1 March 2016 Trestleboard Oceanside San Dieguito Lodge No. 381, F&AM March 2016 Officers Line 2016 Worshipful Master David Lonergan, PM Senior Warden Fred Burkhardt Junior Warden Mark Nielsen Treasurer Drew Middleton, PM Secretary Kyle Bradd Assistant Secretary Steve Lerner Senior Deacon Joseph Manimat Junior Deacon Dave Smith Marshal Mark Read Senior Steward Nick Angelis Junior Steward Vacant Chaplain John Chapman, PM Tiler Roy Youngblood, PM Officer s Coach Tom Traver, PM From The East Brethren, I greet you on the Square! Our fraternity is defined as "a peculiar system of morality, veiled in allegory and illustrated by symbols". This comes with a set of rules of acceptable behavior outside and inside the lodge. We often neglect to follow these rules, and I believe we should be reminded of their existence at all time, especially for those that are applicable within the lodge. I would like to share with you something which is often called Masonic Etiquette. I will not dwell into the details of these rules, but just a few that I personally think are important to share with you (although I have no doubt that you are aware of them): 1- Attire: We should be properly dressed when we enter the lodge room (generally black/dark suit, white shirt), with apron on. 2- Movements in the Lodge: All movements in the lodge should be squared. At no time should anyone cross between the Master and the Altar while 'opened' or between the Junior Warden and Altar while at 'refreshment' (except during a degree). 3- Posture: The Lodge is a sacred place and we should strive to exhibit a good posture while at labor. No legs crossing Side Talking: Side talk is not appropriate when the lodge is opened. 5- Prompting: Only the Master or a brother designated by him is allowed to correct or prompt others during ritual or degree work. 6- Voting and Balloting: Voting is mandatory. When the ballot is open, nobody is authorized to leave or enter the lodge. Never share how you intend to vote in a secret ballot. - David Lonergan 1

Our Institution was built as an establishment to care for our Brethren and their family. We can take steps to this through a better experience each time we come to the Lodge. There is always room for improvements and if anyone has any ideas how we may approach that I am willing to listen. By being on the Level we are of no eminence of station and should make us not forget that we are all Brethren. Everyone from the most senior member, the Worshipful Master and way to the youngest Master Mason we must learn to cohesively work with each other. By working together and accepting each other as equals, we can continue and strengthen the Peace and Harmony of the lodge that was built for many years past. Let us apply the teaching of Civility in our daily duties. As Masons, we can serve as catalysts for change and be facilitators of civil dialogue. Together, as Masons, we can build a treasure chest of resources that can be used throughout all of Masonry. Let us be encouraged to engage in civil dialogue and create more effective communities. Civil dialogue is the cornerstone that allows us to see things from a more enlightened perspective. On the Level - Fred Burkhardt From the South Our Masonic Education for the month of February was focused on Brotherly Love and Blue Lodges. This was in response to the amazing showing of brothers from our district lodges to attend a dual second degree at Vista Lodge in late January - 35 brethren in attendance! We also talked about why we are called Blue Lodges and an in-depth look into the origination of the color Masonic Blue. In March, we will continue on with our cardinal virtues of Relief and Truth as well as other musings we find along the way as we contemplate these themes. One of the various duties of the Jr. Warden is to facilitate refreshments at our various functions. We seem to have had a great response to heavy hors d'oeuvres of charcuterie and cheeses, as well as hummus and crackers. If there is anything in particular you would like see at our next function, or if you have a particular dietary need, feel free to drop me a line and let me know! Greatly looking forward to seeing you all at lodge! By the Plumb -Mark Nielsen 2

Grand Lodge of California Lodge Info: info@oceansidefreemason.org BANQUET NIGHT By Kudyard Kipling "Once in so often," King Solomon said, Watching his quarrymen drill the stone, "We will club our garlic and wine and bread And banquet together beneath my throne. And all the Brethren shall come to that mess "Send a swift shallop to Hiram of Tyre, Felling and floating our beautiful trees, Say that the brethren and I desire Talk with our Brethren who use the seas. And we shall be happy to meet them at mess "Carry this message to Hiram Abif-- Excellent Master of forge and mine: I and the Brethren would like it if He and the Brethren will come to dine (Garments from Bozrah or morningdress) "God gave the Hyssop and Cedar their place-- Also the Bramble, the Fig and the Thorn-- But that is no reason to black a man's Face Because he is not what he hasn't been From the Secretary s Desk New Secretary Address! Our newly installed Lodge Secretary, Kyle Bradd, has a new official address. You can send a private to the Secretary at secretary@oceansidefreemason.org with any questions or concerns with Dues, Membership or other administrative inquiries. A reminder that your 2016 dues are due. Only 