3 NEW DIRECTOR OF NATIVE AMERICAN MINISTRIES NAMED A RENEWED MISSION WITH OUR FIRST PEOPLE BY THE RT REV KIRK S. SMITH BISHOP OF ARIZONA Here are some important census statistics for Arizonans to know: Arizona has the third largest population of Native Americans in the country and is home to the second largest tribe (Navajo) for a total of 5.6% of our total state population. The Native population of the U.S. has grown at much faster rate than that of the country as a whole (27% compared to 9.7% in the last ten years). The vast majority of Native people live away from tribal areas (78%), mostly in large cities. Phoenix has the third largest population of Native people in the country (44,000). The Episcopal Diocese in Arizona has, in the past, been very involved in ministry to Native people, especially the Navajo. As a result of actions of the Federal government in the late 19th Century, the Episcopal Church was assigned the Navajo reservation as a mission field. Episcopalians from all over the country contributed to this missionary work, and funded schools and hospitals, including at Good Shepherd Mission near Fort Defiance. Even after the Navajo Episcopalians gained their own autonomy and bishop with the creation of the Navajoland Area Mission in 1987, congregations in Arizona continued to support work on the reservation with building projects, informational tours, and food and clothing drives. The Northeast Region Parish project was behind much of these efforts, while the Diocese supported youth missioner Kaze Gadway (now retired) and her work with the Spirit Journey Youth. In spite of continuing good energy from the Native American Program group, I feel that our involvement with Native folks (not just the Navajo tribe) has fallen off in recent years. One reason for this is that, as the above statistics show, much attention was directed towards the reservations, when in fact, most of our Native population now lives in our cities. I believe that just as we have a diocesan person responsible for Hispanic ministry (Fr. Martir Vasquez), we also need a skilled Native person to help us better ministry to that population. We have few Episcopalians who are Natives. However, with this group making up such a significant part of our population and culture, I believe have a moral obligation to do a better job of reaching out to them. Therefore, I have asked The Rev. Debbie Royals, who is one of our resident priests and a member of the Pascua Yaqui tribe in Tucson, to take on the role of Director of Native Ministries, effective this month. Like the Director of Hispanic Ministry, this will be a part-time position funded through your Mission Share giving. Debbie is well-known in our Diocese and throughout the country for her work with Native peoples. She will bring with her the expertise and energy needed to help revitalize this important work of our diocese. Learn more about Debbie in the article on page 3. We have much to learn from our Native brothers and sisters about spirituality and care for the earth, and I ask all Arizona Episcopalians to support this important partnership. SIGN UP Bishop Smith s E-pistle is sent out weekly to subscribers. Please contact Nicole Krug at nicole@azdiocese.org if you would like to receive it. Bishop Smith has asked The Rev. Debbie Royals to join the diocesan staff as the new, part-time Director of Native American Ministries, effective January 1, Debbie is Pascua Yaqui from Tucson, where she cares for her 92 year old mother and enjoys the proximity of her family with two sons NEW CHURCH PLANTS RECOGNIZED At the Annual Convention, two new church plants were officially recognized. Please join us in welcoming them to the Diocese! The people of Emmaus Episcopal Church are dedicated to creating a lasting, self-sufficient, multigenerational Episcopal parish in Surprise, Arizona. Find out more about Emmaus on their website at: or on Facebook at: and two grandchildren. She serves as a physical health faculty member for the CPG Wellness and Education program-credo and has been serving as a consultant of the Indigenous Theological Training Institute. She has published several theological journals for ITTI and has published in several other books including as a regular for the Forward Movement daily reflections. Debbie s ministry in Arizona has included parish ministry with a particular growth in Native American Ministry using a model she has developed for successful ministry in an urban setting. Debbie is completing her second term on the Standing Commission on Mission and Evangelism for which she is currently the chair. She received her education from the University of Arizona College of Nursing, a specialized degree from Prescott College and advanced degrees from Church Divinity School of the Pacific and the Graduate Theological Union. The information will also be sent to all congregations. MANY RESOURCES TO BE OFFERED AT THIS YEAR S LAY LEADERSHIP RETREAT BY NICOLE KRUG CANON FOR MEDIA & COMMUNICATIONS Whether you ve just been elected to the Vestry or Bishop s Committee, or this is the last year of your term, make plans to come to the Lay Leadership Retreat from March 6-8 at Chapel Rock in Prescott! This year s keynote speaker will be Mary M. MacGregor, Canon of Evangelism and Congregational Development for the Episcopal Diocese of Texas. She works closely with bishops, diocesan staff and congregational coaches to assist churches and their clergy with developmental challenges and opportunities. A particular focus of this work is with vestries, lay leaders and search committees. Mary also is responsible for training and a number of ongoing formation opportunities for clergy. She has served in this capacity for 11 years and has been an active lay leader in her diocese for over 30 years. Mary