1 The Word FALL 2017 THE NEWSLETTER FOR THE FRIENDS OF ST. PAUL S EPISCOPAL CHURCH Meet our New Curate: Father Andy McQuery The Rev. Andy McQuery Starbuck Greetings and peace to the saints in Salem! I am excited to begin my ordained life among the good people of St. Paul s. As a native of the Pacific Northwest, I am grateful to be called to live and work in the most beautiful place in the world the Willamette Valley! I can only smile at landing in a parish where music is so integral to the community s identity and mission. As an ambitious teenager with dreams of becoming an opera singer, I leapt at the chance to study voice at the Manhattan School of Music. My career had an auspicious beginning, with a European debut in Zürich in that family-values classic Salome, followed by a role in the world premiere of Philip Glass s opera Galileo Galilei, which I performed sixty-some times in Chicago, New York, and London. (My part? I played a priest, naturally.) However, as a thirteen-year resident of New York City, I was also there on 9/11. It s a longer story for another time, but the short version is that my experience of that tragic day left me with debilitating anxiety, including physical illness, that damaged my voice and ended my music career. Unable to sing, I faced an identity crisis: who am I, and what can I do with my life? Homesick and sad, I returned to Oregon, to family and forests and our stunning coast, to heal and reinvent myself. Becoming active as a lay-leader at St. John the Baptist in Portland, I sensed a hunger in our diocese for conversation, study, and reconciliation around issues of faith and inclusion for LGBTQ+ people in the Church, and decided to join Integrity Oregon. Serving as the diocesan coordinator for five years, I worked with congregations from Portland to Ashland and all points in between, facilitating workshops on Scripture, theology, and diversity. In so doing, however, I discovered that my passion for the Church was broader and deeper than this one issue. Discerning a call to the priesthood, I headed off to seminary at the Berkeley Divinity School at Yale, where I graduated this past May. I was ordained to the transitional diaconate at Trinity Cathedral in Portland on June 10. I am a passionate advocate for what Presiding Bishop Curry calls the Episcopal branch of the Jesus Movement, convinced our links to ancient tradition are marvelous gifts we can offer a hurting world. In a culture that moves so fast, our way of being helps us, as the Prayer Book puts it, navigate things temporal, so that we lose not the things eternal. I am thrilled to be at St. Paul s. I look forward to getting to know Salem and can t wait to work with you to spread the Good News, Episcopal-style, in my new hometown. When not in church, I can likely be found hiking in the Oregon woods, listening to classical music, or reading theology with my cat, Starbuck, asleep in my lap. And, yes: though it took some years of rest, I can sing again. Peace, 1 FALL 2017
2 The Word THE NEWSLETTER FOR THE FRIENDS OF ST. PAUL S EPISCOPAL CHURCH WORSHIP A Message from Mother Anne: Dear Friends, How do you pray? As Episcopalians, we often think first of the way we pray in church the many ways really which include kneeling and singing. You might pray to end your day, in the tradition of Ignatius: reflecting on the events of the day in order to detect God s presence and discern God s guidance. There is now even an app for the Examen, and Daily Morning Prayer is on the Forward Movement website; two great supports for your prayer discipline. We often pray with our hands. Not only in the classic steeple position, but also as we serve those in need, as we do in so many ways at St. Paul s. And we pray with our legs and feet. I recently spoke about Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel s leadership during the civil rights movement of the 1960s, how his study of the biblical prophets led him to march with the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. For more about this inspiring spiritual leader, see the PBS Religion and Ethics profile of him (from 2008) available on YouTube. Our Book of Common Prayer says that the principal kinds of prayer are: adoration, praise, thanksgiving, penitence, oblation, intercession, and petition, and that prayer is responding to God, by thought and by deeds, with or without words. The prayer you do during our service of worship is not the only prayer you are called to do in the name of Jesus Christ. Everything you do can be sacramental, a sign of a whole and holy life. What might you be called to do with your hands, legs and feet by the teachings of our Lord? May God bless you and guide you in your active life of prayer. Grace and peace, The Rev. Anne Emry