Junior Curriculum This curriculum for Bible study is for elementary age learners. Junior is the curricula for learners who will usually be in fifth and sixth grades, ages ten and eleven. It is based on the concept of discovery learning. This means the teacher is a guide who will lead the learners to discover Bible truth through individual investigation. The purpose of the material is to help learners develop thinking skills to discover the meaning of basic Bible principles and make an application in their daily lives. It is an exciting endeavor one Jesus used! The Junior Learner s Manual contains four perforated pages per lesson. These pages may be given to the learners as single work sheets or as an entire lesson. The first page of each lesson is the Bible story. It illustrates the Bible Principle and Lesson Objective. The Bible story may be read in the classroom interactively by the learners or by the teacher. The second, third and fourth pages of each lesson relate to classroom activity. The activities reinforce the Bible story and Bible Principle. Every lesson is designed to fit a thirty to forty minute class period. The teacher can use the lesson guide to pace the classroom activity to fit the time frame of the local church by adapting the activities to the need. A Devotional section is included in the Junior Teacher s Guide. Understand the Lesson Objective, Focus the Bible Principle and Know God s Word sections are brief commentaries designed to help the teacher prepare for the lesson. Additional Scriptures are provided for further study. Classroom activity begins with the Attention section and ends with the Final Activity. A suggested time is given for each activity. The teacher should watch the time but be flexible, adjusting the time of each activity as the needs of the learners demand it. It is more important for learners to understand the Bible Principle than to fill the allotted time for the activity. The classroom objective should be for learners to understand the Bible Principle and apply it in their lives. 2

Lesson Outline The Lesson Outline is an explanation for each division included in the lesson. H Lesson Objective states the purpose for studying the lesson from the teacher s point of view. The Lesson Objective comments help clarify the objective and serve as a guideline for lesson activities. H Bible Principle is the focus of Bible truth used in the lesson. The teacher will state the Bible Principle several times throughout the lesson. This repetition will help the learners focus the truth of the Bible Principle in their minds. H Parallel Passage includes some memory verses. Memory Verse Aids are also given in each lesson to help learners in memorizing Scriptures. H Attention begins classroom activity. This section suggests welcoming learners and directing them to the learning center. H Prayer time is suggested to focus on prayer requests learners may have and to ask God s blessings for learners to accomplish the objective designed for the lesson. H Lesson Set is to be used immediately before the Bible story. It includes an activity designed to focus the minds of the learners to receive the Bible Principle and a brief discussion to lay a foundation on which learners may build an understanding of the Bible story. H Know God s Word section gives additional information for an in-depth study of the Bible story. The Bible Story is printed in full text in the learner s manual. Junior Learner s Manual activity pages are planned to be used immediately following the Bible story. Suggested questions are given in the Ask sections of the teacher s guide and possible answers for the questions are given in italics. H Activities section includes three sections. Learner s Manual Activities are three pages learners complete in the classroom. The Final Activity concludes the lesson and helps learners make life application. It summarizes the lesson and focuses on the truth of the Parallel Passage. During the activity the teacher can determine whether the learners have understood the Bible Principle and the Bible story. He may clarify any misconceptions learners have made. During this time learners are encouraged to memorize the memory verse. H Life Application states the purpose for studying the lesson from the learner s point of view. The teacher may prefer to keep learners copies of the Junior Learner s Manual in the classroom rather than sending them home with the learners. Only those pages may be removed which the teacher wants learners to use at home. The learner is better prepared to continue the application process in daily life after he has the Bible Principle and the Bible story planted in his mind and heart. Daily Bible 3

readings as a guide for daily life application are included on activity page three. The ABC s of salvation are included in each lesson for the teacher to present the plan of salvation to the learners. A Learning Center is an area of the room where materials relating to the unit of study may be set up for exploration by the learners to promote discovery learning and understanding. Bulletin Board materials and suggestions are included in the Junior Visuals and on each unit page of the teacher s guide. Margins in the teacher s guide contain information which relates to the sections, activities, teaching tips, Junior Visuals and illustrations. Blank spaces may be used for study or instructional notations. 4

