Lord, who throughout these forty days for us did fast and pray, teach us with you to mourn our sins and close by you to stay. As you with Satan did contend, and did the victory win, O give us strength in you to fight, in you to conquer sin. As you did hunger and did thirst, so teach us, gracious Lord, to die to self, and so to live by your most holy Word. And through these days of penitence, and through your Passiontide, forevermore, in life and death, O Lord, with us a bide. Abide with us, that through this life of doubts and hope and pain, an Easter of unending joy we may at last attain! Lord, Who Throughout These Forty Days Claudia Frances Hernaman (1873) Lent

SUNDAY SCHEDULE 1300 E Aloha St One Service 9:00 am FIRST SERVICE 9:00 AM Nursery 6 months - 2 years Toddlers (2&3): Room 117 PreK: Room 119 Fellowship Sunday Brunch 10:30 AM LENT 2019 We seem to live our lives not in peace, but in pieces. Jonathan Chaplin, Living with Integrity in a Splintered World Most of us know that we should make some changes to our lives, but we often never get around to them. Many of us would like to eat better, exercise (at least a little), pray more, and read Scripture more. But somehow these things all seem to get pushed to the back burner so we can focus our attention and energy on what has been called the tyranny of the urgent. This is the gift of the season of Lent, the 40-day period of time leading up to the 7-week Easter Season that begins on Easter Sunday. The church, in its wisdom, knows how we can tend to get off-track over the course of a year. So, every spring, we are invited to enter into the disciplines of the Lenten season so that we might get back on course (for disciplines, think intentional practices). This means that Lent is not a time to pretend like we re spiritual superstars. Truth be told, when we begin to engage or, re-engage in spiritual disciplines like fasting, morning and evening prayer, tithing, and corporate worship, we quickly begin to see how much opposition we have in our own hearts towards doing the very things that will help us grow as followers of Christ. In other words, we actually need the re-boot opportunity that Lent offers every year precisely because we re not spiritual superstars. Also, it s important to know that the appropriate posture to take towards these disciplines is progress and growth, not shame and guilt. We re not doing them so that we can persuade God that he can finally accept us as his children. Instead, we pick up these practices with the hopes that God will bless us with new growth and new experiences of his mercy and goodness. So, we invite you to join the leaders at Grace and enter into Lent this year. We have put together a brief guide (available at the Welcome Center) that we prayerfully hope will help you make progress in your life with God. Each week has a Scriptural and thematic focus that will go along with Sunday s sermon text. May God bless you over the upcoming weeks. Let us worship! 3 REFLECTION QUOTES The enormous entertainment industry of our land is a sign of the depletion of joy in our culture. Society is a bored, gluttonous king employing a court jester to divert it after an overindulgent meal. But that kind of joy never penetrates our lives, never changes our basic constitution. The effects are extremely temporary--a few minutes, a few hours, a few days at most...but there is something we can do. We can decide to live in response to the abundance of God, and not under the dictatorship of our own poor needs. Eugene Peterson on Psalm 126, A Long Obedience in the Same Direction

Please silence all mobile phones and electronic devices for the duration of the worship service. Text in bold is read together by the entire congregation. Plain text is read by one of the worship service leaders The small symbols you will see throughout these pages correspond to a "Key to Liturgy". Our worship begins each week with a call to worship. We are gathered here today because God, our Creator, desires to have a relationship with us. Whether we realize it or not, he is the one calling us to himself today and every day. SIXTH SUNDAY OF LENT WELCOME CALL TO WORSHIP Based on Isaiah 43, Psalm 26 Lord God, in this season of Lent we look forward to our remembrance of Jesus death and our celebration of his resurrection. We pray that your Spirit will renew in us today our anticipation for these events and our awareness that Jesus death and resurrection are a sure source of hope and life. In the power of Jesus name we pray. Amen. Our God is a God of power and strength! God has created each of us with tender care. Our God is a God of majesty and awe! God walks with each of us every step of the way. Our God is a God of glory and wonder! God loves each of us with tenderness and passion. Our God calls us each by name. God calls each of us to unite in worship together! Seated Standing Brian Eichelberger, 2009 Oh! Great is Our God! Oh! Great is our God! So we should worship greatly! No song is too loud! No orchestra too stately to hail the majesty of our King, so lift your voices loud as we sing. Oh! Great is our God! And we cannot contain it! We sing from our souls, affected by his greatness. His mercy covers all that he s made, showing his glory and his grace. Oh! Great is our God! So let our songs be endless! So awesome his ways, how could we comprehend them? So we will make it known to our kids and we will sing about the gracious gifts you give. We will sing your praise and pour forth your fame. We will bless your name. Let everyone give thanks, because our God is great! We will sing your praise and pour forth your fame. We will bless your name. Let everyone give thanks, because our God is great! (sing 3x) We will sing 1

