Welcome to Crusader Flag Football! This spring and summer the Columbus Crusader flag football program will be focusing on the following verse: These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know that you have eternal life. 1 John 5:13 Each week you will have a Bible verse to memorize and a lesson to read at home. Your coach is going to spend a few minutes at practice each week during our devotions break to discuss the lesson with you. The memory verse will be at the top of each lesson page in a thought bubble like this: This lesson guide is for coaches, parents and players to use for regular (we hope at least weekly) discussion of this scripture passage and see the way in which it calls us to believe that God has a plan for us that we may have eternal life through faith and belief in Jesus Christ as God s son. All verses used are from the New American Standard Bible (NASB), unless otherwise noted. The goal of Columbus Crusaders Youth Sports is to teach young men to understand what Biblical manhood looks like and encourage them to pursue that. We also seek to teach young women to understand what Biblical womanhood looks like and encourage them to pursue that. We do this through training in football and cheerleading. Below is the CHRIST acrostics we use to define the traits of Biblical manhood and womanhood. A Man of CHRIST seeks to be a Man of: Commitment a promise completed. Honor above reproach, living by a Biblical standard. Responsibility trustworthiness demonstrated over time. Initiative boldness with integrity. Service intentionally putting the needs of others first, expecting nothing in return. Truth (the same for men and women) a statement or principle that applies to all people, in all places, and at all times A Woman of CHRIST seeks: Contentment being at peace knowing God is in control. Hospitality welcoming, including, treating everyone of equal value. Respect giving honor to God and others. Inspiration giving hope and encouragement to one another. Selflessness in humility, considering others needs more important than our wants. Truth (the same for men and women) a statement or statement that applies to all people, in all places, and at all times

Lesson 1 Week 1 All season we will be studying the verse shown above and on the bottom of each page of this lesson guide, 1 John 5:13. Write it out and post it in your room or somewhere at home where you will see it every day and be able to memorize it. These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know that you have eternal life. 1 John 5:13 This first week we will take a quick look at the whole verse, things like who wrote it, who was he writing to, and why did he write it. Each week during the rest of the season we will dig into the verse a little more. In today s world, we can contact people almost immediately using things like telephones, , and texts. If you want to talk to someone you care about, like your parents or a good friend, it s easy with all the technology we have available. But that wasn t true in the early days of the Christian faith. In those days, when someone wanted to send a message to someone in another town, it was probably in the form of a letter and was sent by a courier, a person responsible for making sure the message arrived at the destination. And the courier did not have an easy time on his travels. There were no motels, cars with air conditioning, or highways with lots of restaurants and rest stops. They walked! 1 John is one of three epistles or letters written by John to groups of new Christian believers. John was one of the original 12 disciples of Jesus, and he served as the pastor of several groups, and these letters were one way he had of communicating with the many congregations he was serving. Even though he might not be right there with them, he still cared about them and wanted to express his love for them, and the love of Jesus.

Lesson 2 Week 2 God is Light This is the message we have heard from Him and announce to you, that God is Light 1 John 1:5 In our first lesson, we learned that 1 John was a letter written by John to the early church groups that he was serving. Our first memory verse, 1 John 5:13, is part of the closing of John s letter. What did he write about in the rest? John opens his letter in 1 John 1:1 with these words: What was from the beginning, what we have heard, what we have seen with our eyes, what we have looked at and touched with our hands, concerning the Word of Life. John isn t writing about something he heard had happened, or repeating a story that someone told him. Remember, John was one of the 12 disciples of Jesus. He is writing about things he experienced while he was with Jesus, events that he saw with his own eyes, things that he learned from Jesus himself! In 1 John 1:5 he wrote: This is the message we have heard from Him and announce to you, that God is Light, and in Him there is no darkness at all. What does John mean when he says, God is Light, and in Him there is no darkness at all? He is talking about keeping things hidden in our hearts and minds, maybe wrong things we have done that we don t want others to know about. God calls those things sin. The darkness is the bad feelings we get when we keep these things inside, feelings like fear and shame. But God doesn t want us to be living in the darkness. He wants us to be free from these sins. And He sent His son Jesus to the earth to be the Light that helps us to get out of the darkness.

Lesson 3 Week 3 Christ and Forgiveness John starts off the second chapter of his letter (1 John 2:1) with My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin Is John writing his letter to the children in these far-off towns? No. He calls them little children because they are new believers in Jesus Christ, and many do not know very much about Him yet. It is like when you first started going to school. You were little children and you did not know a lot about spelling, math, science, and history. You had a teacher that taught you, answered your questions, and helped you learn. And the longer you go to school, the more you learn and the older you get. John was like that for the new believers in the churches he was writing to. He was teaching them about Jesus. Jesus used the same words in Matthew 19:14, Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these. (NIV) Some of his disciples were trying to stop people from bringing their children to meet Jesus, but Jesus knew that all people, including little children, needed to hear what he had to say. My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin 1 John 2:1 John finishes the first verse in chapter 2 with these words, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous Like we talked about in the last lesson, God sent His son Jesus to be Light, to help us escape the darkness caused by our sins. That s what it means to be an advocate, someone who is on our side, who speaks up for us, and helps us when we need it. Jesus was sent to be our advocate, so that we could get rid of the darkness in our lives.

