Leader Prep Each week you ll find Inspire, Equip, and Support articles that will help you take time for yourself before you begin your prep. The Inspire article contains personal stories of how God has worked in our lives as fellow ministry leaders, along with insights into that week s Ponder Point. The Equip article gives perspective and context as it introduces the lesson s Bible passage. The Support article provides a time of reflection and assessment through encouragement, prayer, and time in God s Word as you prepare your heart to present the lesson to the kids in your ministry. Inspire When I was a little kid, I loved the Fourth of July. Neighbors gathered in the cul-de-sac and piled firecrackers into an old, rusted wheelbarrow. We lit them for hours, watching their colors flicker and flash while hearing them crackle and screech. After sunset, all the kids at least 30 or so ran together to the top of a big, grassy hill and watched the big fireworks display being set off at the fairgrounds. Looking back, I know I didn t just love this holiday for the firecrackers. I loved being together with all the neighbors, with everyone in a good mood, having fun. The Fourth of July meant friends, neighbors, firecrackers, hot dogs, and laughter. I could never sleep the night before in anticipation of all the fun! That fun feeling as a kid on the Fourth of July is nothing compared to the feeling of joy and restful satisfaction I experience while celebrating what God has done for His people. I feel safe. I feel loved. I feel hopeful. I feel validated. I feel invigorated and inspired. Wouldn t it be amazing if kids knew this experience early in their lives? If they learned how truly good God is? How much fun it is to be with His people? How wonderful it is to remember and celebrate His love and faithfulness to us? Tori Funkhouser TruStory Team 2

Equip Every sixth and thirteenth lesson, we pause to remember and celebrate, just as God instructed His people to do. Feast of Unleavened Bread: A Feast Celebrating God as Redeemer The Feast of Unleavened Bread celebrates God s miraculous deliverance of the Israelites from the bondage of Egypt and, ultimately, His deliverance of our bondage to sin. Beginning on the day after Passover, the Israelites were to take seven days to eat bread without yeast and to cease working on the first and seventh days. The unleavened bread represented their quick departure from Egypt, not having time for the yeast to make their bread rise. In the New Testament, Jesus speaks of yeast (or leaven) symbolically, as sin. Jesus broke unleavened bread with His disciples and said, This is My body. Jesus was without sin as His body was broken during His crucifixion. Support Remember & Celebrate weekends offer a chance to step outside the norm, to intentionally set aside time to reflect on the goodness of God and everything He s done in our lives. It s a time to celebrate who He is. During these weekends, have a great time! Be goofy, laugh, dance, and play. Enjoy your time together. Even so, be wise with your time as you remember and celebrate with your kids and families. This is a rich time of celebration together as a faith community. As you know, these kinds of wonderful moments don t come often. As you prepare for this weekend, set aside some time to remember how God has worked in your life during the past few weeks. You might write these down so you ll remember them in the future. Thank God for them and celebrate His goodness! Then, pray that God will give you the wisdom to balance both fun and significance during your time with your kids. Ask God to help you enter into a spirit of celebration with your kids so that you, also, can savor this special time. Also pray that families will remember and celebrate together, later, at home! 3

CONNECT// 10 min. Children eat together, get to know one another better, and engage with the day s biblical feast or festival. Feast of Unleavened Bread The Feast of Unleavened Bread is a holiday connected to the most amazing event in Israelite history the time God rescued them from Egypt! For seven days each year, the Israelites ate unleavened bread to remind them that they d left Egypt in such a hurry that they didn t have time for their bread to rise. This holiday reminded the people that God had rescued and redeemed them from their slavery. It s a joyful time to remember God as Redeemer! Festival Banner cutout (see Resources) CONNECT Questions cards (see Resources) Optional: Recipe Cards (see Resources) Scissors Tape Food, drinks, plates, cups, utensils, and napkins Name tags (1 per person) Markers PREPARE AHEAD Encourage families to bring festival-themed goodies to the feast. Invite them to create the foods found on the Recipe Cards passed out the previous week. Print, cut out, and assemble the Festival Banner. Print and cut out the CONNECT Questions cards. Optional: Print copies of the Recipe Cards in case any parents want to take them home. SET UP Tape the banner in a prominent place. Place the food, drinks, and other supplies on the feasting table along with the CONNECT Questions cards. Put the name tags and markers near the entrance to the room. Invite everyone to wear a name tag and then work together to set up the feast. Give the children, leaders, and parents separate jobs. For example, allow the kids to set the table while leaders fill the cups with water and parents set out the food. Reassign the jobs for each Remember & Celebrate gathering so everyone gets to be involved in a different part of the feast preparation. As you eat together, engage in the questions and activities found in the following section. These conversation starters and activities will help your kids and parents connect with old friends and get to know new friends. They will also help your faith community interact with the day s festival. Optional: As your parents and kids eat and talk, invite them to decorate the Festival Banner before hanging it in the room. 4

