7 Mission Report What is Mission to me? I really started to sweat this task as soon as Mike Easterly mentioned that we will be speaking of our trip in our Church service. After a week in the tropics of Costa Rica surely I can sweat just a bit more to offer up some notion of what is Mission to me. What keeps coming to me when I say these words is to give thanks for the opportunity to serve others. I must give thanks to my Mentor and friend Mike Easterly for seeing in me something that I did not my calling for Mission. My church family has entrusted me to go forth and help those less fortunate better their circumstance, better their lives, and give of our work and resource so they can better serve Jesus and their communities. Wil, the founder of Costa Rica Mission, reminded us that it s not all about the work. It s about the communion of working together. At one worship service that we attended it was very apparent that the Pastor and parishioners were a bit nervous about having 50 Norte Americanos a part of the celebration of the Memory of Jesus. Will the music be acceptable? Will they understand my message? Have I prepared enough for my sermon? Will they know not to take the bread until everyone is ready? When I first met this Pastor at the work site he was unassuming as anyone. Put a microphone in his hands and this man connected with each and every one of us regardless of the language barrier. He repeated several times Gloria a Dios para este lugar, Gloria a Dios al los Norte Americanos en este lugar. Glory to God for this place, Glory to God for the Americans in this place. He was so happy to have a place for everyone to celebrate The Memory of Christ. At that moment we all became the body of Christ without borders, language, or countries separating us. I want to give thanks to all of you for sending me with two of my kids, Cyrus and Sierra. Can a father be more proud of his children when he sees them working, laughing, loving, sweating, while helping others? When Cyrus witnessed me getting tired of mixing the stucco by hand in the wheelbarrow and continually spelled me for a rest I gave thanks. To see others follow his lead and direction in this stucco process and watch him with amazement lift a 90lb. sack and hold it until the mixing was completed and the bag empty, more than ten wheelbarrows, was truly inspiring. 7

8 When my Sierra wrote me the most beautiful father s day card expressing her gratitude that she has been given the opportunity to go to Costa Rica with her dad to help others. When the Pastor and his wife pull me aside to acknowledge her work ethic and give me a pat on the back. Of course I said you have to get to know my wife Lacey, the best decision of my life. I have to ask, what have I done to deserve this feeling inside of me? Could it be just a glimpse of how much our Father in Heaven loves each and every one of us for our little part in this life? This is what Mission is to me. People witnessing people, improving someone s life through adversity, work, love, fellowship, hope, and prayer. All in the attitude of giving thanks to our creator. Thank you all for giving me the responsibility and the opportunity of working through you in doing the Lord s work. It is really easy to forget to be thankful in these times. As Anne Frank said, even the smallest of lights in a dark room will give illumination. Thanks be to God. Amen! Matthew T. Withers Entire NUMC and Reseda UMC team
