MEANING-CENTERED TEACHING WHAT DOES THIS MEAN TO ME AS A TEACHER? As a Christian educator, you have the responsibility to present the most important subject matter that children receive in their learning experience. You will be introducing them to God and to the plan of salvation through His Son, Jesus Christ. It is imperative that your teaching be meaningful, understandable and applicable to groups with which you Take advantage of a child s curiosity to bring personal meaning to God s Word in relation to the world around him. work. Using the meaning-centered curriculum will improve the understanding and retention of your learners. In addition, they will be able to transfer knowledge from one learning level to the next. MEANING-CENTERED CURRICULUM 1. Explain the meaning of Bible verses. 2. Elaborate beyond the words written in the teacher s guide. 3. Involve the learner actively in the lesson. 4. Connect existing knowledge to new knowledge. 5. Provide opportunities for learners to interact with other learners to discuss God s Word and how to apply it to their own daily experiences. LESSON ORGANIZER Teacher s Weekly Checklist q EXAMINE each section of the lesson q READ and meditate on the Scripture q PRAY for each learner and his family q CHOOSE activities best suited to your group q ORGANIZE q CONTACT special guests if necessary q PREPARE or assign the Devotional 2
How Do I Use This Book? 1. Review the Quarterly Theme. The theme of this quarter s lessons centers around God Leads His People in the Path of Goodness. Learners need to be reminded that God will lead them as He led His people in the Bible. 2. Focus on Meaning-Centered Lessons. Active involvement of learners is essential in the learning process. More preparation is required for this type of teaching, but the results are eternal. The sit and get style of teaching is no longer adequate for today s learners. 3. Beginner Teacher s Guide. There is one objective for the lesson. The activities are consistent with this learning objective. 4. Beginner Learner s Manual. The learner s manual has the Bible story written for this age readers and follow-up activities on succeeding pages. The activities reinforce Bible truths of that lesson. 5. Beginner Make and Take. The make and take contains a weekly proj ect page. Read the teacher s guide and prepare a make and take activity in advance of each lesson. 6. Beginner Visuals. The visuals consist of teaching pictures and figures to enhance the lesson presentation. Read the directions in the teacher s guide regarding the use of these materials. TOO MANY ACTIVITIES? Advance planning ensures the choice of activities most suitable for specific schedules. Minor adjustments and op tions will provide for the needs and capabilities of individual classes and resources. 3
Bulletin Board EA S GOD LEADS IN THE WAY OF GOODNESS Cover the board with a large road map. Cut footprints of children from tan paper and attach them for the border. Cut a strip of tan paper to go across the board. It should large road map be wider on the left and taper toward the right to give the green, black and tan perspective of depth for a path. colored paper scis sors Attach an open Bible cutout with the words of John 10:10 stapler printed on it at the top end of the path: I am come that they Bible cutout might have life,... abundantly. markers rubber cement Make shadow letters by cutting two of each letter, one san dpaper from green and one from black. Put the black letter behind the green, slide it down and to the side so about 1/8'' to ¼'' of the black shows around the top letter giving a shadow look. Glue the two together with rubber cement or use white glue sparingly so that the paper doesn t wrinkle. Attach the shadow letters to the board as shown in the sketch. Finally, cut five child-size footprints from sandpaper, alternating right/left feet. Label as shown in the illustration: OBEY, LOVE, TRUST, HONOR and PRAY. Cut green grass accents for the edge of the path to add to the display. 4
Lesson 1 September 3, 2017 Noah Obeyed God Lesson Theme: God kept Noah and his family safe inside the ark. Key Verse: Whoso putteth his trust in the Lord shall be safe. Proverbs 29:25 Lesson Objective: Learners will understand that Noah and his family were kept safe in the ark because Noah had faith to obey God. Bible Principle: God protects those who will have faith to obey Him. Lesson Application: I believe God knows what is best for me. I will trust in Him and obey His Word. The Rain Came Down Genesis 6:1 9:19 In the days of Noah, the world reached a high stage of development. Sin was prevalent. Every law of God had been set aside, and man became a law unto himself. God saw that the wickedness of man was great. He was grieved at the terrible conditions of His creations. Punishment was inevitable. In the midst of sin and idolatry, one man found grace in His eyes. It was this grace that saved Noah and his family. Noah was described as a just man, perfect in his generations and one who walked with God. God spared Noah and his family during His punishment of the wickedness of mankind. Noah was ridiculed and scorned by the world for building the ark in obedience to God.