Junior Visual Aids, Theme Banner, Item 1 Winter Quarter, Junior Visual Aids, Unit 1 Worship Poster, Item 2 Winter Quarter, Junior Visual Aids, Unit 2 Prayer Poster, Item 3 Winter Quarter, Junior Visual Aids, Unit 3 Stewardship Poster, Item 7 Item 7 Winter Quarter, Introduction to Winter Quarter Worship, Prayer and Stewardship Theme The theme for the winter quarter is built upon the nature of worship, prayer and service directed to the true and living God. Such lessons are needed to help learners know God is a personal being, not an impersonal, invisible force within the universe. Learners are encouraged to accept Jesus as their Savior and be personally involved in a living relationship of worshiping God, praying to Him and serving Him. UNIT 1 Elements of Worship The objective for this unit is that learners will identify elements of acceptable worship. They will explore worship as expressions of praise to God and participate in such praise in the classroom. They will consider principles of celebration in worship in the local church based on the story of the celebration when the prodigal son returned home. They will consider spiritual expressions in worship. They will examine plans of giving and determine which is the best form of worship. UNIT 2 Elements of Prayer The objective for this unit is that learners will identify elements of acceptable prayer. They will learn the nature of acceptable prayer includes praise, faith and forgiveness. They will be encouraged to pray daily. They will examine the six things Jesus prayed in John 17 as an example of praying for others. UNIT 3 Elements of Stewardship The objective for this unit is that learners will identify elements of acceptable stewardship involved in their own service to God. They will develop a plan of systematic giving based on New Testament principles through one of the Lord s local churches. They will evaluate reasons they should be stewards of their own bodies as the temple of the Holy Spirit. They will evaluate their personal position as church members and the responsibilities connected with their membership. 5

Junior Teacher s Guide Winter Quarter, Unit 1 Elements of Worship UNIT OBJECTIVE: Learners will identify elements of acceptable worship. Lesson Title Bible Principle Bible Story Parallel Passage 1 Worship Is Praise Express praise. Revelation 4:1-11 Revelation 1:5-8 2 Worship Is Celebration Celebrate in worship. Luke 15:11-32 Luke 15:3-7 3 Worship Is Giving Give in worship. Matthew 2: Corinthians 9: Worship Is Spiritual Expression Celebrate in spirit. Acts 2:1-47 John 4:1-26 (in Church) LEARNING CENTER Learners may use the learning center to explore the elements of acceptable worship. Display the Worship poster (Item 2) from the Junior Visuals on a bulletin board or wall in the learning center. Set up the learning center by mounting the Theme Banner, Item 1, above a bulletin board or on a wall. Encourage learners to cut suitable pictures from the magazines and outdated literature that will represent the different aspects of worship. Pin or tape them around the Worship poster. Set up a display of natural objects such as seashell, rocks and potted plants. Encourage learners to write on Place the following materials on a table: Bibles pencils 3 x 5 index cards objects such as seashells, rocks, potted plants religious magazines, outdated literature scissors tape or pushpins hymnbooks 3'' x 5'' index cards thoughts of worship to God as the great Creator. They may fold the cards in half and stand them in the display area or pin them to the bulletin board around the Wor ship Poster. Let learners choose one worship song from the hymnbook each week. Appoint a song leader and have all learners sing the song together as an expression of praise to God. Encourage learners to use a pencil eraser or some other nonmarking object to find their way through the maze to reach Jesus on Item 9, Unit 1 Salvation Poster. (Nonmarking will permit all learners an opportunity to use the maze.) Take time to talk to the learners about the way of salvation presented on the poster. Personally counsel with any unsaved learner whom the Holy Spirit convicts of his need of the Savior. 6