Interfaith Hospitality, : You re Invited! Autumn is my favorite season. I ve always felt that a new year should rightfully begin on September 1, rather than January 1. The weather shifts, nights grow cooler, colors sharpen, and the world whispers that something is coming. Autumn means the start of school, and holidays just around the corner. We shake off our summer torpor as we gather again after a term of heat and disbursement. Resolutions and plans are made, relationships renewed. Our church life is no exception. With a new program year comes new opportunities to make connections, deepen our faith, and engage with our neighbors. And you re invited to do that by joining our Interfaith Hospitality Ministry. Salem Interfaith Hospitality Network (Salem IHN) is an emergency family shelter located in West Salem. The shelter uses a rotating network of host and support churches, of which we are one. We take turns to provide overnight shelter and meals, a week at a time. Meanwhile, the families in the program receive assistance in locating affordable housing, stable employment, child care, and other skills to support their self-sufficiency. Hospitality is key to this shelter s mission statement. Each family that enters Salem IHN is valued as an honored guest. Put these dates on your calendar! October 8: An Interfaith Hospitality ministry volunteer appreciation, orientation and celebration event is scheduled for Sunday, October 8, after the 10:00 am service. Please plan to join us from 11:30-12:45 pm to hear from Salem Interfaith Hospitality Network Executive Director, TJ Putnam, and get questions answered about who we serve and how we help. While you re there, sign up for our upcoming hosting weeks in Door prizes and goodies provided! November 19-25: Our first hosting week of the year. Carve out a couple of hours during this week to help, and spend time with our fellow parishioners in service and thanksgiving. Questions? Contact Michelle Deister at michelledeister@hotmail.com or Hope to see you on October 8! - Michelle 2 FALL 2017

Come enjoy some light breakfast refreshments and learn more about the Sunday morning offerings for the faith formation of children at St. Paul s. The first meeting of both classes will immediately follow with the children joining the service at The Peace. YOUTH Godly Play is the wonderfully rich curriculum we use on Sunday mornings for children in kindergarten through 2nd grades. It teaches the art of using religious language parable, sacred story, silence and liturgical action helping people become more fully aware of the mystery of God s presence in their lives in deeply spiritual and highly creative ways. More information about the Godly Play curriculum can be found at Seasons of the Spirit is the curriculum we use for the 3rd-5th graders who gather on Sunday mornings. The children are introduced to issues of justice and fairness in SeasonsENCORE (Ages 9-11). This curriculum encourages children to work in groups to explore the faith traditions of others, develop Biblical knowledge, and ask questions. 4 The Word THE NEWSLETTER FOR THE FRIENDS OF ST. PAUL S EPISCOPAL CHURCH PROFILE A PARISHIONER: MARY ANNE BRYAN How long have you attended St. Paul s? I have attended St. Paul s for 26 years. What brought you here? Why do you stay? I was new to the Salem community and wanted to continue in the Episcopal church after moving from La Grande, OR, where I attended St. Peter s Episcopal Church. I come back because of the various ministries I am involved with and I consider St. Paul s to be my spiritual home. What ministries are you involved in at St. Paul s? I am a member of the Vestry and Parish Life Ministries. I have been involved with Interfaith Hospitality and Christmas Share. I have organized the parish picnic, and regularly donate to the Jason Lee Food Bank, and help out at Simonka House. My husband, Roy, is also involved with Simonka House and Interfaith Hospitality. What are your favorite things about St. Paul s? I enjoy the fellowship and the avenues here that connect me with the community. What are your hobbies / interests? I really enjoy gardening! St. Paul s has allowed my husband and I to integrate our hobby of gardening with various ministries. Roy and I have done much work on the Ellen Lane Community Garden in West Salem. I also enjoy birding, photography, hand making cards / scrap booking, and reading about history. How did you first get involved with the garden? I first got involved four years ago during the garden s first growing season. I currently have five beds in the garden. In 2016, the City of Salem gave the Distinguished Project community volunteer award to Ellen Lane Garden. Now, Roy and I are two of the three coordinators at the garden. I am