2 Pastor's Report: Greetings, Heart. It is an interesting word. It is the name of the organ in our body that is crucial to life. It can also be used as a description. Meaning, a person may have heart. Over the course of this past month, I have been (and many of us have been) a witness to the word heart being used as a description of a person. We have had volunteers from Keller-Williams Realty in Nottingham show "heart". Meaning, these were volunteers who reached out to Christus Victor to help with the food pantry. They collected food at their office and brought the food to Victor s Vittles. Not only that, they purchased gift cards to grocery stores so that our clients can go make needed purchases. AND, if that was not enough, they volunteered to help us out with the spreading of the mulch. Those, of course, are not the only displays of "heart" that I have seen. I see "heart" shown by the members of Christus Victor in caring for one another, feeding the community, and all the work done by the volunteers in the ministries that go on at CVLC. This is the time of year when some of our ministries begin to take a break. So, I want to take this moment to say, thank you! Thank you all for the "heart" you display in your ministry. Thank you for all the hard work that you have done in doing God s work and what God calls us to do. 3 The President's Corner : A Tribute to D-Day (Sherry Simpkins) Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go. (Joshua 1:9) June 6 th marks the 74 th anniversary of the Allied forces storming the beaches of Normandy, France in order to liberate Western Europe from the grip of Nazi Germany. Hundreds of American soldiers lost their lives in a concerted and successful effort to stop pure evil. Betty and I had the opportunity to visit the American cemetery in Normandy. It was a profound experience for both of us. On the 40 th anniversary of D-Day, President Ronald Reagan gave an inspiring speech in Normandy dedicated to the men who fought and who gave their lives during the invasion. A portion of his speech is written below. For long years much of Europe had been in a terrible shadow. Free nations had fallen, Jews cried out in the camps, millions cried out for liberation. Europe was enslaved, and the world prayed for its rescue. Here in Normandy the rescue began The men of Normandy had faith that what they were doing was right, faith that they fought for all humanity, faith that a just God would grant them mercy on this beachhead or the next

4 The Americans who fought here that morning knew word of the invasion was spreading through the darkness back home in Georgia (people) were filling the churches at 4 a.m., in Kansas (people) were kneeling on their porches and praying, and in Philadelphia they were ringing the Liberty Bell. Something else helped the men of D-Day: the rock hard belief that God was an ally in this great cause. And so, the night before the invasion, when Colonel Wolverton asked his parachute troopers to kneel with him in prayer, he told them: Do not bow your heads, but look up so you can see God and ask His blessing in what we re about to do. These are the things that impelled them; these are the things that shaped the unity of the Allies. 6 CHRISTUS COMFORTERS The ladies who work on quilts for the homeless and folks who are in need of a touch of love work on the quilts both at home and on Tuesdays 9:30 to 12 noon. Over the last 18 years we have made more than 1500 quilts and shared them with many, many differing organizations. We are dwindling in numbers but not in energy. We spend hours at home sewing quilt tops and surging the edges. There are many involved in the construction of the quilts and over the next few months I will go into more details. We welcome anyone who would like to join us for this ministry and fellowship. If you sew, you can take squares home to complete. If you like designing and arranging squares, we will be happy to sew them together. We will be displaying our handiwork on pews in the near future and monthly we will keep you informed of what we are doing and which organizations to whom we have made donations. 8 A Father s Day Spotlight: by Cheryl Fidler My father, Richard James Howard Franz, was a quiet man. My dad was the best. He would do anything to help anyone. He always made sure that my brother and I had what we wanted. My dad was not a typical working man. He worked a fourday work week. His day off was Monday s. This was his day to do the grocery shopping, wash laundry, and cook dinner. My dad didn t like when schools were closed on Monday s. This meant that my brother and I would tag along with him to the grocery store. We always walked out of the store with more junk then he would have bought on his own. When the grandchildren came along, they were the apple of my dad s eye. They could do no wrong. My boys, Trevor and Jordan knew that whenever they saw Poppy, he would have Pokémon fruit snacks for each of them in his shirt pocket. My boys still talk about the fruit snacks from time to time. My father died March, That same month, he put down his loyal dog, Reff, and his last grandchild was born. My dad was truly a man of integrity.

9 A Father s Day Spotlight: by Terrie Falloni and Kathie Nichols We are honored to be asked to spotlight our father, Jim Umerley, this month as Father's Day is soon approaching. Our dad was born June 1, 1941 in a strict catholic German/ Polish house in Rosedale, MD. He had twin younger sisters, Helen and Mary. He grew up in Catholic schools until trouble got the best of him and he had to switch to Parkville High. He met and married Pat and was married for 35 years until she succumbed to cancer in Our dad worked hard and always provided for our family. After attending University of Baltimore, he joined the Air National Guard and worked as a firefighter. He bought 2 miniature golf courses "PUTT-PUTT" at Loch Raven & Taylor in Towson and Ordinance Road in Glen Burnie and ran them during the summer for 10 years. He then started his career in finance at GMAC for the next 15 years, then decided to change directions and open his own car rental/leasing agency. After many years of that and with us girls getting older, he came to us with an idea of starting our own family cleaning service. So, the 3 of us opened one of Baltimore's first cleaning service, Daisy Maids, and we had the privilege of working together for almost 15 years. In his spare time, our dad loved to hunt! He was able to travel all across the United States and Provinces in Canada such as Newfoundland, Québec, British Columbia, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Alberta to name a few. Kathie's favorite memory of her dad is sitting on his lap on Sunday mornings while he would read the newspaper funnies and use different character voices. Terrie's favorite memory is going to amusement parks and riding the roller coasters with him.

10 In 2009 he had to have open heart surgery and one year later he suffered a life changing stroke. He often says it is the best thing that has ever happened to him because that is when he really sought after the Lord and came to accept Jesus Christ as his Savior. Christus Victor came to be his saving grace and the people here have embraced him with open arms and we are very thankful for all of you. We are blessed to still have our father who continues to love life, love his family and most importantly trust in the Lord. We love you Dad!! Christus Victor Scholarship Application: Scholarship applications for the school year are now available. Applications will be available in the church office on the parish administrator s desk. The deadline for submitting the completed application is August 15 th. On the third Wednesday of every month, one of their trucks comes to Christus Victor to pick up any donations from the congregation. (clothing, toys, useable house wares, small appliances, baby items, holiday items, tools, dishes, etc.) Please leave any donations in the fellowship hall by the coat rack and label your items LMS. The next pickup date is June 20th.

11 Thought of the day: A FATHER is neither an anchor to hold us back, nor a sail to take us there, but a guiding light whose love shows us the way. The Smile Corner It's Game 7 of the NBA Finals, and a man makes his way to his seat at center court. He sits down and notices that the seat next to him is empty. He leans over and asks his neighbor if someone is sitting there. The man responds, "No, the seat's empty." The first man exclaims, "What?! Who in their right mind would have a seat like this for the NBA Finals and not use it?" The neighbor responds, "Well, the seat is mine, but my wife passed away and this is the first NBA Finals we haven't been together." "I'm sorry to hear that. Wasn't there anyone else, a friend or relative, that could've taken that seat?" "No, they're all at the funeral."