Lesson December 3, Worship Is Praise Revelation 4:1-11 Lesson Theme: Creatures in Heaven worship God. Quarterly Theme: Worship, Prayer and Stewardship Unit 1 Theme: Elements of Worship Bible Story The throne in Heaven Revelation 4:1-11 John looked into Heaven. He saw God sitting on a throne. When John looked at God, he saw a bright, fiery light. He described worship in Heaven. Four angelic creatures continually said, Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, which was, and is, and is to come. Twenty-four elders wearing golden crowns were seated around God s throne. The elders fell down before God in worship. They gave God their crowns. Worship always continues in Heaven. God is a Spirit and must be worshiped in spirit. He is only seen with spiritual eyes. He deserves praise in worship because of who He is. He is the only true and living God. He deserves worship because of the things He has done. He is the Creator of all things. He gave His only Son to redeem the world. God deserves worship because of what He can do. He can save anyone who will repent and believe in Jesus. All saved people should praise God in worship daily. 7

DEVOTIONAL: They Sung a New Song, Revelation 5:6-12. The focus of worship in this heavenly scene is the slain Lamb. The Lamb is Jesus who died for the sins of all people in the world. The Lamb stood in the center near the throne of God with the angelic creatures and the twenty-four elders around Him. The Lamb took a book from the hand of God who was seated on the throne. The angelic creatures and the elders fell down before the Lamb in worship. The saved people in Heaven sang a new song. Their song was one of praise to the Lamb for redeeming them by His blood. They praised Him for making them kings and priests. They praised Him because they would soon reign with Him on the earth. The angels joined in choral speaking, saying with a loud voice that the Lamb was worthy to receive worship. Lesson Objective: Learners will apply principles of worship. H UNDERSTAND THE LESSON OBJECTIVE Worship acknowledges that God is worthy of worship. He is the only true and living God. Focus on God in worship. To focus requires one to direct his attention away from everything and everyone around him and to center his thoughts on God, who He is, what He has done, what He can do and what He has promised to do. Worship God in spirit. Spiritual worship is rooted in love for God which overflows from a grateful heart. Worship God in thoughts, words and actions. To recognize God s worthiness of worship stimulates expressions of praise. Bible Principle: Worship is an expression of praise to God. H FOCUS THE BIBLE PRINCIPLE Expressions of praise can be in thoughts or meditation, in speech or testimony and in actions both publicly and privately. Songs may be a way to express praise if they are centered on God instead of the deeds of men. Reading the words of writers inspired by His Spirit can be an expression of praise. Making the words of David and the other psalmists personal can be an expression of praise. Meditation on God s Word will often result in thoughts of praise directed to God. The testimonial segment of the service can be a time to express praise to God. Memory Verse: Revelation 1:8 chalkboard or marker board chalk or erasable markers Memory Aid H PARALLEL PASSAGE Worthy of Praise, Revelation 1:5-8. Memory Verse: I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, Revelation 1:8. Use Key Words. Write the verse on a chalkboard or marker board. Read the phrases as written. Call attention to the underlined key words. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, Revelation 1:8. Encourage learners to memorize Revelation 1:8 that they may remember why God is worthy of their praise. The Parallel Passage focuses the reader s attention on Jesus Christ and His worthiness of praise for what He has done and will yet do for saved people. The Parallel Passage is found on page 3 in the learner s manual and is dealt with in the teacher s guide under Final Activity on page 11. Welcome Learners Record Attendance stars or stickers 3 x 5 index cards H ATTENTION q Arrive early. Cheerfully greet and welcome each learner at the door, calling him by name. Let each one know you are glad he came. q Have learners record attendance on page 2 in learners manuals. This page may be removed from the manual and displayed in the classroom. q Direct learners to the learning center. (See Unit 1, page 6.) Encourage learners to explore the elements of acceptable worship. Encourage learners to write thoughts of worship to God as the great Creator on 3'' x 5'' cards, fold the cards in half and stand them near the object to which 8

