SMITH BISHOP OF ARIZONA I doubt very much that I will need to encourage anyone to come to Convention this year. No one will want to miss out on the excitement of electing a new bishop! Yes, we will need to spend some time on the annual business of the diocese. There are still reports to be made, Resolutions to consider, and budgets to pass. However, most of the attention will be on the balloting, which will take place on Saturday morning October 20th, right after the Eucharist. As you probably know, I have nothing to do with the process leading up to the election. I will find out who the finalists are at the same time everyone else does. My only official function at the election is to chair the voting process and then call the winner and ask if he or she will accept the call to become the VI Bishop of Arizona. It would be easy in the next few months to get all involved in church politics and forget what is really going on here. Yes, the church is democratic, but not in the same way that our country is. We really do believe that the Holy Spirit is at work in an election like this. We believe in the vox populi, vox dei in the fullest sense. The winner is not just the person who manages to appeal to the widest number of self interest groups, but is rather the one who God has chosen, through the election process, who is best suited to guide the church. Moreover, the election of a new bishop is also not about personalities. It is about the continuity of the church, or what is better termed the apostolicity of the church. Did you know that the episcopacy is the oldest form of governance in the world? Before there were presidents, prime ministers, or even kings, there were bishops. We Americans pride outsides on the fact that every four or eight years, we have a peaceful transfer of power, but that has been going on in the church for almost two thousand years! You all should be proud of being part of this process. Even if you are not a delegate to Diocesan Convention, you will still have a chance to participate. The final candidates will be announced in July, and there will be biographies posted online. Then, in the end of September, there will be walkabouts, in which you may meet and ask questions of the candidates in one of a few different venues. If you like what you see, or don t like what you see, speak to your clergy and elected delegates and make your opinions known! Thanks to digital technology, all election results at the Diocesan Convention will be available in real time to everyone (even if you aren t attending in person). This is the last time I get to issue a call to Convention. I do so with mixed feelings. I am looking forward to new adventures in retirement, but I will also profoundly miss the relationships, which have sustained me as your bishop for almost 15 years. So please continue to pray for this transition process, especially for the Search Committee, Transition Committee, and Standing Committee as they do their important work. May God continue to guide us as the people of God in Arizona. SIGN UP Bishop Smith s E-pistle is sent out weekly to subscribers. GENERAL CONVENTION DEPUTIES HEAD TO AUSTIN The General Convention of The Episcopal Church gathers every three years in different locations. The 2018 meeting will convene in Austin, Texas for a nine-day legislative session (July 5-13, 2018), and will be the 79th General Convention of the Church. A group of elected clergy and lay, as well as a few diocesan staff, will represent the Diocese of Arizona at this event (listed below). To help explain the significance of this event, here are a few FAQs: What is the General Convention? The General Convention is the governing body of The Episcopal Church. It is a bi,cameral legislature that includes the House of Deputies, with clergy and lay deputies elected from the 109 dioceses, at more than 800 members (up to four clergy and four lay persons from each diocese); and the House of Bishops, with upwards of 200 active and retired bishops. The work of General Convention includes adopting legislation of concern to the Church; amending the Book of Common Prayer, the Constitution, and the Canons of the Church; adopting a triennial budget for The Episcopal Church; and electing candidates to offices, boards and other committees. This work in undertaken in support of the mission and ministry of the Church, and with prayerful gratitude and spiritual discernment. What happens at General Convention? While the principal work of the General Convention is conducted in its legislative processes, General Convention is also filled with activities and opportunities for mission and ministry gatherings. The calendar highlights a number of these, including worship, an evening sponsored by the hosting Diocese, and opportunities for seminary and other meetings. For more than a century, the Triennial Meeting of the Episcopal Church Women (ECW) has been held at the same time and place as the General Convention. The National Altar Guild Association (NAGA) Triennial meeting will also be held concurrently. This small sampling of activities shows why some have described General Convention as having elements of a family reunion. Who is attending from the Diocese of Arizona? Four clergy and four lay people were elected at our diocesan Annual Convention in 2016 to attend as deputies. The clergy are: The Very Rev. Troy Mendez, The Rev. Ann Johnson, The Rev. Canon John Kitagawa, The Rev. Stephen Keplinger The lay people are: Dawn Conley, Canon Judith Conley, Ariana Gonzalez-Bonillas, Clyde Kunz The alternates are: The Rev. Ernest Galaz, The Rev. Julie