Lesson 4 Week 4 Living in Our World Do not love the world or anything in the world. 1 John 2:15 Toward the end of the second chapter of 1 John, in verses 15 and 16, he writes Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, love for the Father is not in them. For everything in the world the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life comes not from the Father but from the world. (NIV) Why is John telling us not to love the world or anything in it? Isn t this where we live? Didn t God design the Earth to give us everything we need air, food, and water? Yes, God did make the earth and everything in it. But John isn t talking about our planet in these verses. He is talking about the things that man has created or done, and some of these things aren t very good. These are the things that the Bible calls sin. John calls these things the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life? But what does John mean by the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life? Lust of the flesh are those things that you shouldn t do, things that you know God would not want us to do. Those are the things that the little voice inside you your conscience tells you not to do or to turn away from. Lust of the eyes is a little different. This means that we look at things we should not be looking at, or we are looking at them in the wrong way. For some people this will cause envy or jealousy, which is when you want something that s not yours or you can t have. The pride of life means when someone is boastful or bragging. They may be great at passing a football or always get good grades in school. While those aren t bad things, if they are always talking about how great they are because they can do those things this is pride. You may know someone who is like that, or you may even act like that yourself sometimes.

One of the most powerful parts of our ministry has always been prayer. It is our belief that the prayers, especially of parents over their children, carry immense power and the potential to bless beyond our imagination. Please join us in praying for our coaches, players, cheerleaders, and the families connected with this ministry.

Lesson 5 Week 5 God Loves Us, We Should Love One Another For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life. John 3:16 See how great a love the Father has bestowed on us, that we would be called children of God; and such we are. This first verse in 1 John, chapter 3 tells us that we are God s children, and He loves us. In fact, He loves us so much that He sent us His son, Jesus, help us get rid of the sin and darkness in our lives. One of the most famous verses in the Bible is found in another book written by John, one of the four Gospels, in chapter 3, verse 16: For God so loved the world, that He gave His [a]only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life. You may have seen people holding up signs at sporting events with this verse on it. Remember, John s letter was a way to teach the people in the other churches what he had learned directly from Jesus. In 1 John 3:11 he writes: For this is the message which you have heard from the beginning, that we should love one another. Jesus taught that we should love God first, and our neighbors second in Matthew 26: Being able to love God is pretty easy to understand for most of us. But who are our neighbors, and what did Jesus mean when He said we should love them? Jesus tells us that everyone is our neighbor, and we should love them as He loved us. Has there ever been a time when someone was really mean to you? Maybe they said things about you that weren t true, or broke one of your favorite toys. They may even have started a fight with you! How did you feel toward this person? Were you angry? Did you want to do something back to them? Well, that person is a neighbor, and these are the times Jesus is talking about, when we need to love people (neighbors) even if we don t feel like loving them.

Lesson 6 Week 6 God Is Love Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God 1 John 4:7 John knew that the concept of love was important to God, and so it had to be important to the new believers scattered around him. Most of his letter dealt with the fact that God loves us and that we should also practice love as much as possible. In 1 John 4: 7-11 he writes, Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God; and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. The one who does not love does not know God, for God is love. By this the love of God was manifested in us, that God has sent His only begotten Son into the world so that we might live through Him. In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins. Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. In our other lessons, we learned that God sent his Son, Jesus, to help us get rid of the fears and darkness caused by sin. In the verse above you will read the word propitiation. This word means an atoning sacrifice, something that is done as a substitution for punishment. That is what Jesus was for each of us. When he died on the cross at Calgary for our sins, he took our punishment. God sent Jesus to earth to tell people that God did not like sin, in fact God HATES sin. And we don t have to punish ourselves or stay hidden in the darkness that our sins cause, because God knows about them and He loves us anyway. Jesus died so that we could get out of the darkness and live in the light, the Light of God. And the best part about that- it s FREE! All we must do is believe and accept.

Lesson 7 Week 7 God s Word Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners I Timothy 1: 15 The Bible is the teachings of God that were passed down to certain men. It became their mission to tell other people about it. Many times, these messages were written down. A lot of times the messages were repeated in meetings or to large crowds that gathered to hear about the teachings of Jesus. These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know that you have eternal life. John wrote these words, and the rest of the epistle, to teach the early believers about God and His love. John understood that the fear and darkness that people sometimes experienced because of their sin could only be taken away by God. On the next page are several Bible verses which explain what the Bible says about putting your faith in Jesus. It is a decision every one of us gets to make. Accepting what Jesus did for all of us by dying on the cross for our sins is the decision. It s wonderful that God gives us this opportunity to know what Jesus did for us and then decide to receive His forgiveness so that we can live with Him forever. Some people will never accept it, either because they don t believe or they simply don t want to think about it. But not thinking about it is also deciding to not accept it. We pray you will make the decision to accept what Jesus did for you. It is as simple as talking to God about it. It doesn t have to be anything big or fancy, just a prayer where you talk to God. It could be something like this: - Tell God you know that you are a sinner because of the wrong things you have done - Ask God to forgive your sins. He will forgive them all because Jesus took away our sins by dying on the cross. - Thank God for forgiving you and ask Jesus to come into your heart and be your Lord. Once you make this decision, tell someone you made it! It s a lot easier if you have someone to help you keep on the right path, or answer any questions you may have. So, if you asked Jesus to be Lord of your life, tell your parents, your coach, a member of the Crusaders staff, or your pastor. We want to be there to answer any questions you may have or help you to explain things. And if you don t have a Bible, let your coach know, and we will make sure you get one of your own to keep and study.
