11 Page 1 1 of22 January 2017 Category Title Community Outreach and Social Justice This is who we are as a Local Ministry Unit: We are currently doing the following in community outreach and social justice: The neighbourhood around Knox is multicultural with aboriginal, refugee, and new immigrant families It is diverse, family-oriented, resilient, and industrious It also has high needs with low incomes, high unemployment, addictions, and other challenges Located in the core ofthe city in the Central Park neighborhood, Knox has been the driving force behind a number of Community Development/Community Economic Development (CD/CED) initiatives that connect community members from various nationalities and faith backgrounds, and contribute to the improvement of their socioeconomic and cultural lives The church building, hosting numerous celebrations like weddings, sociocultural festivities, concerts, Canadian Citizenship ceremonies, disaster relief fund-raisers, and lectures on topics related to the public good and socialjustice, has been a hub for CD/CED The projects include: The Central Market for Global Families engaged, private citizens and three levels ofgovemment to invest 56 million in the redevelopment ofcentral Park, which used to be the most dangerous place in the city with intensive drugs dealing, street gang activity, and homicides The Park has become a friendly community gathering place since completion ofthe work in 2012 The Rainbow Community Gardens, initiated in 2008 by a group of new immigrants, got support from the church to reach out to the City of Winnipeg and the University of Manitoba to access two acres ofland to host the garden Knox provided the tools and resources that were needed to launch the project Starting with 16 immigrant families from nine different countries in 2008, the Garden has grown to serve 3 12 families It has become not only a chance to grow their own healthy, exotic foods at a low cost, but also to interact among themselves and with Canadian born community members, sharing cultural practices, improving their English, and avoiding social isolation The Knox Employment Entry (KEE) Program, a program offered by Knox, is a non-profit agency that assists clients in attaining entry level employment with a wide variety ofemployers in Winnipeg They match the right person with the right employer with no charge to the participant or employer for these services The Knox Food Bank, a depot for Winnipeg Harvest run by Knox volunteers, provides food to 50 families from the neighbourhood every second Tuesday of the month Knox has been also involved in social justice in partnership with local community organizations with vested interest in social justice and human rights The church has been a venue for a series of public lectures with international speakers on topics relating to social justice We have a specific goal as follows: To work closely with the wider community as a way of demonstrating we are all part ofthe family ofgod anddeserving ofgod s love and care
