1 March 2017 Trinity United Methodist Church Merchantville, NJ Pennsauken United Methodist Church Christian writer Kathleeen Norris tells the craziest story about the bible in her book, mazing Grace: Vocabulary of Faith. Norris recalls a conversation she and her husband once had in a local steak house with one of their South Dakota neighbors, a grandson of dirt-poor immigrants who now owned several thousand acres and bought new cars for his family every year; a man who had now begun treatment for a probably terminal cancer. That night this man of few words who usually spoke about business when he did speak, began telling about receiving a wedding gift, many years before, from his devout grandfather. Norris says: His wedding present to rlo and his bride had been a bible, which he admitted he admired mostly because it was an expensive gift, bound in white leather, with their names and the date of their wedding set in gold lettering on the cover. I left it in its box and it ended up in our bedroom closet, rlo told us. But, he said, for months afterward, every time we saw grandpa he would ask me how I liked that bible. The wife had written him a thank you note, and we d thanked him in person, but somehow he couldn t let it lie, he d always keep asking about it. Finally, rlo grew curious as to why the old man kept after him. Well, he said, the joke was on me. I finally took that Bible out of the closet and found that granddad had placed a twenty-dollar bill at the beginning of the Book of Genesis, and at the beginning of every book over thirteen hundred dollars in all. nd he knew I d never find it. This Lent I want to invite you to read the Bible, at Trinity. Each Wednesday evening we will begin with a light soup supper and then gather for the study. We will be examining the accounts in the Gospels and other places in the New Testament that tell about Jesus death and resurrection. 2 Message from the Finance Committee of Trinity I hope everyone has begun the New Year in good health and with great optimism for the year ahead. We, too, are optimistic about Trinity and all the good things that continue to take place here. s we began the New Year, however and began making financial projections for 2017, the Finance Committee determined that some efficiencies needed to be made in the operation of the church. These changes, which were made in conjunction with Trinity s Staff Parish elations Committee and approved by the church s dministrative Council at its last meeting, should not affect worship services or our ministries. However, I want to make sure everyone is aware of them. In particular, if you would like to reach Cindy in the church office, please be aware that she will now be working three days a week rather than four. She will be in the office from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays. lthough her days might be a little different, this is similar to the schedule she keeps in the summer months. We have also asked organist Helen Carrell and choir director Doc Maddison to coordinate their vacation schedules over the summer so that one or the other of them is at worship every Sunday. This relieves us of the need to retain, and pay for, substitute organists as Doc is able to play the piano. Finally, rather than retain a sexton devoted solely to the church, we have asked. Mr. Johnny, who works as both a janitor and assistant teacher for our child care center, to spend some time on Mondays and Fridays attending to cleaning the bathrooms and chapel area. Pastor Walt and Peter Johnston from our Board of Trustees will be pitching in to take care of other needs, and from time to time they may also be looking for some volunteer assistance. Thank you for your understanding and patience as we move forward with these changes. Sincerely, Cece Torok, Chair Finance Committee March 8, 15, 22, 29 & pril 5. at 6:30pm ll members of Trinity and Pennsauken UMC are invited to join Pastor Walt for Soup & Lenten Bible Study on Wednesday evenings at Trinity UMC. Sue Summers has done a wonderful job leading our adult Sunday School class but now that she is taking on other leadership roles in the church, Doc Maddison has offered to lead the discussions on Sunday mornings. When I'm setting up for fellowship or communion and I hear the discussions going on in the classroom, it's obvious that they are enjoying themselves. Thank you Sue, for your years of service and thank you Doc for adding this job to your resume. I want to thank Michael Hall for his years of service taking care of the church building. I always appreciated his help decorating the sanctuary for the holidays. If you find you have some free time, I'm sure Cindy could use a hand folding our Sunday bulletins and/or preparing our newsletter. With her shortened schedule, we need to be sure she has the time to get everything done. Cindy, please let us know when you need an extra hand and again, thank you for always going above and beyond. You truly are a blessing to this church! Thank you again to all who participate in the service by serving as Greeters, Worship Leaders, running the slide show and sound system, and helping with snacks and clean up for our fellowship time. In the US, we waste 30-40% of our food supply. ccording to the USD about 90 billion pounds of food go uneaten each year. What can you do? Plan meals. Creating a weekly menu not only saves time and energy, it ensures that you buy only what you need for the week and prevent you from buying foods that my end up going to waste, which saves you money. Use as much of your ingredients as you can, and be creative. Use some of your vegetable scraps to make broth. Learn how to store fruits and vegetables so they stay fresh longer inside or outside your refrigerator. Freeze, preserve, dehydrate or can surplus fruits and vegetables - especially abundant seasonal produce. Many fruits give off natural gases as they ripen, making other nearby produce spoil faster. Store bananas, apples, and tomatoes by themselves, and store fruits and vegetables in different bins. Wait to wash berries until you want to eat them to prevent mold. If you like to eat fruit at room temperature, but it should be stored in the refrigerator for maximum freshness, take what you ll eat for the day out of the refrigerator in the morning. Use airtight containers and chip clips to keep foods fresher. Compost in your back yard Take stock before you shop, make a list of what you intend to purchase Split the dish when eating out to avoid waste, unless you take home the leftovers and eat them. void clutter in the refrigerator. Practice FIFO - first in, first out If you think some foods might go to waste, add them to salads, casseroles, soups, or stir frys. Donate nutritious safe foods to the food pantry. Monitor what you toss, and develop a plan help prevent this in the future. If you find you are throwing out unused fresh produce, buy frozen vegetables and fruit, dried fruit, canned fruit packed in it s own juice, low sodium canned vegetables. Buy a smaller quantity of fresh produce, until you get better at planning and buying only what you will need or use.
