OUTCOMES BY THE END OF THIS UNIT MOST PUPILS ARE EXPECTED TO BE ABLE TO: Explain connections between the story of and the concepts of freedom and salvation, using theological terms. Make clear connections between the Bible texts studied and what Christians believe about being the People of and how they should behave. Explain ways in which some Christians put their beliefs into practice by trying to bring freedom to others. SOME PUPILS WILL BE ABLE TO: Identify ideas about freedom and justice arising from their study of Bible texts and comment on how far these are helpful or inspiring. Justifying their responses. Identify examples of law texts and suggest how believers might interpret them. Weigh up how Christian ideas about justice relate to the issues, problems and opportunities of their own lives and the world today, developing insights of their own.

2 KNOWLEDGE BUILDING BLOCKS PUPILS WILL KNOW THAT: The Old Testament tells the story of a particular group of people, the children of Israel, known as the People of - and their relationship with. The story of and the Exodus shows how rescued his people from slavery in Egypt; Christians see this story as looking forward to how Jesus death and resurrection also rescue people from slavery to sin. Christians apply this idea to living today by trying to serve and to bring freedom to others; for example, loving others, caring for them, bringing health, food, justice, and telling the story of Jesus. Christians see the Christian church as the People of, and try to live in a way that attracts others to ; for example, as salt and light in the world.

Jacob brought his family to Egypt they had been there for 400 years but were now slaves Still the People of Read Exodus 1:8-22 Introduce children to life as a slave in ancient Egypt. Look at pictures while reading information about life as a slave: With your partner or in a group - Discuss What life must have been like for a Hebrew slave in Egypt What did they have to do? How were their families affected? What would they have liked to do? Hot-seating: What was your job? Did you have to do as you were told? Who was in your family? How did you deal with this situation every day? Where did you get your strength from? There are 8 important events in life we are going to investigate the first 2 1. in the basket 2. Killing the task master Let s READ Exodus 2:1-10 birth; Exodus 2:11-15 killing of task master; Year 5/6 Write a brief synopsis of the story so far in your books. Why did do it? Year 4 Draw two pictures one of in river and other of him killing the Egyptian and write 2 sentences under each to explain the story. Year 3/SEN. Order pictures in books and make a basket. Also for and against for letting Hebrews go and for keeping them. Last two plagues Year 6/5/4 Pupils retell story in own words (5/6 express your own thought on why continued and why kept refusing) and draw a picture that details the ten plagues.(30 seconds drawing each of the 10 plagues) Year 3 with Mrs Moody(SEN) Draw a picture that includes the ten plagues. Divided sheet of paper. (2min pictures) Plenary: Identify some of the main themes in this story. Freedom, Suffering, Leadership, obedience any others? Can you link this to another story in the New Testament?

Which of these do you think would be hardest to keep? Is it possible to always keep all ten? Is it harder not to be greedy than not to kill or always tell the truth? What happens when humans fail to live up to the standard? Should a person be punished or helped? Which commandments would have most impact on the world today if everyone followed them? In Groups: Mrs Hickling to work with Year 3 and SEN Mrs Moody to support other groups (worksheet) Write 10 Lessons for Living What we can all do to bring more freedom and justice, good lessons for living. Plenary: Can you think of steps you could take towards freedom and justice for yourself?