O Brien, Julia Coleman (Alternates were elected and will also attend, in case of illness or other emergency that would prevent a deputy from being present.) The diocesan staff attending are: Bishop Kirk Smith, Canon Cathy Black, Canon Nicole Krug, The Rev. Canon Megan Traquair Where can I find info about what s happening at General Convention? Visit the General Convention website at: generalconvention.org, and watch for posts on the diocesan Facebook page at: azdiocese, and the diocesan Twitter profile: twitter.com/azdiocese, as well as the weekly E-pistle e-newsletter. BISHOP SEARCH UPDATE BY THE REV. CANON DANIEL TANTI- MONACO, PRESIDENT, STANDING COMMITTEE Through a process of prayerful discernment, evaluation and discussion, the Bishop Search Committee has completed its review of all written applications and conducted video-conference interviews with qualified candidates. A group of several candidates are now considered semi-finalists and will participate in individual interviews with the Committee. Following that process, a slate of three to five candidates will be submitted to the Diocesan Standing Committee, and the announcement of the slate will happen on July 6. Petition applications will be accepted from July 6 at 6:00 p.m. through July 20 at 5:00 p.m. (AZ time). Candidate walkabouts will occur across the diocese during the last week of September. The locations will be announced. Please continue to pray for those involved in this process. 10 ARIZONA EPISCOPALIAN azdiocese.org azdiocese.org SUMMER

7 CHAPLAINS, LIKE DISCIPLES, PROVIDE ASSISTANCE TO THOSE IN NEED BY DIOCESAN COLLEGE CHAPLAINS It s dangerous to go alone! Take this, so said the wise elder upon handing young Link a sword to assist him on his journeys across the fantasy world of Hyrule. The console video game Zelda was released on August 22, 1987, 13 years before our incoming first-year college students were born. Still, three decades later, that adage of the elder remains true. It is dangerous to go alone, and so the Episcopal Diocese of Arizona supports Young Adult and Campus Ministries to assist youth as they take up their journeys into adulthood. Our chaplaincies serve college students and young adults in the Phoenix area, Tucson, and Flagstaff, with chaplains based at Arizona State University (Downtown, Tempe, and Polytechnic campuses), the University of Arizona, and Northern Arizona University. We also welcome students from the numerous community colleges across the state. Each of our four chaplaincies works in a way unique to its setting, finding partners with both secular and religious groups on campus and in the community. Our ministry in Flagstaff, serving Northern Arizona University, stands out specifically in that it is a shared ministry model between our Diocese and the Grand Canyon Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, with whom we are called to common mission. This relationship has grown out of the commonalities and similarities between our churches as we serve the campus together. Our ministry in Tempe, serving Arizona State University s Main Campus, is fully embedded within a parish church community. The chaplaincy at the University of Arizona is part of a collaborative building with Lutheran, Presbyterian, and Methodist partners. Through ecumenical agreements and intergenerational arrangements such as these, our chaplaincies continue to learn how much stronger we are when we are united in our mission to serve Christ throughout the world. While strategies may differ between chaplaincies, the core of our work remains the same: pastoral care and religious formation of young adults. There are college trials older adults often romanticize: moving into the college dorm, the first really difficult class, forging new friendships, and even falling in love events where students need a listening ear and helpful guide. Alongside these wellknown tribulations, many college students now struggle with housing insecurity and food poverty, worry not only about passing classes but affording them, and encounter growing levels of isolation and hopelessness. Our diocese is committed to ensuring that young adults have assistance navigating these hurdles and discovering how in the midst of a tumultuous existence, Jesus can be a sure rock and foundation. Even amid the hopeful Christian community, still alive with the spiritual power of Pentecost, we find them wrestling with the Group photo from Province VIII Young Adult Retreat in Tucson in April pragmatic issues of those in need. As the Apostles worked to provide for the widows and orphans in their midst, our chaplaincies maintain pantries with food and hygiene items for students in need. We may be the only resource a student has to turn to when they need a new pair of shoes to get around campus or a solid outfit for that first major job interview. Chaplaincies work with students through medical and mental health crisis, transporting them to appointments, covering prescription copays, discerning with them if it may be time to go to inpatient care for their mental health needs. Like the early Christians in Acts, we also find ourselves striving to express the Gospel amidst new contexts and new ways of relaying information. What did it mean for the early Christians to move away from the immaculately reproduced scrolls of the Hebrew Scriptures and move towards hastily copied transcriptions of Paul s most recent letter, or a compilation of the sayings and acts of Jesus, across the ancient Mediterranean world? What does it mean now for Episcopalians to engage a generation that thrives on digital