2 Let s Create EARLY ARRIVAL (before service) Have some upbeat music playing. Welcome children warmly. Have some simple toys available to make the environment welcoming. Teachers should take this time to engage in conversation with children as they sit to play with them. Ask them about their week, school, and home. Begin to establish relationships. BEGIN CLASS (service time) Introduce yourself and your assistants. Before the discussion questions, PRAY that the Lord will bless your time together. Have a set of supplies for yourself to demonstrate as you explain. SUPPLIES per child Gift print-out SUPPLIES to share Crayons, glue stick Embellishments (pompoms, bows, tissue paper, etc.) Pipe cleaner or ribbon PREP it : : : instructions 1 Hand out supplies and have the children decorate their printouts with the embellishments. 2 When they are finished, have them roll their paper up and tie a ribbon around it. CONNECTit CONNECT it : : : SAY The verse on the papers says, Every good and perfect gift is from above. Have the children take these rolled-up papers home to give to someone who may need a little reminder that God is the giver all that is good. 4 Let s Talk Bible BIBLE STORY : : : Jesus Heals a Man Born Blind John 9:1 12 BE PREPARED Read the Bible story and study the background information at home. Before you begin the lesson, in your own words, tell the appropriate background information for your class age group. BACKGROUND information : : : SAY IT in your own words Many people who thought themselves to be devoted followers of God and the Law were really very removed from the truth. Jesus wanted to correct their twisted beliefs and point people back to the truth of the scriptures. Many of the things Jesus said or did clashed with what had become the common way of thinking. One of these thoughts was that a person who suffered did so because he was being punished for a sin he or his parents had committed. As Jesus and His disciples were walking along one day, they came across a man who had been blind from birth. His disciples wanted to know why the man was blind. Did he sin or did his parent s sin? They asked. Jesus answered neither. God allowed this man to be born blind so that one day Jesus would come along and show God s goodness and miraculous power. Let s go to the Bible and find out exactly what happened. PREP it : : : props and characters 1. Select a few children to act out portions of the story as you read it. If you don t have enough children, they can play multiple roles in the different sections of the story. These are the characters.» Jesus» Blind man» Disciples 2. If you are able, bring the following from home to enhance the story.» A bowl for water READ Bible Story : : : JOHN 9:1 12 As Jesus was walking along, he saw a man who had been born blind. (Jesus and His disciples, walk and stop at the blind man.) His followers asked him, Teacher, whose sin caused this man to be born blind his own sin or his parents sin? 5 Jesus answered, It is not this man s sin or his parents sin that made him be blind. This man was born blind so that God s power could be shown in him. While it is daytime, we must continue doing the work of the One who sent me. The night is coming. And no one can work at night. While I am in the world, I am the light of the world. (Jesus, say, Watch this. ) After Jesus said this, he spit on the ground and made some mud with it. He put the mud on the man s eyes. (Jesus, pretend to spit and make a mud pie to put on the blind man.) Then he told the man, (Jesus, say) Go and wash in the Pool of Siloam. (Siloam means Sent.) So the man went to the pool. He washed and came back. And he was able to see. (Blind man, go to the bowl of water and rinse, then jump for joy and shout, I can see! I can see! ) CONNECTIT MEMORYVERSE CONNECT it : : : SAY Sometimes there aren t any reasons why bad things happen. We live in a sinful world and things just happen. But we do know where good comes from God. Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows. James 1:17 When God finished creating the world, God saw all that he had made, and it was very good (Genesis 1:31). It didn t stay very good because Satan tempted Adam and Eve to disobey God and sin. Although we have bad things now, there is also good. God s goodness doesn t change and when we do experience good things (such as a beautiful sunrise or a miraculous healing), we should know that they came from God.
