Prep: No prep needed Sunday s Schedule: 10:50-11:00 - Youngers (TK-2 nd ) will stay downstairs and sing - Olders (3-6 th ) will stay upstairs & hang out until SS starts. 11:00-11:30 You teach the lesson. 11:30-11:45 Shepherds have their time to talk/pray with the kids. Key Question: What did we discover about Jesus today? Today s Objective: To help the kids understand who Jesus is, who He invites us to be, that He loves us & He came to be our Servant King. He came to show us how to live this life for the sake of others. Note to the Teacher: Remember that this is a guide for you to use. You DO NOT need to follow it verbatim feel free to adapt, add, or remove things as you see fit. As usual, our youngers will need some more help & guidance than the olders will that is another reason it is great that we have such great Shepherds! 1

2 The Servant King Notes for the Teacher on this Bible Story: In John 13 we read that Jesus washed his disciples feet. It was unheard of for a master to wash his pupils feet. This incident is remarkable not just because Jesus did this in spite of who he is (the eternal Son of God); it is incredible that he did this in spite of what he was facing. Jesus was facing torment and death, and facing something much greater than torment and death he was facing dying for the world s sin. And yet, he washed their feet. In spite of what he was facing, he was thinking of them; he was serving them. Note, it doesn t say he washed the feet of eleven or ten. He washed all their feet. When he came to Judas, to the feet of the person who was about to arrange for his torment and death, he washed his feet. He washed the betrayer. So Jesus did not just serve in spite of who he is, and in spite of what he was facing he also served in spite of who they were in spite of what they had done or were about to do. When Jesus presided over the Last Supper and said, This is my body and blood, he was drawing parallels between the Passover event and his own mission. Jesus was revising the Passover meal that Moses had said was to be done as a perpetual ordinance (Exodus 12:14). This is a tremendous claim. Jesus is saying something like this: My death is the central and climactic event toward which the whole story of the people of God and the history of salvation has been moving. Every other deliverance by every other leader, every other sacrifice, every other prophet, priest, and king all have been pointing to this night. I am about to deal with evil and sin and death once and for all. Note just a few things that we learn about the meaning of Jesus death from the parallels with Passover: Jesus death was absolutely necessary. We are all subject to the angel of death. We are under judgment unless we take shelter under the blood of the Lamb. Thus Jesus death means nothing unless there is wrath and danger and judgment to be saved from. Jesus death was a sacrifice. He is the Passover Lamb the one to whom all the Passover feasts pointed. Jesus reference to his blood is important. The Old Testament tells us that only through the shedding of blood can sin be atoned for (see Leviticus 17:11 and also Hebrews 9:22). Jesus death was substitutionary. A lamb was slain so that the Israelite firstborn would not be. Jesus did not die to pay for anything of his own; he died in our place, instead of us, as our substitute. Jesus death was a perfect and sufficient sacrifice. Just as the Passover lamb had to be without blemish, so Jesus was perfect and sinless. Because he was perfect, his death is of infinite value. We can add nothing to it. Jesus death was poignant. By Jesus characterizing himself as a lamb, he shows how vulnerable, weak, and helpless he became. He was led like a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before its shearers is silent, so he did not open his mouth (Isaiah 53:7). Though he is all-powerful he became nothing (Philippians 2:7) for us. 2

3 March 25 th, 2018 Olders Lesson: The Servant King Welcome the children to class and introduce yourself. Recap the last couple weeks lessons (2-3 min) Ask the kids what they have been learning about in Sunday School. - Let a couple kids share. Ask them what they have been discovering about Jesus the last few weeks. - Let a few more kids share. To lead into the theme of today s story, say something like We have been learning a lot about Jesus in Sunday School, but Jesus, Himself, has not been in many of the Bible stories we ve been talking about so far. Since Christmas, we ve talked about Moses and the Exodus, the Israelites crossing the Red Sea, Abraham & Isaac, Joseph, and King David. Since Christmas, we ve only talked about 2 Bible stories where Jesus was actually IN the story. Today, we are back to talking about Jesus and what this Easter Season is all about. Hand out the memory verse cards & read together today s memory verse Mark 8:31 The Son of Man must be killed and after three days rise again. Say something like In our memory verse for today, Jesus tells his disciples about his death. Jesus knows he is going to be killed; it is part of God s Great Rescue Plan. In our story today Jesus explains more about his death and this rescue plan. Hand out the Servant King activity sheet and give the following instructions - Today we will be reading 2 perspectives on the Last Supper: the final meal Jesus ate with His disciples before He was arrested. - There are 3 parts of this story that we want to pay close attention to; Feet Washing, the Last Supper, and the Passover. o On your piece of paper, there are 3 overlapping circles. Each of those circles will represent the 3 parts of the story we want to pay close attention to Remember, those are Feet Washing, the Last Supper, and the Passover. o At the center of the circles, in the overlapping parts, is a cross. Why do you think we put a cross in the middle of these 3 circles? On the back of the paper, have the kids write why they think there is a cross in that part of the circles. When they finish writing, have them decorate the cross with crayons or markers as we wait for everyone to finish. - As we read the Bible passages, pay close attention to those 3 parts of the story taking some mental notes about what that is all about and why each part is important to the whole Easter story. - We will then talk about each part and talk about what we are going to be doing in these circles on our paper. Tell the kids that we will be starting with The Last Supper Have the kids turn in their Bibles to Luke 22: Once they all are opened to Luke 22, have a volunteer start reading. Every couple of verses they can pass on to another to continue reading the story stopping after reading verse 23. o What special meal did Jesus call this Last Supper? The Passover Meal. 3