responsible for the donations and getting the veggies to three food banks (Jason Lee Food Bank, Family Life Church, West Salem Methodist Church) and two other programs (Simonka House and Family Building Blocks Gracie s Place ). After all the donations, I usually use the veggies I grow in meals, but the yield is so high that I can freeze the veggies for the winter! Future plans for the garden? The Ellen Lane Community Garden has certainly grown since I got involved. Last summer - our third growing season - I took 1,903 lbs of vegetables to the Jason Lee Food Bank. This year we have a goal of yielding 3,000 lbs for donation. We currently have 80+ beds in the garden and envision having 110+ beds by spring Mary Anne, Roy, and SPY teamed up for a few hours of volunteer fun at the Ellen Lane Community Garden in August. Children s choirs meet Wednesday afternoons. Sing. Learn. Grow! Do you want some fabulous music education for your child or grandchild grades K-5? Would you like them to meet new friends from different neighborhoods? Wouldn t it be great if they could experience a high level of music and have FUN at the same time? We have the answer St. Paul s Music Program! 7 OUTREACH St. Paul s Roof Project If you would like to make a donation to help towards the cost of the roof repair, please visit our website and click the Roof Project button on the right. Checks can be made out to St. Paul s with the memo Roof Project. As of August 23, we have received 64% of the goal for matching funds, and we are grateful for your generosity! Let s make a final push to reach that goal by September 8! What will your new ministry be? St. Paul s Church is often thought of as the building we are blessed to worship in. It is used often and hardly ever empty. Just as any house needs upkeep and repairs, our house of worship needs to be taken care of. But St. Paul s Church is not our building. St. Paul s Church is us! We are the body of Christ here in this place called Salem, OR. As we worship and minister together we grow as a family and continue to serve the greater community of Salem. Each of us is traveling on our own spiritual journey. How is your journey going? Are you being filled spiritually? Are you giving of yourself to help others? Are you growing in knowledge? Here is where being a part of our church family can help. There are many places for you to minister right here at St. Paul s. You can teach or be taught. You can help with outreach projects once a year or daily. You can help with the physical building and grounds or you can take St. Paul s out to homebound parishioners. You can begin a social group for young families or help with a community garden. You can help visit people in the hospital or greet newcomers to our services. And our many worship services that fill us with awe and wonder, use the help of many people in preparation for and during the services. There is a place for young and old. There is need for ministry with young and old. Is there a ministry that would help you, or an area where you see a need for helping others? Talk to friends and other St. Paul s people about it. Put together a plan of action and then give Kati Arp a call. She knows what is happening in our facility and can assist you with facility use and maybe names of other people who would be interested in helping you get a small group up and moving. So many of our ongoing activities, studies, and guilds began with just a few people gathering together to fill a need. You can do it too. The Episcopal Church has been described as the priesthood of all believers. All of us are called to minister, not only to each other, but also to all people we meet and live with. I encourage you to pray about how you will do this. May your blessings be many, so that you may, in turn, bless others. What will your new ministry be? In peace, Mary Forner Did you know Rummage sales at St. Paul s have been ongoing for over 80 years because of the support by parishioners throughout the decades. In continuing this tradition, last year St. Clare s Guild was able to give over $3,500 to St. Paul s various missions, $3,500 to community outreach programs and over $2,300 to St. Joseph Guild (the Woodcutters) to continue their good works. The May 2017 sale was absolutely amazing because of donations from you of furniture, clothing, jewelry, appliances, bedding, décor, and the list goes on. The women of St. Clare s are hopeful the donations again will overload the patio October 6-8! Join us October 8-11 as we set up and/or on October as the sale is in progress. We are also grateful when members of the parish volunteer to help. Your time commitment is a win for the church, the community, and for those in need. Call with questions or to volunteer. 7 FALL 2017