they relate in the natural objects display area or pin them on the bulletin board around the Worship poster. Use outdated literature and magazines to find pictures to represent different aspects of worship (praise, prayer, giving and so on). Attach pictures around Worship poster on the bulletin board. Sing a worship song together as an expression of praise to God. H PRAYER q Ask for prayer requests. q Lead in prayer, remembering all prayer requests made. Ask God s blessings for learners to know how to apply principles of worship. TIP Prayer You may want to put all the memory verses in a flip chart or on flash cards to use during the quarter. flashlight H LESSON SET (5 minutes) q Ask two volunteers to help you. Have one learner stand in an open area of the floor with his arm outstretched, open hand, palm downward and fingers spread apart. Give the other learner a flashlight. Have the learner focus the light on the hand of the other learner from about twelve inches above it causing a shadow on the floor. Ask: What causes a shadow to form? (Light striking a solid object.) Ask: What does the presence of a shadow tell you? (The presence of the shadow indicates the reality is nearby; it is connected to the real thing.) Ask: If you could only see the shadow of s hand, what characteristics could you identify that would help you know what object cast the shadow? (The shadow is an outline of a hand; five fingers; hand connected to an arm.) Say: Praise we offer to God is like a shadow. A shadow is an expression of something that exists, a real thing. A shadow points to the real thing. A shadow is an expression of the real thing. If light strikes a chair, the shadow does not look like a man. It looks like a chair. The shadow is always an expression of the real thing. Worship is an expression of praise to God. Acceptable praise must be an expression of the reality of God. Like a connecting shadow, praise must show God s character, His reality. We praise Him with words that reflect His character such as great, good, merciful and loving. Discussion: How is praise to God like a shadow? TIP Distance of the light above the hand is important. Try it yourself before class time. H KNOW GOD S WORD The pattern of the Tabernacle God gave to Moses was a reflection of His throne room in Heaven. He who looked upon the Tabernacle from the outside saw only a drab tent. But he who had the privilege to enter it saw a different scene. He saw a radiant splendor of light reflecting on golden objects and replicas of cherubim with outstretched wings embroidered in scarlet, purple and blue on the veil guarding the Holy Place where God s presence dwelled. The Tabernacle and its system of offerings was a shadow of the reality in Heaven where God is worshiped by all present and declared to be worthy of their praise. The ark was behind the veil. The lid of the ark was the mercy seat where God received the blood of atonement shed for the sins of His people. The outstretched wings of the cherubim covered the mercy seat. Bible Study For Additional Study: Genesis 8:20-22; Psalm 136:1-26; Lamentations 3:22-27; 2 Peter 3:10; Revelation 21:1. LEARNER S MANUAL Bible Story (10-15 minutes) The Throne in Heaven, Revelation 4:

q Read The Throne in Heaven on page 3 of the Junior Learner s Manual. q Show Church teaching picture in the Junior Visuals while asking the questions. Visual 1-1 Bibles pencils Ask: Why do the angelic creatures and the twenty-four elders worship God? (Because He is holy, eternal; worthy to be worshiped; created all things.) Ask: Why did the twenty-four elders fall down before God in worship? (They showed Him reverence; they showed He was worthy of worship.) Ask: What does the attitude of the angelic creatures and the twenty-four elders show us about worshiping God with praise in church? (We should praise Him with a humble attitude; we should praise Him reverently.) Say: Jesus has provided a special place for church members to assemble together to worship God. The place is the church building. We meet to praise God in worship. Praise is one part of worship God accepts. He welcomes and receives our worship in praise when we sing about Him, talk about the wondrous things He has done in the past, the things He did for us today and the things He has promised to do for us in the future. H ACTIVITIES LEARNER S MANUAL ACTIVITIES (10-15 minutes) TIP My God Read Bible verses, make lists and finish sentence. Lead to Bible Principle conclusion. Explain that praise is an expression of approval, commendation, admiration or exaltation of God. Worshiping God Write words and thoughts of praise and how to use God s Word in praise. Lead to Bible Principle conclusion. H My God (page 4, learner s manual) q Have learners read the Bible verses, make lists and finish the sentence on page 4 in the Junior Learner s Manual. Lead learners to share their answers to the questions. Ask: How can we praise God? (Psalm 111:1, with my whole heart; Psalm 71:8, mouth; Psalm 66:8, voice; Psalm 145:10, works; Psalm 7:17, according to his righ teousness.) Ask: In the reading above what three things make God worthy of your praise? (He knows all things omniscience; He is present everywhere omnipresent; He is allpowerful omnipotent.) Ask: Why does God deserve your praise? (Because He loves me, protects me, watches over me, made me special.) q Lead learners to the Bible Principle conclusion. Say: (Bible Principle ) Worship is an expression of praise to God. Worship is the focus of one s attention on God s worth. Worship becomes praise when we center our thoughts on God. We can think about God when we are here at church, at home with our families, looking up at the stars in a night sky or alone in our beds. H Worshiping God (page 5, learner s manual) q Have learners write words and thoughts of praise and how they can use God s Word to praise Him. Let learners share their thoughts. Ask: What words of praise did you write? (Words of praise may include God s moral attributes: goodness, holiness, justice, patience, loving, merciful and truthful.) Ask: What thoughts of praise did you write? (Thoughts may include God s names and titles: Almighty God, everlasting God, eternal God, living God, Heavenly Father, Creator, Shepherd and Savior.) Ask: How can you use God s Word to praise Him? (By reading it; by memorizing it; by thinking about what the Bible says about God.) q Lead learners to the Bible Principle conclusion. Say: We can praise God with words of our choice. We can also praise God with His own words He has spoken to us in the Bible. (Bible Principle ) Worship is an expression of praise to God. When we speak words of praise to God, we will choose words that honor Him because He is worthy of our worship. 10

H Praise Word Find (page 6, learner s manual) q As learners locate the words in the puzzle, let them share thoughts. Ask: How does God convict? (His Holy Spirit.) Ask: What are two names for God found in this puzzle? (Alpha and Omega.) Praise Word Find Solve the word find. Lead to Bible Principle conclusion. q Lead learners to the Bible Principle conclusion. Say: We praise God as we worship. At school when you show kindness to your classmates, God will be praised. (Bible Principle ) Worship is an expression of praise to God. You will find opportunities for worship as you seek them in your daily activities. FINAL ACTIVITY (5 minutes) q Read the Parallel Passage, Worthy of Praise, Revelation 1:5-8. q Direct Choral Reading, found in the Junior Visuals. Direct the Choral Reading in this manner: 1. Familiarize yourself with the structure of the reading. 2. Choose three learners for solo parts in the reading. 3. Display the visual at a comfortable level for the learners to read. 4. Encourage learners to be expressive in the reading. 5. Use a pencil as a pointer to indicate when each part is to be read. q Recite Revelation 1:8. See page 8 in teacher s guide for Memory Aid idea. Include recitation in class. Encourage continued memorization in the following week. Parallel Passage: Revelation 1:5-8 Read Parallel Passage. Lead Choral Reading. Recite Revelation 1:8. Visual 1-2 Say: Worship is an expression of praise to God. We worship God with thoughts, words and actions. Let us remember God only accepts sincere worship from our hearts. H LIFE APPLICATION Say: Praise God this week by reading the Daily Bible Readings. The habit of reading the Bible daily will show you how to praise God for His mercy and goodness. Your love for God will show in your thoughts, actions and speech as you grow in your faith. If you have not accepted Christ as your Savior, do it now Admit, Believe and Confess. Live for Christ each day to show others what Christ will do for them. Life Application I will always remember to exalt God in my thoughts, speech and actions. ABC s of Salvation Admit you are a sinner. Believe Jesus is the Son of God. Confess Jesus as your Savior. 11