technologies, holds more advanced degrees than any in history, and is both seeking sources of authority to respect while also being highly suspicious of any who claim to have authority? These are the quandaries, and blessings, provided to our four chaplaincies. Ours is a ministry of consistent church planting, gathering a seed congregation together every three or so years, watching it grow, blossom, and bear fruit, then to repeat the process. Where parishes can expect to have aspects of their ministry be perennial in nature, the citrus tree bearing fruit year after year for decades, campus ministries must consistently plant again knowing that a program that thrived one semester might never come together in a workable fashion again; the vegetables that thrived in the garden one season might not have the right conditions to grow in the next. The consistency that undergirds our work comes from our Chaplains, the rhythm of the academic year, and two yearly retreats. Each Veterans Day weekend, the Chaplains gather young adults from across the Diocese at Chapel Rock in Prescott for a retreat where we pray the daily Chaplain Ben Garren (center) hands out bulletins at the Province VIII Young Adult Retreat office, hold forums on pressing issues, and give participants a chance to be formed in the Anglican Tradition. In the spring, we take up a similar retreat, but gather with the young adult ministries from across Province VIII. This year s retreat was held at Grace St. Paul s in Tucson and participants had a chance to engage the intersection of spirituality and art as they toured museums, were led to create pottery by Pascua Yaqui artists, and explored how spoken word poetry has emboldened the Black Lives Matter movement. Beginning again in the fall, our chaplaincies will host regular opportunities for worship in the Anglican Tradition that values our students from across the Anglican Communion. We will have fellowship events, game nights, and deep discussions about theology and life. We will host meals, pantries, and meal prep events to ensure that students are fed. We will provide what is often one of the few safe harbors on campus for women and LGBTQ+ individuals to fully discern a life with Christ where they have access to all the sacraments. As we go about our work, we hope to be collaborative with area parishes. We are diocesan ministries and part of our work is to support your community s ministry with young adults, to assist you in understanding new dynamics of Proclaiming Christ Crucified amidst a quickly changing world, and ensure that the transition from youth to adult happens with the longing to be part of God s community intact. Reach out to us in the weeks ahead as you are planning your events for next year and see how we can assist you with adult education or a special youth event. If you or your church feel called, we are always looking for support to provide scholarships to our two retreats each year, which our participants often name as life changing events in their lives of faith and service. To connect your rising seniors to a young adult and campus ministry, or to connect with us directly, you can find us at You may also contact Brad Eubanks, our Chaplain in Flagstaff and the Coordinator for Young Adult and Campus Ministry for Province VIII at brad.eubanks+ecm@gmail.com or Brad can facilitate a connection to any young adult and campus ministry in the Episcopal Church. 8 AN EVENT SUPPORTED BY St. James the Apostle Tempe, AZ wonderful staff, Chapel Rock has continued to grow into a truly beautiful jewel of the Diocese. As a member of the diocesan staff, I have been privileged to be a part of several retreats for the Lay Staff and Lay Leaders of the Diocese, and I will always treasure the experiences that have brought me closer to God and the true meaning of serving the people of the Diocese of Arizona. FIND MORE INFORMATION REGARDING CHAPEL ROCK AND HOW TO HELP WITH CAMPERSHIPS AT THE CAMP WEBSITE: A gathering at Chapel Rock camp in the 1930s TIBITS FROM THE ARCHIVES BY SHARON GRAVES, DIOCESAN ARCHIVIST Our rock may not be a diamond but it is precious to the Diocese. As I was searching for something interesting for this issue, I stumbled upon What s Happening at Chapel Rock? Summer Newsletter for It had a wonderful short history of Chapel Rock, which has been reproduced below. The historical information was provided by The Rev. Canon Norman Burke. A Rich Tradition ~ An On-Going Legacy Chapel Rock, the Arizona Church Conference Center in the heart of mile-high Prescott, possesses a legacy of healing and rehabilitation from the early part of this century. The property was originally owned by Dr. Albert D. Wilson, an Episcopalian who developed a tuberculosis sanitarium. By the late 1920s the tuberculosis epidemic had ended and the need for a sanitarium declined. The property was put up for sale, and Bishop Walter Mitchell initiated plans to acquire it. The Episcopal Church in the Missionary District of Arizona purchased the 19 acres for $13, in Not only was it declared Bishop Mitchell s official summer residence, it was also made available as a camping site for clergy and young Episcopalians who attended Camp Mitchell for boys and Camp Cady for girls. Bishop Mitchell had a larger vision. He saw the center being used by churches of all denominations and so he named it the Arizona Church Conference Center. Since those early years, the center has forged a sense of cooperation and understanding among the groups that have gathered here. For decades, it has been a place for inspiration, education and enrichment for children as well as adults. Thanks to the generosity of those who felt blessed by their own retreat and camp experiences, the conference center has continued to grow in facilities and opportunities. Summer programs for young people remain the keystone for Chapel Rock s camping curriculum. The 60 s More or Less Session has demonstrated consistently the center s commitment to adult programming. For generations, Chapel Rock has been a place where people have come to experience unique encounters with a loving God. We hope you will take part in a Chapel Rock Adventure. 