Connect Games Diagonal Dash CONNECT Questions cards (see Resources) The Israelites had to leave Egypt in a hurry. There wasn t even time for their bread to rise! Today invite your kids to play a game requiring them to hurry across the room. Ask a child volunteer to be the leader. Give him a copy of the CONNECT Questions cards and have him stand in the middle of the room with his eyes closed. When he says, Dash, the rest of the kids will silently dash to one of the four corners of the room while the leader slowly counts down from five aloud. Once he s done counting, with his eyes still closed, he will point to one of the four corners of the room and then open his eyes. Everyone in that corner must answer one of the CONNECT Questions chosen by the leader. Everyone in that corner will then sit out until the next time you play. The remaining players should continue by playing another round. Play until everyone has answered a CONNECT Question or until there is only one person, besides the leader, left standing. The child left standing becomes the new leader. Play as many rounds as time permits. REMEMBER & CELEBRATE// 30 min. Children remember and celebrate who God is and what He s done in their lives and the lives of those who have come before them in The Big God Story. Storytelling During REMEMBER & CELEBRATE weekends, Storytelling gives the community time to tell stories about what God has been doing in their lives and hearts at church and at home. These stories can be shared in the form of videos, s from parents, written or spoken stories from kids and leaders, etc. These stories help us remember what God has done in our lives, what we have to be thankful for, and how we can praise Him for His love, provision, and guidance. As you tell stories, encourage kids to be respectful of their friends and leaders by listening quietly while they speak. Also, whether you choose to experience storytelling with high energy or in a more restful way, remember to continue in a spirit of celebration for what God has done in the lives of your kids, leaders, church, and families. Remembering and Celebrating God in Our Family 5

Bibles In Exodus 12, God commanded His people to celebrate the Feast of Unleavened Bread. Every year the Israelites stopped to remember what God had done for them and to celebrate how He had redeemed them. What does redeemer mean? Explain that redeemer means someone who buys back. God redeemed the Israelites by freeing them from slavery, and Jesus redeemed us by setting us free from our sins, or buying us back from the power of sin and death. What do you think of when I say, God is our Redeemer? God redeemed His people all throughout the Bible. He kept His promises and redeemed His people from slavery in Egypt. In the New Testament, God sent Jesus to redeem us from our slavery to sin. Through Jesus sacrifice, we can be rescued from the power of sin and enter into a relationship with God. The Feast of Unleavened Bread reminds us of how God has been the Redeemer all throughout The Big God Story! Describe some events or passages from the Bible that show God as Redeemer. Leaders, feel free to give some examples to start the conversation. Describe a time when you saw God redeem you or someone you know. Leaders and parents, feel free to share examples from your own lives. Our Faith Community Ponder Point pennants (see Resources) Images: Angels, Grain (see Resources) Bibles Scissors Yarn or tape Coat or robe (preferably colorful) Tumbleweed or artificial plant Toy frog Small beach bucket filled with sand Optional: RESPOND pieces from past lessons PREPARE AHEAD Print the Ponder Point pennants and cut them out. Tape them to the base of the Festival Banner or hang them up with yarn or string. Optional: Tape RESPOND pieces from past lessons around the room. Print the images of the Angels and Grain and hide them in the room. Also hide the coat, tumbleweed or plant, frog, and bucket of sand. During the past several weeks, the kids have learned many wonderful and beautiful things about God s character and The Big God Story. They have also responded to Him and pondered how His story and His Spirit affect their own lives. Spend some time during this section helping your kids remember and celebrate some of what they ve 6