Devotional When Trouble Comes For thou hast been my defence and refuge in the day of my trouble. Psalm 59:16 Before learners arrive, assemble a simple tent from a bed sheet spread over chairs or a table. Have a flashlight and oscillating fan available. Learners may examine the tent on arrival but sit in usual area until instructed otherwise. Option: for added effect, put up a small tent outside and present the devotional in it. old bed sheet for tent oscillating fan flashlight chairs or table Raise your hand if you can describe a refuge. A refuge is a shelter or safe place. People usually stay inside their houses when storms occur. This tent is not really safe. However, it reminds us of a refuge. Please walk quietly to our refuge and sit down. I believe I hear a storm coming. Use the oscillating fan for wind. Flash a flashlight on and off to simulate lightning. Discuss the safety inside as opposed to the wet cold wind outside. Turn off all effects and continue the devotional. Read Psalm 59:16. David was a man who loved God. When an evil king tried to kill him, he trusted the Lord as his refuge. The verse I read says God is our defense and refuge. He does not promise that we will not have troubles. He does promise He will be with us when we face danger. He will be our refuge and safety. Discuss times when the children may need a refuge. Examples include times when storms come up at school, someone tries to hurt them or they are accused of something they did not do. Encourage learners to share personal experiences when they have needed a refuge. Talk with God in prayer when you are afraid or troubled. He will help you be calm. He is always near. Our lesson today is about a man who followed God s instructions. He built a refuge for himself and his family. He was happy about his choice to obey God when the rains started. 6 Lesson 1
Start Up Before class write names of learners on the attendance chart, Visual 1A. Display the chart, pointing to each learner s name. Emphasize faithful attendance. Discuss the importance of learning about God s leadership. Offer a reward for perfect attendance if possible. Instruct learners to form a line against the wall. Play the game, Mother, May I? Push chairs aside to allow room for learners to form a line. If your room is near an outside exit, the game is best played outside. When I give a command, you are to obey. Give several examples. Before you obey my command say, Mother, may I? Anyone who forgets to say, Mother, may I? must return Play a game of Mother, May I? with learners. Follow the discussion guidelines. to the wall. The winner will be someone who remembers to obey. Play the game for about five minutes to introduce the theme of obedience. Our Bible story today is about someone who was a winner because he obeyed God. He chose to obey although his neighbors teased him. Story Time Visual 1A No one loved or obeyed God except one man. His name was Noah. (Display figure 1A.) Noah acted differently from the people who lived around him. Noah was kind and thoughtful. He did not want to harm other people. Most of all, the Bible tells us that Noah obeyed God. Visual 1 Especially for Teachers The worldwide flood of Noah s day has been disputed for years. However, archaeologists have uncovered evidence causing many scientists to agree that a great flood did cover the entire earth. True science and correct Bible interpretation do not contradict one another. The flood ended the Antediluvian (prior to the great flood) Age. It followed the Adamic Age in which Adam and Eve were expelled from the Garden of Eden for their disobedience. Each dispensation ended with mankind s failure to meet God s perfect standard. The biblical account of the flood in Genesis 6 through 9 records man s wickedness. Only Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord (Genesis 6:8). One hundred twenty years were allowed by a merciful God for repentance. Noah was God s messenger, but none believed the message. Therefore, Noah and his family were spared to perpetuate the human race and preserve animal life. Teachers should emphasize that God did not destroy humanity from rage or without warning. The loving God still waits and warns. However, He will not wait indefinitely. People of every age should be taught that the demand for obedience is for their ultimate good. Lesson 1 7