has a particular passion for serving the laity. She is renowned for being an engaging and popular speaker, having been invited to address conferences, retreats and conventions in over 30 Episcopal dioceses and at General Convention. She is a graduate of Louisiana State University and holds a Master s Degree in Education. In addition to the plenary sessions that Mary will lead, other presenters will offer separate tracks for Wardens, Vestry Members/Bishop s Committees, Clerks, and Treasurers. It doesn t matter if you are a lay leader veteran or new to a leadership role; there will be something for everyone. Previous attendees have come away with valuable information that they have immediately put to use in their congregations, as well as having had the opportunity to network with others in similar positions. This is the not to be missed event for those in leadership roles in their churches! Since it was so well-received last year, the entire Diocesan staff will again be on hand to lead workshops, be available for questions, and offer their expertise to attendees. FRIDAY, MARCH 6 Registration, Dinner, First Plenary Session, and Social Time SATURDAY, MARCH 7 Morning Prayer, Plenary Sessions and Workshops, Chapel Rock Tour, Networking SUNDAY, MARCH 8 Breakfast, Plenary Session, Closing Eucharist The Diocese has worked with Chapel Rock to keep costs as low as possible, and scholarships will be available. Registrations will be filled on a first come, first served basis. Here s what last year s attendees had to say: It s a wonderful opportunity to network with the Diocese, to learn the tools of great lay leadership, and to hear a great guest speaker. I would highly recommend this retreat for all new vestry and officers and I believe that repeat attendance is also very useful as the content varies from year to year. There is a lot of life and energy in the Diocese of Arizona. God is up to something! It was so informative and it is important that we all get to know each other and share our thoughts, ideas, frustrations and joys. MARCH 14, 2014 James Finley A One-Day Retreat ENTERING THE MIND OF CHRIST: LEARNING TO LIVE A MORE CONTEMPLATIVE WAY OF LIFE In this unique one-day retreat, worldrenowned author, retreat leader, and Merton Scholar Dr. James Finley will help us discover how we can enter the Mind of Christ, and abide in a daily loving awareness of God s presence within ourselves, and in everyone and everything around us. An emphasis will be given to practical guidelines in the practice of meditation and prayer as a way of grounding our daily lives in God s presence. The retreat is intended for both the sincere beginner and for those who are experienced in contemplative prayer and meditation. saintbarnabas.org/contacts/reservations HOSTED BY Saint Barnabas on the Desert 6715 N Mockingbird Lane Scottsdale, AZ REGISTER ONLINE TODAY INQUIRIES? 6 A CALL TO YOUTH AND YOUNG ADULT MINISTRY A year ago, I remember receiving my first dish of Quwarmah Ala Dajaj. It s an Iraqi chicken curry dish. I ate this meal in a studio the size of the office I now work in. I lived in a low-income complex down the street from the university I was attending. My neighbors were families from 23 different countries around the world, most of whom spoke little to no English and needed help navigating daily life in America. I share this because it is a personal reminder that when God calls you to something, YOU SAY YES. I spent my senior year of my undergraduate degree implementing programs for the youth and children of a refugee community. I never thought I would be willing to give up my comfort and security and take a leap of faith in the spirit of serving others. However, much like the ARIZONA EPISCOPALIAN BY JANA SUNDIN DIRECTOR OF CHILDREN S MINISTRIES disciples dropped their nets when they were called to follow his lead, I too, dropped mine. BY JESSE VILLEGAS, JR. DIRECTOR OF YOUTH AND YOUNG ADULT MINISTRIES 10 THE JOY AND CARE OF CHILDREN A year removed from eating that meal prepared by my Iraqi neighbor, I heard God calling me to something else. That something else is now my new service, as the new Youth and Young Adult Director. I am excited, humbled, and anticipate serving our churches here in Arizona. As 2014 is coming to an end, and as we prepare for the New Year, I would like to say that I have been praying for all the churches and their youth. Please be looking for great resources and events to come from the diocese soon. In addition, Chapel Rock s worldclass Episcopal Summer Camp will here in no time, with great programs for all youth and young adults, including the newest program that I have started called L.E.A.D. a curriculum that equips young adults azdiocese.org with leadership skills and knowledge of scripture that they can utilize back home in the areas of school, work, and ministry. This program will challenge students to explore their faith on a deeper level and move toward leading others. Sign up soon and come have the greatest summer of your life with great friends and amazing leaders! Sign up for camp 2015 online today! $20 Off if you register before March It has been about six months since I took my place as the diocesan Director of Children s Ministries. I had a few weeks to follow Canon Nancy Shumaker, my predecessor, around, asking zillions of questions, and then very quickly I was on my own. This time has flown by, and yet much has happened already. I have visited 28 churches and schools so far, either on Sundays or mid-week, and have seen and heard a variety of ideas, programs, and approaches to children s faith formation. I ve visited Vacation Bible Schools that had 40 children and Vacation Bible Schools that had 6 children. I ve been to Sunday Schools that had 1 child and Sunday Schools that had 25 children. I