1 EASTER CELEBRATION OF THE RESURRECTION April 16, :00 am Worship
2 EASTER April 16, :00 am Sunrise Worship Welcome to all who are worshipping with us. Easter is the oldest and greatest of the Christian festivals. It has always been regarded as the chief and most joyous of the observances of the church, commemorating the resurrection of Christ and the restoration of life to the world which sin had ruined. The opening voluntary is the call to silent meditation and preparation for worship. As we enter a holy space and time this morning, please silence your cell phones. Following worship, you are invited for a time of conversation and refreshments in Williams Hall. PRELUDE *CALL TO WORSHIP This new day we seek to encounter the Living Christ. With bright eyes, let us search. This new day we seek to understand the Living Christ. With engaged minds, let us ponder. This new day we seek to be moved by the Living Christ. With compassionate hearts, let us embrace. This new day we will respond to the Living Christ. With simple devotion, let us follow. This new day we will serve the Living Christ. With humble hearts, let us act. This new day we will praise the Living Christ. With bold voices, let us sing out. *SONG In Christ Alone Keith Getty & Stuart Townend 1. In Christ alone my hope is found; He is my light, my strength, my song; This cornerstone, this solid ground, Firm through the fiercest drought and storm. What heights of love, what depths of peace, When fears are stilled, when strivings cease! My comforter, my all in all Here in the love of Christ I stand. 3. There in the ground His body lay, Light of the world by darkness slain; Then bursting forth in glorious day, Up from the grave He rose again! And as He stands in victory, Sin s curse has lost its grip on me; For I am His and He is mine Bought with the precious blood of Christ. 2. In Christ alone, Who took on flesh, Fullness of God in helpless babe! This gift of love and righteousness, Scorned by the ones He came to save. Till on that cross as Jesus died, The Love of God was magnified; For ev ry sin on Him was laid Here in the death of Christ I live. 4. No guilt in life, no fear in death This is the pow r of Christ in me; From life s first cry to final breath, Jesus commands my destiny. No pow r of hell, no scheme of man, Can ever pluck me from His hand; Till He returns or calls me home Here in the pow r of Christ I ll stand. [2] *Those who are able, please stand.
3 CONFESSION Holy God, We have known you, we have seen you, our hands have touched you, yet we continue to turn from you. You have given us new life through your Son Jesus Christ and we have rejected it. Silent confession Risen Lord, Use us as instruments in your broken world, forgive us for turning from you, and instill in us a spirit of new life, which seeks your Kingdom and the renewal of all creation. Amen. ASSURANCE OF PARDON WELCOME AND CONCERNS OF THE PEOPLE LISTEN AND REFLECT Join and sing if you feel so led. A stanza will be sung after each reading. READING Acts 10:39-43 SONG Death in His Grave John Mark Mcmillan 1. Though the earth cried out for blood Satisfied her hunger was Billows calmed on raging seas For the souls of them she craved Sun and moon from balcony Turned their head in disbelief Precious love would taste the sting Disfigured and disdained On Friday a thief, On Sunday a king Laid down in grief, But awoke with the keys Of hell on that day, First born of the slain The man Jesus Christ laid, Death in his grave READING Colossians 3: So three days in darkness slept The morning sun of righteousness But rose to shame the throes of death And overturn his rule Now daughters and the sons of them Would pay not their dues again The debt of blood they owed was rent When the day rolled anew On Friday a thief, On Sunday a king Laid down in grief, But awoke with the keys Of hell on that day, First born of the slain The man Jesus Christ laid, Death in his grave [3]
4 READING 2 Corinthians 5: He has cheated hell And seated us above the fall In desperate places he paid our wages One time, once and for all On Friday a thief, On Sunday a king Laid down in grief, But awoke with the keys Of hell on that day, First born of the slain The man Jesus Christ laid, Death in his grave PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION NEW TESTAMENT READING Matthew 28:1-10 The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. SERMON Eclipsing The Empty Tomb Andrew Esqueda *AFFIRMATION OF FAITH In life and in death we belong to God. We trust in Jesus Christ, fully human and fully God. And in this broken and fearful world the Spirit gives us courage to pray without ceasing, to witness among all peoples to Christ as Lord and Savior. With believers in every time and place, we rejoice as Mary did on the first Easter morning, that nothing in life or in death can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. Adapted from the Brief Statement of Faith PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen. *SONG Jesus Christ Is Risen Today lasst uns erfreuen 1. Jesus Christ is risen today, Alleluia! Our triumphant holy day, Alleluia! Who did once upon the cross, Alleluia! Suffer to redeem our loss, Alleluia! 2. Hymns of praise then let us sing, Alleluia! Unto Christ, our heavenly king, Alleluia! Who endured the cross and grave, Alleluia! Sinners to redeem and save, Alleluia! 3. But the pains which he endured, Alleluia! Our salvation have procured; Alleluia! Now above the sky he s king, Alleluia! Where the angels ever sing, Alleluia! 4. Sing we to our God above, Alleluia! Praise eternal as God s love; Alleluia! Praise our God, ye heavenly host, Alleluia! Father, son, and holy ghost. Alleluia! [4]
