SUNDAY SCHEDULE 1300 E Aloha St Worship Service 10:00 am WORSHIP SERVICE Nursery 6 months - 2 years Grace Kids 2s: Room 117 3s: Fellowship Hall (FH) s/5s (PreK): Room 119 SUMMER 2018 My God, Bones what have I done? These are the iconic words of Captain James Tiberias Kirk from the movie Star Trek III: The Search for Spock, after Captain Kirk did the unthinkable for fans of the science fiction TV show and franchise Star Trek he destroyed the USS Enterprise which was symbol of inspiration, home and optimism for the characters and viewers of the beloved program. Destroying the Enterprise was like eating cornflakes without the milk, or having cheese with no bread or wine; you just can t have Kirk, Spock and Bones without the Enterprise! For those of us unfamiliar with pop culture references and shows like Star Trek, I am sure you can resonate with the tragedy and heartbreak of being displaced from home, of being disillusioned when once inspired, and pessimistic where there was once optimism. To help guide us on our life s journey, stripped of our normal leadership as a church, we are taking a break from our annual summer survey of the Psalms and spending some time with the remnant of believers in the Old Testament who were stripped of their normal leadership and displaced from their own Enterprise, the Temple of the Living God. This Summer, Grace will focus on the books of Haggai and Zechariah that speak to a people who are called to rebuild the Temple that was a symbol of inspiration to the nations, home to God and his covenant people, and a sign of optimism that one day the world would be made right again. After Kirk heartbreakingly stares at the Enterprise burning up in the atmosphere and asks, What have I done?, Bones replies, What you had to do, what you always do. Turn death into a fighting chance to live.. In Scripture, God allowed the destruction of the Temple in response to our sin, but through that death His people were reborn. In Christ, His Body, or Temple, (John 2: 19), was destroyed so that in his death we might live. This Summer as we read and reflect, may the words of Haggai and Zechariah inspire us all towards true faith and obedience. 3 REFLECTION QUOTES I know, too, that ever since he lost his leg last voyage by that accursed whale, he's been a kind of moody-desperate moody, and savage sometimes; but that will all pass off. And once for all, let me tell thee and assure thee, young man, it's better to sail with a moody good captain than a laughing bad one. So good-bye to thee-and wrong not Captain Ahab, because he happens to have a wicked name. Peleg, the owner of the Pequod on what makes a good captain. Moby Dick by Herman Melville Safe?...Who said anything about safe? Course he isn t safe. But he s good. He s the King, I tell you. Mr. Beaver on Aslan. The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe by C.S. 4 Please silence all mobile phones and electronic devices for the duration of the worship service. Text in bold is read together by the entire congregation. Plain text is read by one of the worship service leaders FIFTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST WELCOME CALL TO WORSHIP Adapted from Psalm 9:1-2 We will give thanks to the Lord with our whole heart; We will recount all of your wonderful deeds. We will be glad and exult in you; We will sing praise to your name, O Most High. Seated Standing The small symbols you will see throughout these pages correspond to a "Key to Liturgy" that you can pick up in the lobby to engage children in the elements of our worship service. Our worship begins each week with a call to worship. We are gathered here today because God, our Creator, desires to have a relationship with us. Whether we realize it or not, he is the one calling us to himself today and every day. Brian Eichelberger 2012 E On The Eye Chart / Songs From The Penalty Box Lectio Sacra means sacred reading. It has been the practice of the church for thousands of years to have portions of the bible read during worship services. The assumption behind this practice is that we are people who need to be shaped by all of God s word. 1 Oh! Great Is Our God! Oh! Oh! No So Great Great is is our our God! Ó Ó j J Ó Seated When Ahab saw Elijah, Ahab said to him, Is it you, you troubler of Israel? And he answered, I have not troubled Israel, but you have, and your father's house, because you have abandoned the commandments of the Lord and followed the Baals. Now therefore send and gather all Israel to me at Mount Carmel, and the 50 prophets of Baal and the 00 prophets of Asherah, who eat at Jezebel's table. (Continued on the next page).

