2 A Message From the Supervisor One nation indivisible Two hundred and twenty three years ago our founders established this nation, the United States of America. In the eloquent words of President Abraham Lincoln, we were conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal. Not everyone agreed with those words and it took a long and horrific civil war to finally establish the fact that we are, and forever will be, one nation indivisible, providing liberty and justice for everyone living on our soil. Not just for some, but for all! As we go through this year s elections on August 24 th and November 2 nd, let s be mindful that the men and women who participate in the political process want the same things as you and I. Every candidate that I have ever met has loved this nation. They may have differing opinions on how to solve our problems, but these differing opinions provide us with a choice to vote for those we think will best serve our interests. The men and women seeking office on this ballot deserve not only your interest and consideration they also deserve your respect. What they do is not easy. This year s primary ballot has 19 races, including contests for judges, city and county commissioners, as well as state legislative and federal contests. Finally, it is on this ballot, on the August 24 th Primary, that your two representatives to the Leon County School Board will be elected. There will be no school board election in November. Let s honor those whose sacrifices made it possible to have a choice in On August 24th, make sure your votes in! What s Your Status The Leon County Supervisor of Elections Office, in conjunction with the Florida Division of Elections, is providing a new website tool letting you easily check our records to make sure you re ready to vote. Look for the MY VOTER status icon on our homepage, leonvotes.org, to check your party, address, and if you have requested a mail ballot, you can check that too. 1

3 Voter s Bill of Rights Each registered voter in this state has the right to: 1. vote and have her or his vote accurately counted. 2. cast a vote if he or she is in line at the official closing of the polls in that county. 3. ask for and receive assistance in voting. 4. receive up to two replacement ballots if he or she makes a mistake prior to the ballot being cast. 5. an explanation if her or his registration or identity is in question. 6. if her or his registration or identity is in question, cast a provisional ballot. 7. Written instructions to use when voting, and, upon request, oral instructions in voting from elections officers. 8. vote free from coercion or intimidation by elections officers or any other person. 9. vote on a voting system that is in working condition and that will allow votes to be accurately cast. Voter Responsibilities Each registered voter in this state should: 1. Familiarize himself or herself with the candidates and issues. 2. Maintain with the office of the Supervisor of Elections a current address. 3. Know the location of his or her polling place and its hours of operation. 4. Bring proper identification to the polling station. 5. Familiarize himself or herself with the operation of the voting equipment in his or her precinct. 6. Treat precinct workers with courtesy. 7. Respect the privacy of other voters. 8. Report any problems or violations of election laws to the Supervisor of Elections. 9. Ask questions, if needed. 10. Make sure that his or her completed ballot is correct before leaving the polling station. PROVISIONAL BALLOT A provisional ballot is given: when the Precinct Clerk is unable to determine a voter s eligibility; a challenge against the voter s eligibility to vote has been filed; the voter s identification has not yet been verified by the State Division of Elections; the voter did not bring his/her voided absentee ballot to the precinct; the voter did not provide the required picture identification to vote; or the hours of voting have been extended by order of the Governor of Florida. The ballot given to the voter must correspond to the voter s residence address, so it is important to be at the proper polling location. The voter places her or his voted ballot inside a secrecy sleeve, and then inside the affidavit Provisional Ballot Envelope, provided by the Precinct Clerk. The voter must complete the voter s certificate portion of the envelope, remembering to sign the oath. Two more items must be signed by the provisional ballot voter: the Provisional Ballot Disclosure Form and the Florida Voter Registration Application. The Precinct Clerk will provide the voter with the copy of the Provisional Ballot Disclosure Form, as with this form the voter is able to visit the Supervisor of Elections web site and determine if her or his provisional ballot was accepted by the Leon County Canvassing Board. You should know that most provisional ballots are accepted by the Leon County Canvassing Board. Primary Election VOTE August 24,