All Creatures of Our God and King All creatures of our God and King, lift up your voice and with us sing Alleluia, Alleluia! Words: St. Francis of Assisi ca., 1225 Trans. William H. Draper, 1926 Music: Lasst Uns Erfreuen Thou burning sun with golden beam, thou silver moon with softer gleam, O praise him, O praise him, Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia! Thou rushing wind that art so strong, ye clouds that sail in heaven along, O praise him, Alleluia! Thou rising morn in praise rejoice, ye lights of evening find a voice, O praise him, O praise him, Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia! All ye who are of tender heart, forgiving others, take your part, sing his praises, Alleluia! Ye who long pain and sorrow bear, praise God and on him cast your care, O praise him, O praise him, Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia! Let all things their Creator bless, and worship him in humbleness, O praise him, Alleluia! Praise, praise the Father, praise the Son, and praise the Spirit, Three in One, O praise him, O praise him, Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia! 2

Confession of sin happens within the context of relationship, both with God and each other. We confess together, in community, before a gracious God who has given us himself. Confession both acknowledges our need for mercy and celebrates its abundance in Christ. CONFESSION OF SIN From The Worship Sourcebook Oh God, our creator, you made all creatures. Everything in heaven and on earth has been created to praise you. You ve made us specifically in your image and call us to bless your holy name and worship you in humbleness. Yet too often we feel broken, weak, and overwhelmed by the daily demands of life in this city and this world. We are unable to see your glory in the rushing winds, the clouds, the rising morn, and the evening lights. Standing Lord, we need you. So let us humbly confess our sins and shortcomings in order to worship you more fully in spirit and in truth: Merciful God, you made us in your image, with a mind to know you, a heart to love you, and a will to serve you. But our knowledge is imperfect, our love inconstant, our obedience incomplete. Day by day, we fail to grow into your likeness. In your tender love, forgive us through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen. (You are invited to confess your sins silently.) RECEIVING OF GRACE Romans 8:38-39 Brothers and sisters, here the good news: For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. May the peace of Christ be with you! And also with you! 3

HYMN OF GOD S LOVE How Deep The Father s Love For Us How deep the Father s love for us, how vast beyond all measure that he should give his only Son to make a wretch his treasure. It was my sin that held him there until it was accomplished; his dying breath has brought me life. I know that it is finished. Stuart Townend 1995 Thankyou Music How great the pain of searing loss. The Father turns his face away as wounds which mar the Chosen One bring many sons to glory. Behold the man upon a cross, my sin upon his shoulders. Ashamed, I hear my mocking voice call out among the scoffers. I will not boast in anything: no gifts, no power, no wisdom. But I will boast in Jesus Christ: his death and resurrection. Why should I gain from his reward? I cannot give an answer. But this I know with all my heart: his wounds have paid my ransom. Before The Throne Of God Above Before the throne of God above I have a strong and perfect plea A great High Priest whose name is Love Who ever lives and pleads for me Because the sinless Savior died my sinful soul is counted free For God the Just is satisfied To look on Him and pardon me to look on Him and pardon me Charitie Lees Bancroft and Vikki Cook 1997 Sovereign Grace Worship My name is graven on His hands; my name is written on His heart I know that while in heaven He stands No tongue can bid me thence depart, No tongue can bid me thence depart When Satan tempts me to despair and tells me of the guilt within Upward I look and see Him there who made an end of all my sin Behold Him there the Risen Lamb my perfect spotless Righteousness The great unchangeable I Am The King of Glory and of grace One with Himself I cannot die my soul is purchased by His blood My life is hid with Christ on high with Christ my Savior and my God With Christ my Savior and my God 4

PRAYING THE PSALMS Psalm 126 (NIV) Praying through the Psalms each week teaches us how to pray, using the prayer book of ancient Israel. As we pray, there will be pauses for reflection. When the Lord restored the fortunes of Zion, we were like those who dreamed. Our mouths were filled with laughter, our tongues with songs of joy. Then it was said among the nations, The Lord has done great things for them. The Lord has done great things for us, and we are filled with joy. Isaac Wardell 2011 Bifrost Arts Restore our fortunes, Lord, like streams in the Negev. Those who sow with tears will reap with songs of joy. Those who go out weeping, carrying seed to sow, will return with songs of joy, carrying sheaves with them. Psalm 126 Our mouths, they were filled, filled with laughter; our tongues, they were loosed, loosed with joy. The nations will say He has done great things! The nations will sing songs of joy. Restore us, O Lord! Restore us, O Lord! Restore us, O Lord! Restore us, O Lord! Chorus: Although we are weeping, Lord, help us keep sowing the seeds of your kingdom for the day you will reap them! Your sheaves, we will carry; Lord, please do not tarry! All those who sow weeping will go out with songs of joy! (Chorus) All those who sow weeping will go out with songs of joy! All those who sow weeping will go out with songs of joy! 5