So Ahab sent to all the people of Israel and gathered the prophets together at Mount Carmel. And Elijah came near to all the people and said, How long will you go limping between two different opinions? If the Lord is God, follow him; but if Baal, then follow him. And the people did not answer him a word. Then Elijah said to the people, I, even I only, am left a prophet of the Lord, but Baal's prophets are 50 men. Let two bulls be given to us, and let them choose one bull for themselves and cut it in pieces and lay it on the wood, but put no fire to it. And I will prepare the other bull and lay it on the wood and put no fire to it. And you call upon the name of your god, and I will call upon the name of the Lord, and the God who answers by fire, he is God. And all the people answered, It is well spoken. Then Elijah said to the prophets of Baal, Choose for yourselves one bull and prepare it first, for you are many, and call upon the name of your god, but put no fire to it. And they took the bull that was given them, and they prepared it and called upon the name of Baal from morning until noon, saying, O Baal, answer us! But there was no voice, and no one answered. And they limped around the altar that they had made. And at noon Elijah mocked them, saying, Cry aloud, for he is a god. Either he is musing, or he is relieving himself, or he is on a journey, or perhaps he is asleep and must be awakened. And they cried aloud and cut themselves after their custom with swords and lances, until the blood gushed out upon them. And as midday passed, they raved on until the time of the offering of the oblation, but there was no voice. No one answered; no one paid attention. Then Elijah said to all the people, Come near to me. And all the people came near to him. And he repaired the altar of the Lord that had been thrown down. Elijah took twelve stones, according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Jacob, to whom the word of the Lord came, saying, Israel shall be your name, and with the stones he built an altar in the name of the Lord. And he made a trench about the altar, as great as would contain two seahs of seed. And he put the wood in order and cut the bull in pieces and laid it on the wood. And he said, Fill four jars with water and pour it on the burnt offering and on the wood. And he said, Do it a second time. And they did it a second time. And he said, Do it a third time. And they did it a third time. And the water ran around the altar and filled the trench also with water. And at the time of the offering of the oblation, Elijah the prophet came near and said, O Lord, God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, let it be known this day that you are God in Israel, and that I am your servant, and that I have done all these things at your word. Answer me, O Lord, answer me, that this people may know that you, O Lord, are God, and that you have turned their hearts back. Then the fire of the Lord fell and consumed the burnt offering and the wood and the stones and the dust, and licked up the water that was in the trench. And when all the people saw it, they fell on their faces and said, The Lord, he is God; the Lord, he is God. This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God! 2

INTERLUDE CONFESSION OF SIN Based on Psalm 51:10-12 Standing Confession of sin happens within the context of relationship, both with God and each other. We confess together, in community, before a gracious God who has given us himself. Confession both acknowledges our need for mercy and celebrates its abundance in Christ. Merciful God, you pardon all who truly repent and turn to you. We humbly confess our sins and ask your mercy. We have not loved you with a pure heart, nor have we loved our neighbor as ourselves. We have not done justice, loved kindness, or walked humbly with you, our God. Have mercy on us, O God, in your loving-kindness. In your great compassion, cleanse us from our sin. Create in us a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within us. Do not cast us from your presence, or take your Holy Spirit from us. Restore to us the joy of your salvation and sustain us with your bountiful Spirit through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen. (You are invited to confess your sins silently.) RECEIVING OF GRACE Psalm 17:2-3, 5 The Lord builds up Jerusalem; he gathers the outcasts of Israel. He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds. Great is our Lord, and abundant in power; his understanding is beyond measure. May the peace of Christ be with you! And also with you! 3

HYMN OF GOD S LOVE Amazing Grace Amazing grace! How sweet the sound That saved a wretch like me! I once was lost, but now am found; Was blind, but now I see. Through many dangers, toils and snares, I have already come; Tis grace hath brought me safe thus far, And grace will lead me home. John Newton, 1779 New Britain, 1831 (last stanza author unknown) Twas grace that taught my heart to fear, And grace my fears relieved; How precious did that grace appear The hour I first believed. When we ve been there ten thousand years, Bright shining as the sun, We ve no less days to sing God s praise Than when we d first begun. PRAYING THE PSALMS Psalms: 9:7-20 (NIV) The Lord reigns forever; he has established his throne for judgment. He rules the world in righteousness and judges the peoples with equity. The Lord is a refuge for the oppressed, a stronghold in times of trouble. Those who know your name trust in you, for you, Lord, have never forsaken those who seek you. Sing the praises of the Lord, enthroned in Zion; proclaim among the nations what he has done. For he who avenges blood remembers; he does not ignore the cries of the afflicted. Lord, see how my enemies persecute me! Have mercy and lift me up from the gates of death, that I may declare your praises in the gates of Daughter Zion, and there rejoice in your salvation. Praying through the Psalms each week teaches us how to pray, using the prayer book of ancient Israel. As we pray, there will be pauses for reflection. The nations have fallen into the pit they have dug; their feet are caught in the net they have hidden. The Lord is known by his acts of justice; the wicked are ensnared by the work of their hands. The wicked go down to the realm of the dead, all the nations that forget God. But God will never forget the needy; the hope of the afflicted will never perish. Arise, Lord, do not let mortals triumph; let the nations be judged in your presence. Strike them with terror, Lord; let the nations know they are only mortal.

