1 The Word WINTER 2017 THE NEWSLETTER FOR THE FRIENDS OF ST. PAUL S EPISCOPAL CHURCH A Message from Mother Anne: Dear Friends, When astronauts are in outer space, they spend their free time looking at Earth. They call it Earth gazing. In the vast expanse of black, they see a little blue planet, and they can t keep their eyes off it. It is precious. It is home. Here on Earth, we think we know what our planet looks like, because we know what a globe looks like; but the map is not the territory. When we look at a globe, we have some embedded assumptions like which way is up, and which is down. We see North America as above South America. In space the astronauts are weightless, moving around in a spacecraft that is rotating. Everything is in motion and there is no sense of up. In space orbit, astronauts see the whole world every ninety minutes. Astronaut Ron Garan said, You see that line that separates day into night slowly moving down the planet, thunderstorms in the horizon casting these long shadows as the sun sets, and then watching the Earth come alive when you see the lights from the cities and the towns shooting stars going below us, dancing curtains of auroras; [it is] very hard to describe the colors, the beauty, the motion. Earth gazing gives astronauts a sense of transcendence, and a larger picture of the connectedness of life. It is as if a fish could comprehend the ocean, and fully understand its origins and the range of its existence. Earth gazing prompts a kind of reverence for the Earth, our precious oasis, our island home in the vastness of space. Many astronauts have said that the experience of seeing Earth from space has changed their perspective. American space shuttle astronaut Leroy Chiao said, It really made me have a bigger picture of life. I don t worry about little things any more. In Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield s book, The Astronaut s Guide to Life on Earth, he says: I feel I have a personal obligation to be a good steward of our planet, and to educate others about what is happening to it. It is as if the astronauts became able to see the Earth as God does. A God s-eye view, a view from space, comprehends the entire world and all of humanity. It is possible to move out of our individual perspective the I that we identify with and see the unity of life. Astronauts can see clearcut forests. They can see fires destroying cities and forests. They can see the flooding of hurricanes. And they can see a beautiful watery planet with land masses and no boundaries. They see the Earth without the national boundaries which are etched on a globe, and they want to protect it because it is very good and because it is home. As we come to the end of the year, and approach our celebration of the incarnation of the Divine in our midst, in a manger in Bethlehem, let us marvel at the beauty of life and creation. Let us wonder at the birth of the Word made human flesh. Let us dedicate ourselves to honoring and preserving all things that were made through Christ Jesus, including our one holy world and every creature and person in it. Grace and Peace, The Rev. Anne Emry 1 WINTER 2017
2 The Word THE NEWSLETTER FOR THE FRIENDS OF ST. PAUL S EPISCOPAL CHURCH WORSHIP I often hear people say how important it is to invest in our young people, because they are the Church of the future. This is true, but joyfully children are very much part of the present at St. Paul s. They are vibrant, engaged, prayerful, and already contributing in a variety of ways. It is great fun helping them explore their faith and encouraging them to grow as disciples in the Episcopal branch of the Jesus Movement. I am inspired and encouraged by what I see. A few weeks ago I had a chance to talk with the Primary Choir (singers from Kindergarten to second grade) about St. Paul, and how he became famous for writing letters about Christian life to entire communities, rather than individuals. So together we composed a letter to the People of Salem as if we were St. Paul and they had no trouble at all coming up with Paul s key themes. They already understood that God loves everyone, no matter what, despite our imperfections (Romans 8:38-39). Fr. Andy and SPY pose for a picture while building houses in Eugene, OR. In August, I joined the middle-schoolers on retreat to help build and repair low-income housing sites in Eugene. Cheerful and seeing the importance of helping others, they were full of ideas for future social service projects. In particular, they showed a deep concern for animals and our environment. Our high school group gathers for supper and fellowship every Sunday. Recently, we sat down with a stack of newspapers and talked about how to respond to some of those headlines as people of faith. They asked tough questions, and came up with some important insights. Perhaps most importantly, they listened to different perspectives with care and respect. Across all age groups, the young people of St. Paul s are already demonstrating the curiosity, the intellectual engagement, the commitment to social justice, and the