experienced and learned about God. Show them the Ponder Point pennants. Each one names the main point highlighted about God during each lesson. These, as well as the questions below, will help jog the kids memories about what they learned about God and how it affected their daily lives. Then encourage parents and kids to search for the hidden items around the room. Let them know you ve hidden five items that relate to each lesson from the past several weeks. Once all five items have been found, encourage the kids to gather in a circle and figure out which item goes with which lesson. Have them place the items in the order each one appears in The Big God Story, and then refer to the items as you review the lessons together. Angel image: Lesson 7 (God Is Faithful) Coat: Lesson 8 (God Redeems) Grain image: Lesson 9 (God Saves) Tumbleweed or artificial plant: Lesson 10 (God Is I AM) Toy frog: Lesson 11 (God Is Warrior) Beach bucket filled with sand: Lesson 12 (God is Victorious) TruStory Fall Lessons 7 12: Lesson 7, God Is Faithful: Genesis 27:41 28:17; Hold up the Angel image. Where in The Big God Story did we hear about someone who dreamed about angels going up and down stairs? Allow and interact with responses. Yes, Jacob had a dream like this, and God told Jacob that He would be His God! Jacob was the grandson of Abraham, the man to whom God promised to give many descendants and land for His special people, the Israelites. One night Jacob was preparing to see his brother Esau again. He was scared because many years earlier he had stolen his brother s birthright and blessing. God came to Jacob and wrestled with him that night. At the end of the wrestling match, God changed Jacob s name. What did God change it to? Allow responses. Yes, God changed Jacob s name to Israel. Israel went on to have 12 sons who became the nation of Israel! God kept His promise to Jacob. God is always faithful. Why did God stay faithful to Jacob? How have you seen God s faithfulness in your life? Lesson 8, God Redeems: Genesis 37; Jacob had 12 sons, but he loved one of them most of all. Who was Jacob s favorite son? Allow responses; interact with responses. Yes, Joseph. Jacob had a special relationship with Joseph. Jacob even gave Joseph a beautiful gift. Hold up the coat or robe. Jacob s gift and Joseph s dreams made the rest of his brothers jealous. They wanted to get rid of Joseph, so they sold him into slavery. But God was with Joseph. Even though Joseph went to prison in Egypt, God provided a way for him to speak with Pharaoh. With God s help, Joseph was able to interpret Pharaoh s dreams. Joseph told Pharaoh that there would be seven years with plenty of food but then seven years of famine. So Pharaoh put Joseph in charge of storing up lots of food for the famine. Although Joseph had been sold into slavery and betrayed by his brothers, God redeemed his situation. God stayed with Joseph while He was in Egypt. God turned Joseph s bad situations into a good one! 7