Time for Action pencils crayons or markers Have learners write their names on their manuals and make and take books. Activities in the learner s manual may be used for discussion or worked on in class. Pages are perforated to be used as takehome work if you choose. In the back of the learner s manual is a list of Key Verses for this quarter to be used as a review and a certificate to be awarded at the end of the quarter. Learner s Manual Discuss the attendance page in front of the manual. A balloon is to be colored each Sunday the learner attends. 1-1 Review the Bible story. Pause frequently for participation by learners. Examples of thought provoking questions include the following: Why do you think God chose Noah over all the people on the earth? Why do you think Noah obeyed God? How did Noah s sons know the flood would come? How can you learn what God wants you to do? 1-2 Noah Knew Learners will color the ark if the sentence is true. Correct answers that are true include: 1, 2, 3, 6, 7, 8 (possibly 9 depending on the learner s opinion). Encourage the learners to change sentences 4 and 5 to make them true statements. 1-3 Feelings and Actions Discuss feelings that are listed on this page. Encourage the learners to show how these feelings might look. Generate other feeling words and list them on the board or a piece of paper. One day God spoke to Noah. God said, I am going to destroy all living things on the earth. I will send a flood. Because Noah had obeyed God, God would protect him and his family. New Words Flood an overflowing of water on dry land Ark the huge boat in which Noah, his family and the animals survived the flood Destroy do away with Refuge place of safety God told Noah how He was going to protect him. Build a big boat, Noah, said God. Build it four hundred fifty feet long, seventy-five feet wide and forty-five feet high. That was a very big boat! Noah, said God, build three decks inside the boat. Build rooms and stalls on each deck. Build a roof over the top. Put a window for air and light. Make one door in the side of the boat. (Remove figure 1A.) Noah wanted to obey God. He started to build the boat. (Show figure 1B.) His sons helped him. All the time Noah was building, he told his neighbors about the flood that God was going to send. They did not believe Noah. They laughed at him. (Show figure 1C.) That did not stop Noah. He and his sons kept right on working. (Remove figures 1B and 1C.) When the ark was finished, Noah and his family loaded all of the animals on the boat. (Display figures 1D-1L.) They obeyed God s instructions about the animals. Then, Noah took his family into the boat. (Show figure 1M.) They climbed aboard the boat, and the Bible says God Himself shut the door. (Remove all figures; show figure 1N.) It rained for forty days and forty nights. During the rain every person and every animal died outside the ark. Noah and his family were safe inside the ark. God saved them from the flood because they obeyed Him. 8 Lesson 1
Let s Live It! Today, we learned about one of the men in the Bible who obeyed God. Because Noah and his family obeyed God, they were protected. God was their refuge in time of danger. Noah believed that God knew what was best for him. Our Key Verse today says, Whoso putteth his trust in the Lord shall be safe, Proverbs 29:25. When we trust God and believe that He knows what is best for us, God is pleased. He wants us to trust Him as Noah did. How Noah might have felt when God said... I will destroy all living things on the earth. Possible answers: surprised, frightened, sad build an ark. Possible answers: surprised, doubtful How the people might have felt when... they saw Noah building an ark. the floodwater started to rise. How I feel when... God gives me a difficult job. people make fun of me. God keeps me safe. 1-4 Key Verse Review Review the Key Verse with the learners. Dear Parents, This quarter your child will be studying about men and women who obeyed God and made wise and courageous choices. Noah and the Ark Abram and Lot Gideon s Altar Elijah and the Ravens Moses from a Baby to the Leader of His People David and Goliath Three Friends in a Furnace Daniel in the Lions Den Queen Esther We encourage bedtime stories and prayers that reinforce this theme. Sincerely, Your Child s Sunday Your School Child s Teacher Teacher Times To Trust Discuss what learners do in times of danger. Discuss the pictures and possible solutions. Example: You are in the park. A stranger asks you to help him find his dog. What should you do? say no get away from the stranger tell an adult MAKE AND TAKE The make and take contains a letter to parents informing them about the study for this quarter. Read the letter to the learners. Have them fold the letter, address it to their parents and stamp it with a stamp from the sticker page. Encourage them to share it with their parents when they get home from church today. Lesson 1 9
Supplemental Activity Provide each learner with a circle. Have the circle cut in half to make an ark (see illustration). glue white paper The learner can glue his ark on a sheet of white paper that contains his Key Verse. Read the verse and discuss it as the children add details to their paper (water and so on) with crayons. Whoso putteth his trust in the Lord shall be safe. Proverbs 29:25 10 Lesson 1
