of our more explosive geniuses, a certain widely-discussed literator has risen up unexpectedly from the midst of Covenant's student body (rather as a weed grows unexpectedly in a well-tended garden, if we may be so trite) who is considering accepting the editorship of a fresh, new, exciting, honest, candid paper. Not to be confused with The Windbag, our annually published, legitimate rival, this proposed addition to the Fourth Estate has as its primary end the obtaining of freedom for disgruntled students whose foremost avocation in college is the verbalization of their disgrunt. None of the staff of THE BAGPIPE would ever have suspected this apparently rampant dissatisfaction with our admittedly small publication, however, since our even smaller "Letters to the Editor" section has been virtually empty for weeks, and since even the most impulsive innovators will usually take advantage of available means ; before they invent new ones.

The most obvious implication of the disclosure of such an idea is, of course, that our present1-paper needs to be unshackled from the oppresive chains of that allpurpose, pin-any-gripe-on-it problem known as "faculty control," Almost laughable irony is involved in this particular contention though, since the only source of offense to the aforementioned "literator* has been the editor of THE BAGPIPE (who has refused to publish one of his poems), and not its rather astonished advisor, who chuckled that she is flattered if students really think she has "...that much powers," Although we hesitated to publicize this puerile "plot," for fear that it might snowball and attract every potential paranoid on campus, we feel very relieved now that it has been exposed so relieved, in fact, that we are even prepared to help its "editor" select a title. Since most of its copy will probably consist of rejected "epics," our new little tabloid ought, by all means, to be called The Exhaust Pipe. To the Editor: The Editor Last' Tuesday the boys' dorm was hit with a sneak attack. Without a word of explanation, P. W.'s were told to remove furniture from all the rooms that the authorities felt we did not need. After they had the furniture neatly arranged in the boys' hall their leader made the rounds crying his words of wisdom.... When he was finally challenged by one of the students and asked why this action was taking place, he said: "Each room must have an equal amount of furniture." Therefore we are to assume that a room with one student in it must have two desks, two desk chairs and a large reading chair, whereas some rooms are lucky to have one desk between two or three students. I have recently received a phone call from the editor of THE BAGPIPE asking me for an interview for our school paper. When I told her I felt the telephone was not the place to hold student interviews she became quite violent in her tone of voice. She said there was not any way in which we could meet because at that time I was on restriction. She claimed such a meeting would be dishonest. Is it dishonest to express yourself openly? In the past two days I have discovered it is a sin to do so. I have been asked if I plan to start another student newspaper. All I can say at this time is, "If we need one we shall have one," Raymond W. Powers

Note: The above letter has been printed in this week's BAGPIPE despite the fact that it was submitted six hours after the deadline for such submissions. Reason? I did not have the heart to add to this fellow's (or his friends') obviour persecution complex. Violently yours, The Editor * * * THEY CAME THIS WEEK... FIND THEM IN THE TUCK SHOPPE J.B. (Play about JOB with a strange twisted modern approach) by HacLeish HISTORY BOOKS Europe Western Civilization Since 1500 Middle Ages Who Moved the Stone? Frank Morison - The author of this book, a doctor, set out to write a book disproving the truth of tihe historical fact of the resurrection. However, the more research he made the more he became convinced that he was wrong and to follow his conscience and his new belief, he had to write a book of a different nature: one that demonstrated the evidence for the resurrection. A very worthwhile book every Christian should read# Also...you will be glad to see some new Hallmark cards of a serious nature. *informal fallacy: ad homincm circumstantial - but very effective in advertising. THE BAGPIPE, weekly student publication of Covenant College Lookout fountain, Tennessee. Editor, Linda Cole; News Editor John Barnes; Feature Editors: Audrey Sneller and Daniele Mozes; Typists: June Stein and Frances Bragdon