4 o What did Jesus do with the bread? What did He say the bread represented? Broke it. His body. o So when was Jesus body broken? On the cross. o What did Jesus do with the wine/cup? What did He say the wine/cup represented? He poured it out & said it was shed for you. His blood. o So when was Jesus blood shed? On the cross. o Do you know when Christians do this today we remember that Jesus rescued us? The Lord s Supper Communion. - Ask the kids What we could draw in that Last Supper circle to represent what this Last Supper meant in this great rescue story of Jesus? **Have them draw o Some ideas bread & a cup, Jesus, a table, a cross go with the kids ideas. o Have them write Body & Blood somewhere in the circle. Next up is Feet Washing Have the kids turn in their Bibles to John 13: Just like before, have someone start reading John 13:1 switching readers every couple of verses until you are done reading verses o What do you think of this whole idea of feet washing? o Do you think it was normal that a great teacher or leader to wash their follower s feet? Absolutely NOT! Especially not in that time & culture! o Why did Jesus do this? Because He is the Servant King. - To help them understand this part of the passage, you now read the Luke 22:24-27 passage. - Ask the kids What we could draw in that Feet Washing circle to represent what this Feet Washing meant in this great rescue story of Jesus? **Have them draw o Some ideas A crown (representing the Servant King), water, feet go with the kids ideas. o Have them write Servant somewhere in the circle. Lastly is Passover - Before turning to Exodus, ask the kids what they remember from that Sunday School lesson (way back in January) where they learned about the Passover and how God freed the Israelites from Egypt. o Let a few of the kids share what they may remember. - (If necessary, have someone read Exodus 12:12-14 to help job their memory) o How did God rescue His people from Egypt? The plagues the final plague being the death of all firstborn sons except those whose doors were covered with the blood of the lamb. The Angel of Death would passover all homes covered in the blood of the lamb. o Do you remember what Jesus has to do with that old story of the Passover? Jesus is the final Passover Lamb, who died so that we all could be saved just like those firstborn sons. - Ask the kids What we could draw in that Passover circle to represent what this Passover meant in this great rescue story of Jesus? **Have them draw o Some ideas A lamb go with any other reasonable ideas also. 4

5 o Have them write Rescue somewhere in the circle. When they are done drawing and writing, ask them What have we learned about the importance of Easter? Why do we celebrate this holiday? Drawing the Lesson to a Close Say something like - Jesus is the Servant King and the Passover Lamb. Just like hundreds of years earlier when the blood of the Passover lamb saved the Israelite children and led to the whole nation of Israel being set free from slavery in Egypt, Jesus knew he had to die to rescue us and set us free from our slavery to sin and death. - Jesus body was broken and his blood was poured out on the cross so we could be saved. Jesus in the Story (Hand out the Follow Jesus cards). Ask: What did we discover about Jesus from today s story? o Have a few kids share their thoughts aloud. o Have them write their thoughts on the Follow Jesus card. - Have them flip the cards over and have them think about what they can do this week to follow Jesus o Have a few kids share their thoughts aloud. o Have them write their thoughts on the card. - Encourage the kids to take the cards with them and think about these things this week. Memory Verse Have them take out the cards again. Introduce the verse Jesus knew he was going to die. The verse we recited at the start was from one of the times Jesus talked about his own death. Remember, Son of Man is just a way Jesus referred to himself. Mark 8:31 The Son of Man must be killed and after three days rise again. Read the verse aloud together as a group Pray with the kids Ask the children to pray praises to God, thanking him that Jesus died in our place to rescue us from our sin. Pray aloud, thanking God that Jesus body was broken and his blood poured out on the cross so we could be saved. Thank God that Jesus is the Servant King and the Passover Lamb who died in our place to rescue us from our sin. Finishing around 11:30 will give the Shepherds time to see if the kids have their previous weeks memory verses memorized, give them rewards for memorizing them, and have time to pray with them.
