In Catholic liturgical tradition, The Solemnity of Epiphany, commemorated on January 6, celebrates the visit of the Magi to the Christ Child. The Eve of Epiphany (the night of January 5) is popularly known as Twelfth Night. The season for King Cake extends from the end of the Twelve Days of Christmas (Twelfth Night and Epiphany Day), up until Mardi Gras, or "Fat Tuesday;" the day before the start of Lent. LEGO Club Thanks to a recent visit from robotics engineer, Patrick Gaidos, our Lego Club will receive a $500 grant from ExxonMobil to purchase a brand new robot system for competition next year! This award was featured in last month's ExxonMobil newsletter. In the United States, Carnival is traditionally observed in the Southeastern region of the country, particularly in New Orleans, Saint Louis, Mobile, Pensacola, Galveston, and other towns and cities of the Mississippi Gulf Coast. In this region, the King Cake is closely associated with Mardi Gras traditions and is served throughout the Carnival season, which lasts from Epiphany Eve to Fat Tuesday. The King Cake tradition is thought to have been brought to New Orleans from France in Now, as part of the celebration, it is tradition to bake a cake (King Cake) in honor of the three kings. The official colors of Mardi Gras, created in 1872 by the Krewe of Rex, are purple for justice, green for faith, and gold for power. 3

8 Helping our children grow in their Catholic faith. January 2015 Sacred Heart Catholic School Susan Harris, Principal New Year s family faith resolutions St. John Neumann St. John Neumann is credited with developing the American Catholic school system as we know it today. Born in what is now the Czech Republic in 1811, St. John was ordained at age 25, and at age 29 joined the Redemptorists, a religious order. At age 41, he became bishop of Philadelphia. He recruited teaching orders and turned city parochial schools into diocesan schools, greatly increasing the number of students. He also built more than 89 churches, several hospitals and orphanages. J-O-Y True and lasting joy comes when we love Jesus, take care of others as he asked, and give ourselves totally to him. Help children find lasting JOY J-Jesus, O-Others, Y- Yourself. The first end I propose in our daily work is to do the will of God; secondly, to do it in the manner he wills it; and thirdly, to do it because it is his will. St. Elizabeth Ann Seton The New Year offers us a new beginning with opportunities to change and grow when we make and keep resolutions. A good way to teach children the importance of New Year s resolutions is to turn setting them into a family activity. Try these ideas for faith-based New Year s resolutions: Make it a family activity. Take turns telling what you each like about your relationship with God and what you would like to change. It may help if parents demonstrate. Then, using their comments, write down a brief list of goals for every person. Age appropriate resolutions get kept. What each child needs to resolve Our first parents received grace as a gift for all of humankind. Their sin the Original Sin cost them, and us, that grace. We inherited their sin and the tendency to keep sinning. Sin separates us from God. While on Earth, Jesus forgave sins, depends on the child. Gently steer youngsters toward age appropriate prayer times, works of charity (chores, contributions to the poor box or parish collection), or Scripture reading (perhaps reading from a children s Bible). Limit the number of resolutions so they are doable throughout the year. Post each person s resolutions in a prominent place in the home. Be a role model. Children of any age will understand the value of working to grow in faith if parents lead. As a family, periodically review resolution progress but make it a time of encouragement, not punishment. Praise effort. The best part is you are working together to grow in faith and love of God. That has its own reward. Why do Catholics believe in forgiveness? and gave this power to his Apostles so the Church can continue to be his forgiving presence throughout time (John 20:23). He created Baptism and the Sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation so we can always seek forgiveness. Copyright 2015 Success Publishing & Media, LLC

9 Our Christmas Season ends with the Baptism of the Lord but that doesn t mean the celebration has to end. Keep the joy of faith alive throughout the month with fun ideas like these: January 1 Solemnity of Mary, the Holy Mother of God. After attending Mass on this Holyday of Obligation, color or paint a picture of Mary holding the baby Jesus to hang in your home. Mount the picture on colored paper to make it festive and special. Fun with faith in January January 2015 Page 2 January 4 Epiphany of the Lord. Go star gazing to celebrate the Epiphany. Help children find the brightest stars in the sky. Discuss how the Wise Men might have felt while they were following a star and traveling to meet the newborn king. January 11 Baptism of the Lord. Share pictures and keepsakes of each child s (and parent s) Baptism. If you have their Baptismal candles, light them and repeat Baptismal promises together. January 31 St. John Bosco. Learn to juggle like St. John Bosco, who dedicated his life to children. Mark 1:14-20, Follow the Leader Just about every child in America has played some version of Follow the Leader. In the game, a leader is chosen and players follow him wherever he goes and do whatever he does. We stomp through puddles, climb over fences, swing from trees, all to stay in the game. Follow the Leader may be a game but we follow leaders in real life, too. Every day we are faced with making a choice of which leader we will follow at school, at work, in sports, January 21 St. Agnes (258). At a young age, St. Agnes pledged chastity for Jesus. Reportedly she was exposed as a Christian by a suitor whom she refused to marry. When she wouldn t renounce her faith, she was executed. January 24 - St. Francis de Sales (1622). As bishop of Geneva, St. Francis enriched the faith of others by his writings and works. His famous work, Introduction to the Devout Life, is as applicable today as it was in his day. January 28 St. Thomas Aquinas (1274). St. Thomas Aquinas was a at church. We must be sure to choose a leader who will lead us in the right direction. Then we have to decide how much of what a leader asks are we willing to do. What can a parent do? Jesus chose twelve special people to be his closest followers and he became their leader. They went where he told them and did what he asked. Jesus is still calling people to follow him today. In fact, he has called each of us to follow him. Help children understand what it means to go where Jesus tells us and to do what he asks. great Catholic theologian whose writings on the faith earned him the titles, Doctor of the Church, and Angelic Doctor. His works are still fundamental to Christian education today. January 31 St. John Bosco (1888). John Bosco was ordained in Turin, served as chaplain in a hospice for working girls, and opened the Oratory of St. Francis de Sales for boys. He later founded the Salesian Order dedicated to education and mission work. We lost our Kokie this week. He was a quirky miniature poodle we rescued when the girls were little. He followed us everywhere. A victim of abuse as a pup, he was three years old when we got him and almost fifteen when he died. Tessa took Kokie s death hard, and asked if she would see him again in Heaven. I told her that I didn t know; dogs don t have immortal souls like we do. But I do know that we are destined for Heaven and that it will be more amazing than we can imagine. We will have all we need to be happy. St. Paul said, "What no eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor the heart of man conceived, what God has prepared for those who love him (1 Corinthians 2:9). So, if we need Kokie to be happy, I believe he will be there with us.