WELCOME & ANNOUNCEMENTS Seated PASSING THE PEACE As recipients of God's grace, we gladly receive peace from him. In response to his grace, we also extend that grace to one another with a handshake or a hug. Traditionally, Christians have greeted one another during this time in the service with the phrase, "May the peace of Christ be with you" and receive back the greeting "And also with you." Prayer of Belief Lord Jesus, I admit that I am weaker and more sinful than I ever before believed, but through you I am more loved and accepted than I ever dared hope. I thank you for paying my debt, bearing my punishment on the cross, and offering forgiveness and new life. Knowing that you have been raised from the dead, I turn from my sins and receive you as Savior and Lord. Amen. HOMILY Joy On Either Side Psalm 126 Rev. Jason Davison Sermons can be streamed and downloaded at graceseattle.org/resources. Prayer for Those Struggling with Sin Lord Jesus, grant that I may see in you the fulfillment of all my need and may turn from every false satisfaction to feed on you, the true and living bread. Enable me to lay aside the sin that clings so closely, and run with perseverance the race set before me, looking to you, the author and perfecter of my faith. Amen. INTERLUDE OFFERING The offering is a way for members and friends of Grace Church Seattle to support the church s mission and ministry. If you are our guest today, please let us know you ve joined us today, as well as any comments or prayer requests, by placing your welcome card in the offering basket. Prayer for Those Searching for the Truth Jesus, you claim to be the way, the truth, and the life. Grant that I might be undaunted by the cost of following you as I consider the reasons for doing so. If what you claim is true, please guide me, teach me, and open to me the reality of who you are. Give me an understanding of you that is coherent, convincing, and that leads to the life that you promise. Amen. 6

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE Standing, Seated, or Kneeling We invite anyone to share a prayer request or praise with the congregation so that we may pray with and for you at this time. Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing Come, Thou Fount of every blessing, tune my heart to sing Thy grace Streams of mercy, never ceasing, call for songs of loudest praise Standing Teach me some melodious sonnet, sung by flaming tongues above Praise the mount, I'm fixed upon it, mount of God s unchanging love Here I raise my Ebenezer, hither by Thy help I m come And I hope by Thy good pleasure, safely to arrive at home Jesus sought me when a stranger, wandering from the fold of God He to rescue me from danger, interposed His precious blood Oh to grace how great a debtor, daily I'm constrained to be Let Thy goodness, like a fetter; bind my wandering heart to Thee Prone to wander, Lord I feel it, prone to leave the God I love Here's my heart, oh take and seal it, seal it for Thy courts above 7

THE SACRAMENT OF COMMUNION Seated Communion, also called the Lord s Supper or the Eucharist, is the family meal of Christians. We invite all baptized followers of Jesus Christ who acknowledge their sins against God and their neighbors and confess their need for the grace of Christ to partake of this meal. If you are a Christian and haven t been baptized, please talk with one of our pastors. We would be honored to baptize you. We hope that this time is helpful to you as you consider your relationship with Jesus Christ and with his people, the church. If you would like prayer during communion, intercessors will be available at the front of the sanctuary to pray with you. Prayer for Receiving Communion Lord Jesus, your perfect life, death, and resurrection are the source of all blessing in this life and the life to come. As I eat this bread and drink this cup, renew me in the joy and glory of knowing and serving you. I come to this table on the basis of your merit only and not my own. As you have completely and fully offered yourself for me, I now completely and fully offer myself to you as a living sacrifice. Amen. Allergen-free communion elements (wafer ingredients: organic brown rice flour, organic white rice flour) are available at the center of the communion table. To partake, please dip in the wine cup on the table, then proceed through the line. The Words of Institution The Ministration of Communion "Ministration" is the action of administering the sacrament (Communion) 8

Amen. SENDING Let us go forth and serve the world as those who love our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Thanks be to God! Members of the prayer team will be available to pray for you at the front of the sanctuary at the conclusion of each service. 9