9 DEACON BEACON BY THE REV. SALLY DURAND This monthly feature in the E-pistle e-newsletter highlights one of our deacons and their ministry. THE REV. LINDA HALE The Rev. Linda Hale serves at Christ the King in Tucson. As a child, I dreamed of someday living in a library. Books were my teachers, mentors, companions. They took my out of myself for a time. Now, as an adult I do live in. Library- -sort of. The many, many books in my collection still teach, mentor, companion and take me out of myself for a time. The subject matters of this collection represent an ordinary life with bits if the extraordinary. They range from a collection of old schoolbooks and recipe books from my grandmother s time to poetry by Whitman, Burns and Mary Oliver, and a collection gathered from travels, primarily in Spain where I spent time at two Universities learning Spanish language, history and art. A large part of this library has to do with religion, church history, theology and all the other volumes one uses in formation for ministry, but the largest part of my collection of works dealing with faith God, with following the Way of Christ, with spiritual growth. These collections speak to my several callings. I love to cook, to feed people. In my professional life, I was a teacher, and for 35 years I responded to that call. Truly, that call to teach is with me still, and as a deacon, I continue to teach and to lead Bible studies, book studies and special programs. I love to preach and occasionally have the opportunity to do so. As the Diocesan representative for Episcopal Relief and Development (ERD), I have even more opportunity to speak, bringing to the fore the intent of Matthew 25:35-45:...I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, a stranger and you took me in, naked and you gave me clothing, sick or in prison and you visited me... This ministry of ERD has followed me from the Diocese of Spokane (in Washington State) to the Diocese of Arizona. Soon after I arrived in Tucson and became licensed to serve as Deacon, I became the Diocesan chaplain for Daughters of the King. It has been my responsibility and pleasure to arrange the chapel for Convention each year, in which all are welcome to come for prayer or some quiet time. You all are surely invited! My library also contains several columns and magazines dealing with art in various forms, especially the connections between art and expressions of faith. Stained glass, beautiful vestments, wonderful, soaring architecture come to mind. My own contribution is the act of weaving. The setting of a strong warp and the interlacement of a patterned weft make a piece of whole cloth much like the strong basis for a Christian life woven with the daily living of that life--it s pattern make the whole cloth of a person s life. THE REV. BECKY WILLIAMSON The Rev. Rebecca (Becky) Williamson serves at St. Augustine s (Tempe). There are many deacons in all parts of our diocese. Some of them may be aware and others may not have a clue -- yet, regarding their ministry. I was in the latter category for many years. I have been a teacher, coach, counselor, social worker, Hospice Chaplain, and Spiritual Director during my work life. All of these positions helped to formulate some concept of ministry through the 30 years before my ordination. I kept feeling a call to something and had this call reflected to me by others, like my friends and priests, Kathleen Galvin and Gil Stafford. I considered everything other than ordained ministry -- a new job, a Ph.D., anything else. The priesthood was not it either, although that was the only pathway known to me for many years. Nothing seemed to satisfy a desire that was in me but which still did not have a voice. Working in the Maricopa County Jail system as a Mental Health Counselor was a time when an idea of my ministry began to take shape. I became aware of a few deacons in our diocese, although none ministered close by. The desire just would not be quiet, so I pursued something I was unable to define fully, but faith carried me through the ambiguity. At least for a social worker, I finally was making good money at a Long Term Care facility. My partner was retired and we were living in our dream home. This was not the time to make waves, but there it was. My pathway was revealed, and in spite of everything else, it made sense to me. My partner s faith allowed her to trust it, too. It was funny that the obvious decision came when it did. In 2010, I began attending Spiritual Direction School. During the two years that followed and continuing through my Deacon Formation and Clinical Pastoral Education, I learned the gift of Holy Listening. Finally, on January 29, 2011, I was ordained to the diaconate at Trinity Cathedral. I have never looked back, and I thank God for the clarity of this ministry in the last decade. Happily for me, as someone who embraces change, the last 10 years of my life never have been the same year-to-year, and the understanding of my ministry has constantly evolved. Some elements of my