Why do you think Joseph could trust God even when things were bad? How has God been your Redeemer? Lesson 9, God Saves: Genesis 42 47; 50 Hold up the Grain image. Where in The Big God Story did people need grain because there was a famine? Allow responses; interact with responses. Exactly. Remember how Joseph saw in Pharaoh s dream that there would be a famine? Well, this famine wasn t only in Egypt. It affected many nations around Egypt, including the land where Joseph s brothers lived. Jacob sent most of his sons to Egypt because he d heard they had food. The brothers asked the second-in-command of Egypt for grain. Who was the second-in-command? Allow responses. It was their brother, Joseph! Joseph s brothers didn t recognize him, but Joseph recognized them. Joseph found a way for all of the brothers to come to Egypt. When they arrived, Joseph couldn t hold it in any longer he revealed his identity as their brother! Joseph told them not to be afraid because God had used all of the difficult things that had happened to him for good. Because Joseph had been in Egypt, he had saved lots of food for the famine and in that way had saved many lives. Then Joseph had his father, Jacob, and all of his brothers move to Egypt. God promised Abraham that he would have many descendants and that the whole world would be blessed through him. Joseph and his brothers were a part of those descendants, and, eventually, Jesus was born through that family! God used Joseph s situation to save his family from starvation so that the family line would continue. And through Jesus, God saved us! Why do you think Joseph could forgive his brothers? Why did God send Jesus to save us? When have you seen God use a hard situation in your life for good? Lesson 10, God Is I AM: Exodus 1 4 Hundreds of years after Joseph s family arrived in Egypt, new rulers decided to make the Israelites their slaves. God s people cried out to Him, asking Him to save them. Whom did God choose to help lead the Israelites out of slavery? Allow and interact with responses. How did God get Moses attention? Hold up the tumbleweed or artificial plant. Yes, God called to Moses from a burning bush! He told Moses that He would set the Israelites free from slavery in Egypt and told Moses to say I AM sent him. There is no one like God, and He would reveal Himself to the people through the amazing things He would do. But Moses felt afraid. He wasn t a good speaker and didn t know how to lead the people. So God showed Moses a miracle: Moses walking stick turned into a snake! After that, Moses went to the Israelites and told them about God s plan. God was going to save them all! God revealed Himself to Moses at the burning bush, and then He revealed Himself to the Israelites and Egyptians through the amazing things He did. God has revealed Himself to us as well through Jesus, the Holy Spirit, the Bible, and many other ways. What is special about the way God revealed Himself to Moses? What are some ways God has showed Himself to you? Lesson 11, God Is Warrior: Exodus 5 12 After God spoke to Moses, Moses asked Pharaoh to let the Israelites go. What did Pharaoh say? Allow 8

and interact with responses. Exactly! Pharaoh said no! He didn t believe in the one true God. So God began to show His great and awesome power in Egypt. He sent 10 plagues. Does anyone remember what the plagues were? Hold up the toy frog. God sent frogs, gnats, darkness, flies, and many other plagues upon the Egyptians. But Pharaoh refused to listen to God. So God sent one last, very sad plague. The firstborn sons in Egypt died. But God provided the way for the Israelite sons to be saved. If the Israelites put the lamb s blood on their doorposts, God would pass over their homes and spare their sons. Finally Pharaoh had had enough, so he gave in and let the Israelite people go! God is Warrior. He fought for His people through the amazing miracles He did in Egypt. God still fights for us and saves us today! He provided Jesus to die for our sins and bring the ultimate victory! Why did God fight for His people when they were in Egypt? What are some ways God fights for you as your warrior? Lesson 12, God Is Victorious: Exodus After Pharaoh let the Israelites go, he changed his mind! He was mad at what God had done, and he decided to chase after the Israelites and bring them back to Egypt to be slaves again. Pharaoh and his great army caught up with the Israelites at the shore of the Red Sea. But God was saving the Israelites. Does anyone remember what happened next? Allow responses. God did an amazing miracle. Moses raised his staff over the water, and the entire sea divided in two! The Israelites crossed the sea on dry land! Hold up the bucket of sand. All of the Israelites crossed through the sea while God kept the Egyptian army away. But Pharaoh wouldn t give up! His army tried to cross through the sea to chase after the Israelites. But after all the Israelites reached the other side safely, the waters fell back and covered the Egyptian army. God s people did not need to be afraid any longer. God is victorious He rescued them! The people trusted in God and worshipped Him with a song of praise! How do you think the Israelites felt when they saw God s great miracle? How has God given you victory in your life? My Life Blank Pennant cutout (see Resources) Scissors Markers or colored pencils Optional: string or tape PREPARE AHEAD Print one Blank Pennant cutout for each child and cut it out. 9