participation in prayer and liturgy that are the hallmarks of Christian life. It is joyous to behold. Peace, St. Paul s Bread Basket Ministry The Bread Basket Ministry of St. Paul s has been so ably coordinated by Nancy Schafer for many years. With her passing, this meal preparation and delivery service will be coordinated by Catherine Pederson with assistance by Marion Perry. When members of St. Paul s find the need to have temporary help with meals, please call Kati Arp for your take-out order! Kati will ask for number of persons in the household, dietary preferences and the approximate duration and frequency of delivered meals. If you enjoy cooking and would consider assisting with this important way of carrying for our members, please let Kati know by contacting the church office at or ing her at katiarp@stpaulsoregon.org. 2 WINTER 2017

4 The Word THE NEWSLETTER FOR THE FRIENDS OF ST. PAUL S EPISCOPAL CHURCH PROFILE A PARISHIONER: HOLLIE GROVES Hollie Groves Elijah and Ruby Zekiah How long have you attended St. Paul s? This last August, it has been 49 years. What brought you here? Why do you stay? When I arrived in Salem I was a fairly new Episcopalian. I was not raised as an Episcopalian. I came to St. Paul s to see if I liked it. I did and I stayed. What keeps me here is the caring and supportive community of St. Paul s. What ministries are you involved at St. Paul s? I want to stress that a lot of people here help with all of these activities; I do not do anything alone. I taught Sunday school about three years for seventh graders. I ve been in the choir for over 30 years. I have been involved with Chi-Yo for over 20 years. For 9 years, I did meals for the Interfaith Hospitality Network. I have been in various Bible study groups on different occasions. I have been and still am actively involved in Evensong in many capacities. I was an Evensong usher for years, and I now oversee the mailing crew and the assembling of bulletins. I also distribute music each week for choir members. I secure robes for new choir members. This includes Trinity choir and the Bell choir. I see that the robes are all repaired, altered, and cleaned. In the past, I have filed music in the music library. For the choir, I am the person who organizes meals or help for others in the choir. I take choir contributions to Helping Hands which can be weekly. When asked, I have provided lunches for Evensong. I was an office volunteer for years. I m on my third year of Vestry and am Junior Warden for one year. I attend all Property Committee meetings as the Property Committee liaison for Vestry. In the past, at directors request, I have made phone calls to 20 to 30 people to check on them or to invite them to services. What are your hobbies and or interests? I love music. I read a lot - everything but sci-fi. My grandchildren and great-grandchildren. What is your favorite food? Pizza. What is the little known fact about you? I was born in North Saskatchewa, Canada. If you re stuck on a desert island what five items do you bring? Food, water, book, hymnal, great-grandchildren. What is your favorite TV show? Law and Order and Blue Bloods. Outreach Volunteer Opportunity Kairos Kitchen Lunch: Continuing our tradition of helping to feed people who are struggling or homeless. St. Paul s will be providing a hearty lunch at St. Mark s Lutheran church through the Kairos Kitchen program. Sunday, December 3: volunteers are needed to set-up, cook, serve and clean-up a lunch for people at St. Mark s on Marion St. in Salem. Set-up and cooking starts at 12:30 pm with the meal being served at 2:00 pm and clean-up usually completed around 3:45 pm. Just a few hours of your time can mean a world of difference in the life of another. 6 The Word THE NEWSLETTER FOR THE FRIENDS OF ST. PAUL S EPISCOPAL CHURCH Twenty Years of Music Ministry at St. Paul s The choirs have returned to fall practice and I now reflect on twenty years of Music Ministry at St. Paul s. Thanks to God and the people of St. Paul s is all I can utter. This congregation has embraced me beyond measure. Things have been pretty consistent these past twenty years. Glenda Blanchard and Leslie Dinsdale have ministered along side me with the Advent and Primary choirs the entire time. Barry Nelson has served as section leader along with his brother David (just a couple years less). Many members of the Trinity Choir are still singing with me. The Grace Notes Choir is still flourishing and the St. Paul s Ringers are better than ever. I am so proud of the St. Paul s Music Guild and the incredible guest artists that have shared music in this place. Choirs from Worcester Cathedral, St. Thomas Church NYC, Tallis Scholars and Chanticleer have presented along with the Canadian Brass and the Los Angeles Guitar Quartet. Many of our own members have shared their musical talents in these concert. A total of 180 concerts! My work in this place has been about people and connections to God. It has be my goal to remain consistent and present in your lives. You certainly have been for me. I am so grateful. Soli Deo Gloria.