ministry are: leading a Contemplative Prayer group at St. Augustine s, and working with the elderly. Contemplative Prayer has always centered me deep within my soul. I find that this type of prayer, which you would think of as the most solitary kind of experience -- after all, you re silent -- becomes, to me, more powerful with a group of people than when I do it by myself. I don t know why, but it underscores community as utterly central to the process. Working with the elderly has been my ministry almost from childhood. Some of my best friends are elderly and I am drawn to them like a magnet. I love listening to their stories about their lives with the realization that they have the same worries and concerns that affect all of us. Over the years, I believe I have felt freer to respond to gentle nudges by the Holy Spirit. My paid vocation (by then in Hospice Chaplaincy), has informed and become a unified part of my diaconal ministry. Now that I am retired from the vocational world of work, I am thankful (almost) every day that I am allowed to serve as a deacon in God s mission in the world. 16 ARIZONA EPISCOPALIAN azdiocese.org azdiocese.org SUMMER

10 with a reception from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. and feature guest speakers. St. Peter s in Litchfield Park will host a screening of the Oscar-nominated documentary Knife Skills on Wednesday, September 14th from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. This documentary follows the releasees as they are trained as chefs in a gourmet French restaurant that only employs ex-inmates. The Diocesan Prison Ministry Program offers speakers, programs, and suggestions for discussing and addressing the multiple burdens communities bear regarding incarceration and re-entry. Contact me to arrange a presentation at your church or find out more about what is available. In addition, check out this list of suggestions found on the Diocesan Prison Ministry website: (contact information is also on the website). These suggestions can be adopted by any church denomination and by concerned individuals throughout the U.S. Raising awareness and encouraging community involvement are the first steps toward making a positive impact on successful re-entry for those who are released and providing assistance for families and others who are struggling with the financial and emotional burdens of incarceration. Taking the words of Jesus from Matthew 25:36, I was in prison, and you visited me as a call to action, Episcopal churches throughout Arizona are encouraged to place a special emphasis during the month of September on the impact incarceration is having on their community and on their own church members. NEW DIRECTOR OF FINANCE HIRED INCARCERATION AFFECTS EVERYONE PRISON AWARENESS MONTH RETURNS TO DIOCESE OF ARIZONA IN SEPTEMBER BY THE REV. KIM CRECCA, CONVENER, DIOCESAN PRISON MINISTRY PROGRAM According to the U.S. Bureau of Justice Statistics, Arizona currently ranks fifth in a nation that incarcerates at a rate 5 to 10 times that of other industrialized nations. Those affected by incarceration include not only the individuals who are actually behind bars, but also family members struggling to make ends meet and living with the stigma of having a loved one that is serving or has served time in prison or jail. The children of incarcerated parents are especially traumatized and often feel that the loss of their parent/s is somehow their fault. In addition to the prisoner and their family, those who work for or volunteer in correctional facilities are affected by incarceration as well. No community is exempt from the far reaching, and often devastating, affects of incarceration. The month of September has been designated as Prison Awareness Month for the Diocese of Arizona and we would like to know what your church is doing to help raise awareness about the multiple social issues related to incarceration. Two events that are scheduled for the month include an art exhibit at All Saints in Phoenix featuring artwork from local inmates. The exhibit will open on September 1st We are happy to share the good news that Bill Potts began as the new Director of Finance in April! Bill comes to us from Washington, D.C. by way of Dallas, Texas. With his more than 30 years of ministry and service, Bill brings a wide variety of skills and experience to his position. He has a long faith journey beginning in a small town in Oklahoma at age 7, when he felt a call to ministry and service to the Lord through the church. Post high school, and after spending two years in business school studying Business Administration and Accounting, he completed his education at Central Bible College in Springfield, Missouri with a Bachelor s degree in Sacred Music. He has served in various pastoral roles as youth pastor, college and career pastor, children s pastor, singles pastor, and children s worker, while also assisting with the administrative side of church service. In the early 1990s, Bill began his work in full-time church administration and finance. He has maintained that role in several churches for the bulk of the past 24 years serving churches in the Episcopal Church, Presbyterian (USA) Church, and the United Methodist Church. Bill has a deep love for the Episcopal Church and is so excited to once again serve through this position. He is looking forward to working with the churches in the Diocese and serving each congregation as a resource. Bill can be reached at (602) or bill@azdiocese.org. Please help us welcome him to Dio House! 18 ARIZONA EPISCOPALIAN azdiocese.org azdiocese.org SUMMER