Martin Luther, Frederick Hedge, 1853 Prayer for Those Searching for the Truth Jesus, you claim to be the way, the truth, and the life. Grant that I might be undaunted by the cost of following you as I consider the reasons for doing so. If what you claim is true, please guide me, teach me, and open to me the reality of who you are. Give me an understanding of you that is coherent, convincing, and that leads to the life that you promise. Amen. Prayer for Those Struggling with Sin Lord Jesus, grant that I may see in you the fulfillment of all my need and may turn from every false satisfaction to feed on you, the true and living bread. Enable me to lay aside the sin that clings so closely, and run with perseverance the race set before me, looking to you, the author and perfecter of my faith. Amen. WELCOME & ANNOUNCEMENTS Ó Did And. That Seated Prayer of Belief Lord Jesus, I admit that I am weaker and more sinful than I ever before believed, but through you I am more loved and accepted than I ever dared hope. I thank you for paying my debt, bearing my punishment on the cross, and offering forgiveness and new life. Knowing that you have been raised from the dead, I turn from my sins and receive you as Savior and Lord. Amen. 5 PASSING THE PEACE As recipients of God's grace, we gladly receive peace from him. In response to his grace, we also extend that grace to one another with a handshake or a hug. Traditionally, Christians have greeted one another during this time in the service with the phrase, "May the peace of Christ be with you" and receive back the greeting "And also with you." 13 THE SACRAMENT OF COMMUNION Communion, also called the Lord s Supper or the Eucharist, is the family meal of Christians. We invite all baptized followers of Jesus Christ who acknowledge their sins against God and their neighbors and confess their need for the grace of Christ to partake of this meal. If you are a Christian and haven t been baptized, please talk with one of our pastors. We would be honored to baptize you. We hope that this time is helpful to you as you consider your relationship with Jesus Christ and with his people, the church. If you would like prayer during communion, intercessors will be available at the front of the sanctuary to pray with you. The Sursum Corda The Lord be with you. And with your spirit. Lift up your hearts. We lift them up to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is meet and right to do so. It is right, our duty and our joy, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name: Allergen-free communion elements (wafer ingredients: organic brown rice flour, organic white rice flour) are available at the center of the communion table. To partake, please dip in the wine cup on the table, then proceed through the line. Prayer for Receiving Communion Lord Jesus, your perfect life, death, and resurrection are the source of all blessing in this life and the life to come. As I eat this bread and drink this cup, renew me in the joy and glory of knowing and serving you. I come to this table on the basis of your merit only and not my own. As you have completely and fully offered yourself for me, I now completely and fully offer myself to you as a living sacrifice. Amen. The Sursum Corda (Latin: Lift up your hearts ) is an opening dialogue in the Eucharistic liturgy of the Christian Church and dates back (at least) to the third century. This text encourages the church to come with thankfulness and joy to the Lord s table. Sanctus Ho - ly, ho - ly, ho - ly Lord, God of pow'r and might, heav'n and earth are full of your glo - ry. It is an invitation to join the voices of the church with the heavenly host, who are continually proclaiming the Father s glory (Isaiah 6:1-3; Matthew 21:9). by Dan Koch

SERMON TEXT Mark :33-1 [33] With many such parables he spoke the word to them, as they were able to hear it. [3] He did not speak to them without a parable, but privately to his own disciples he explained everything. [35] On that day, when evening had come, he said to them, Let us go across to the other side. [36] And leaving the crowd, they took him with them in the boat, just as he was. And other boats were with him. [37] And a great windstorm arose, and the waves were breaking into the boat, so that the boat was already filling. [38] But he was in the stern, asleep on the cushion. And they woke him and said to him, Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing? [39] And he awoke and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, Peace! Be still! And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm. [0] He said to them, Why are you so afraid? Have you still no faith? [1] And they were filled with great fear and said to one another, Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him? 16