45% of the members have paid their dues. The amount is $ and there are two ways to pay. You can mail a check (personal, bank, or money order) to the lodge, P.O Box 68. Oceanside CA, address, ask your bank to send a check to the lodge. Our lodge does not want to lose any Brother because of financial hardship, so if you find yourself unable to afford the annual dues because of continued financial hardship, please send a letter or to the lodge and ask that your dues be remitted. - Kyle Bradd Food for the Mind A good story A young man passed a pawnbrokers shop. The money lender was standing in front of his shop, and the young man noted that he was wearing a large and beautiful Masonic emblem. After going on a whole block, apparently lost in thought, the young man turned back, stepped up to the pawnbroker, and addressed him: I see you re wearing a Masonic emblem. I m a Freemason too. It happens that I m desperately in need of $25 just now. I shall be able to repay it within ten days. You don t know me; but I wonder whether the fact that you are a Freemason and that I am a Freemason is sufficient to induce you to lend me the money on my personal note. The pawnbroker mentally apprised the young man, who was clean-cut, neat and well-dressed. After a moment s thought, he agreed to make the loan on the strength of the young man being a Freemason. Within a few days the young man repaid the loan as agreed and that ended the transaction. About four months later the young man was in a Lodge receiving the Entered Apprentice Degree; he had not really been a Mason when he borrowed the $25. After he had been admitted for the second section of the degree, the young man looked across the Lodge room and saw the pawnbroker from whom he had borrowed the $25. His face turned crimson and he became nervous and jittery. He wondered whether he had been recognized by the pawnbroker. Apparently not, so he planned at the first opportunity to leave the Lodge room and avoid his benefactor. As soon as the Lodge was closed he moved quickly for the door, but the pawnbroker had recognized the young man, headed him off and, to the young mans astonishment, approached him and greeted him with a smile and outstretched hand. 3
4 born. And, as touching the Temple, I hold and Profess We are Fellow Craftsmen--no more no " So it was ordered and so it was done, And the hewers of wood and the Masons of Mark With foc'sle hands of the Sidon run And Navy Lords from the Royal Ark, Came and sat down and were merry at mess The Quarries are hotter than Hiram's forge, No one is safe from the dog-whips' reach. It's mostly snowing up Lebanon gorge, And it's always blowing off Joppa beach; But once in so often, the messenger brings Solomon's mandate: "Forget these things! Brother to Beggars and Fellow to Kings, Companion of Princes-forget these things! Fellow Craftsman, forget these things!" Well, I see you weren t a Freemason after all when you borrowed that $25, the pawnbroker commented. The blood rushed to the young man s face as he stammered, No, I wasn t, but I wish you d let me explain. I had always heard that Freemasons were charitable and ready to aid a Brother in distress. When I passed your shop that day I didn t need that $25. I had plenty of money in my wallet, but when I saw the Masonic emblem you were wearing, I decided to find out whether the things Id heard about Freemasonry were true. You let me have the money on the strength of my being a Freemason, so I concluded that what I had heard about Masons was true, that they are charitable, that they do aid Brethren in distress. That made such a deep impression on me that I presented my petition to this Lodge and here I am. I trust that with this explanation you will forgive me for having lied to you. The pawnbroker responded; Don t let that worry you too much. I wasn t a Freemason when I let you have the money. I had no business wearing the Masonic emblem you saw. Another man had just borrowed some money on it, and it was so pretty that I put it on my lapel for a few minutes. I took it off the moment you left. I didn t want anyone else borrowing money on the strength of my being a Freemason. When you asked for that $25, I remembered what I had heard about Masons that they were honest, upright, and cared for their obligations promptly. It seemed to me that $25 wouldn t be too much to lose to learn if what Id heard was really true, so I lent you the money and you repaid it exactly as you said you would. That convinced me that what Id heard about Masons was true so I presented my petition to this Lodge. I was the candidate just ahead of you. 5 NEW LODGE APP Brethren, We have a new Lodge App! I am extremely excited to say that Oceanside 381 now has their very own private iphone/android app. As of today, about 10% of the lodge have installed the app on their devices and are using it readily. This is a great and private way for us to stay connected socially and for the business on the lodge. Please visit the below URL from your Apple or Android device, and you will be redirected to a page with instructions on how to install the app. PS - We are looking forward to a way to pay your dues electronically via the app in the near future! We will be further discussing this idea at the March Stated meeting. March Masonic Birthdays March Birthdays Full Name Raised Date Years MM Full Name Birth Date Michael A. Chapman 3/8/ Danny D.