Give the children a chance to respond to what they ve learned about God and how it has affected their lives. Encourage the kids to write stories and draw responses to God on a Blank Pennant cutout. For example, kids might write, God, thank You for Your gift of freedom, or they might draw themselves and an event that reminds them of God s freedom in their lives. Leaders can share as well. Optional: Tape or hang the completed pennants around your room. RESPOND// 15 min. Children laugh and enjoy themselves as they connect with one another and play together all while looking back at The Big God Story. Remember Roundup During Remember Roundup, kids will round up the people in The Big God Story whom they heard about during the past six or seven weeks. Through interactive games, activities, and more, the kids will get their bearings in The Big God Story, which will not only help them be amazed by God s narrative but also help them remember that they have a role to play in His story as well. 1st 6th: Bean Scene The Big God Story images (see Resources) Dry beans (1 bag, 16 oz.) Bowl (big enough to hold dry beans) SET UP Print The Big God Story images, fold them up, and place them in the bowl. Ask the children to partner up, encouraging the older children to pair up with younger children. Explain that each pair will pick an image from the bowl. The image will show a scene related to the parts of The Big God Story that they ve heard about in the past few weeks. Their goal will be to recreate that scene on the table using the beans. They can arrange the beans to make a picture of the scene or use the beans as props in acting out the scene. But, tell them they can t just spell out the name of the scene! The rest of the group will try to guess the scene. Invite one pair to come up to the front, draw an image from the bowl, and explain the scene using the beans while everyone else guesses. Once the scene has been guessed correctly, invite the pair to share what they remember about that portion of The Big God Story. Continue to play, giving each pair a chance to depict a scene using the beans. Festival Games 10

Invite your children to play these fun and engaging games as they remember some of what they ve heard in The Big God Story recently. 3rd 6th: Stack Em Up Festival Games questions (see Resources) Disposable cups (30 50) Stopwatch or timer SET UP Print the Festival Games questions. On a table, set out two large stacks of disposable cups. The table should be big enough to allow two children enough room to build their own pyramids out of cups. Divide the group into two teams. Invite one child from each team to come up to the table. Give each child a stack of disposable cups. Tell them you re going to give them one minute to create a pyramid out of cups by stacking them on top of one another. If their cups fall during that minute, they must start over. At the end of one minute, the child with the highest pyramid wins the round and gets to answer a Festival Games question. If she gets it right, she gets a point for her team. Then invite two more kids up to race against each other to stack cups. Keep track of the team scores, and play until each child gets a chance to answer a question or one of the teams reaches a predetermined score. BLESS// 5 min. Children are blessed through a prayer of commission, a portion of Scripture, or words of encouragement and guidance. Bible Construction paper (1 sheet for every 5 6 people) Markers At the end of each Remember & Celebrate lesson, encourage the parents to stay and bless their children. If some of the kids parents aren t present, invite them to join you in a circle or join another family s circle. Invite the parents to pray the written blessing over their child and also pray a special blessing over her in their own words. The Feast of Unleavened Bread is a time to remember how God has redeemed His people. God loves us, saves us, and rescues us! God has blessed us by sending Jesus to redeem us from our sins! 11

One of the most important parts of the Feast of Unleavened Bread is taking time to talk with people about the things God has done. Invite the children and families to split into groups of five or six. Hand out construction paper and markers, and invite each group to make a poster or collage that demonstrates some of the things God has done or the ways He has redeemed things in their lives. After a few minutes, invite each group to share their poster with everyone. Part 1: Individual Blessing Place a hand on the shoulder or hand of each child and speak the following blessing based on Psalm 19:14: Lord, may the words of (child s name) s mouth and the thoughts of (his/her) heart be pleasing in your eyes. You are (child s name) s Rock and Redeemer. Part 2: Communal Blessing After the children have been blessed individually, invite everyone to come together for the communal blessing. May you know God loves you and redeems you. May you rest in His peace, joy, and grace this week. HomeFront Weekly is provided as a parent resource with each week s lesson (see Resources) and can be ed or printed and distributed. This preteaching tool encourages families to spend time in God s Word together before children arrive at church. The best part is that parents are the first to introduce their kids to the Bible content they ll hear at church. In this way, the church is supporting families as they spiritually nurture their children. 12