ve had energetic and fruitful conversations with clergy and children s ministers about supporting parents in the holy work they do at home. It has been a great joy to witness that, regardless of the size of the parish or mission, the average membership age, or number of children in attendance on Sunday, there is a widespread commitment to providing formation opportunities for children and their families. People throughout the diocese are mindful of the fact that children are full participants in our life of faith together, and that their care and nurture must be attended to. Many people also recognize the ways life with children enhances our own faith formation as adults. I m still pondering some unique and beautiful truths I heard from children at camp in June. For example, when the question about who lives in our hearts was asked and answered, one five-year-old girl added, Jesus has furniture in our hearts. Thanks to this young teacher, I ve wondered many times since then about what the furniture of my own heart is like, and whether it lends itself to hospitality toward Jesus. This year will bring many more experiences for me to share with you all. I m working on a resource library of children s ministries-related materials that will be available for anyone in the diocese to access. We ll begin offering group gatherings for parents to reflect together on how their parenting prepares their children for a life of faith. And I have a team of gifted storytellers, artists, children s ministers, and Chapel Rock enthusiasts working diligently to prepare for a wonderful Summer Camp. Visit to register your children early and get $20 off tuition before March 31. As always, every child who wants to go to camp can attend regardless of ability to pay. I have enjoyed meeting so many of you already, and if I haven t met you yet, I look forward to doing so soon and hearing how your congregation embraces the joy and care of children! azdiocese.org WINTER

7 C am p 2015 Summer Chapel Rock Prescott, AZ Early Bird Savings $20 Off If You Register Before March 31 sign up today FINANCIAL NEW YEAR RESOLUTIONS TO CONSIDER It is a New Year! Take a little time out to consider what you want to accomplish this year. The financial decisions, both good and perhaps not so good, made in the past will no doubt play an important role in your goals. Here are a few tips and tools from your credit union United Methodist Federal Credit Union (UMFCU) providing products and services to Episcopal Federal Credit Union: Make/Stick to a Budget! Actually write it down and make a commitment to review how you are doing at least monthly; weekly would be better. Know where your money is being spent and make adjustments accordingly. Don t spend more than you bring in! Need help with understanding and preparing a budget? Contact us about financial education classes or visit our website for tools. Save More Money! Be specific. Save for an emergency fund. Invest more in your investments account or 401K. Save for that new laptop, 55 screen TV, vacation, Christmas gifts by opening a special savings account. Curb compulsive spending by keeping a 30-day list. When you see something you want, add it to the list. If in 30 days, you still want that item or service, and you have the money saved, go ahead and purchase it. Purchasing these items on credit may make them much more expensive due the interest you will pay. Pay Off Debt! This can be in the form of credit cards, student loans, car loans, or mortgages. The average American carries close to $7,000 in credit card debt and the average interest rate may run in the midteens to 20 s at any given time. If you are among this group, make a commitment to pay off your debt. You already know that the money you spend on interest is simply wasted, and that some sacrifice will be required to become debt-free. However, what you may not realize is that this sacrifice is only temporary. UMFCU VISA offers lower than average interest rates and no annual fee. Free balance transfers make it advantageous to transfer balances from high interest credit cards to a UMFCU VISA. Review the interest rates on auto, personal, HELOC and Mortgage loans as well. UMFCU offers great low rates to save you money. Review your monthly bills and cut back wherever you can. Simple rule is to make sure you never charge more than you can afford to pay off at the end of the month. there and to get them eliminated or lowered. See if you can renegotiate your cell phone plan and TV channel package. Ask for loyalty discounts. Start an Emergency Fund! An emergency fund is a must-have in today s economic world where the unexpected can derail your finances if you are not prepared. Cut back on personal spending and build up a fund with at least six months worth of living expenses. This will financially prepare you, should you experience unemployment or a different setback. Use a special savings account to keep the Emergency Fund separate from other accounts. Improve Your Health! A healthier lifestyle means fewer medical bills. Plus, the better you feel, the easier it is for you to keep working or enjoy your retirement. If it s eating less, eating healthier, exercising, or all of the above, start making simple plans to improve your health. Final Thoughts! Setting financial resolutions for 2015 is a great idea but it will be an exercise in futility if you don t map out a plan. Write your resolutions down and set 30, 60, and 90 day goals to ensure you stay on track. United Methodist FCU also providing products and services to Episcopal FCU is here to help. Ask us how! Reduce Monthly Bills! Review your billing statements for fees you did not know you were paying. Contact the provider to find out why they are DESERT SW BRANCH: HEADQUARTERS: azdiocese.org WINTER
