1 ST. JOHN'S UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST 139 N. Fourth Street Emmaus, Pennsylvania July 24, 2011 Sixth Sunday after Pentecost 9:15 AM The People of God Gather For Worship Organ Prelude Hymn: Jesus Loves Me #113 Please Be Seated Welcome and Announcements Mission Moment Marilyn Enger VBS Mission Moment Pat Dillman Solemn Declaration Call to Worship: Psalm 100 Leader: Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the Earth. People: Serve the Lord with gladness; come into God s presence with singing. Leader: Know that the Lord is God. People: It is God who made us, to whom we belong; we are God s people, and the sheep of God s pasture. Leader: Enter God s gates with thanksgiving, and God s courts with praise. People: Give thanks and bless God s name. All: For the Lord is good; God s steadfast love endures forever, God s faithfulness to all generations. The People of God Confess Their Sins Act of Confession: Leader: Let us confess our sins to God. People: Gracious God, we confess that as children of your world we do not always act in ways pleasing to you. We get caught up in our own lives, making more time for petty things rather than the good you call us to do in this world. Forgive us when we unintentionally hurt those around us. Help us to make the changes necessary to live full lives in the ways of Jesus Christ. Bring us to greater understanding of your call for us so that we may do good works to better Your world. Silent Confession Kyrie: Leader: Lord, have mercy upon us. People: Lord, have mercy upon us. Leader: Christ, have mercy upon us. People: Christ, have mercy upon us. Leader: Lord, have mercy upon us. People: Lord, have mercy upon us. Assurance of Forgiveness: Leader: God forgives all of God s children, knowing that as humans we make mistakes. God shows us that the way to fullness of life is to live in the ways of God s own son, Jesus Christ. Follow the teachings of Jesus, knowing that the best way to show praise to God is by doing good works. God has strengthened us by God s word and has shown us the fullness of God s love for the world. Praise be to God; creator, redeemer, comforter. Please Be Seated
2 The People of God Share the Word of God The Holy Scriptures: Old Testament Lesson: Ecclesiastes 3:1-8a Page 537 Gospel Lesson: Matthew 21:1-11 Page 802 Sermon: Seasons of Faith VBS Program The People of God Pray Celebrations of Joy and Moments of Concern Leader: People: Leader: The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us pray. Pastoral Prayer Silent Prayer Lord s Prayer: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy Kingdom come. Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the Kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen. Sharing our Tithes and Offerings Invitation The Offering The Offertory: Happy Song VBS Kids The Offertory Response: Praise Him Praise Him, Praise Him, Praise Him in the morning, Praise Him in the noon time. Praise Him, Praise Him, Praise Him when the sun goes down. Offertory Prayer The People of God Go Forth In Mission Benediction Three-Fold Amen Hymn: Joyful, Joyful #2 Silent Moment Postlude: Organ Voluntary Purcell Preparation for Worship Nothing can separate us from your love, O Christ. We praise you for your mighty power and protection. Welcome Our fellowship is enriched by your presence. Thanks to each of you for being with us today! Stewardship Moment Givers Receive We do not give in order to get something back from God. That would be a form of spiritual selfishness likely to damage us more than help us. Yet, the Bible is clear in both the Old Testament and the New Testament that we will receive in the same measure that we give. Our offerings each week in worship do more than help with God s work. They also give God a chance to deliver on that promise from Scripture..

The scope and intensity of these disasters have left people devastated in many communities where there has been loss of life and destruction of homes and businesses. We cannot avoid feelings of concern and compassion. During the month of July, the Mission Committee will be collecting donations for and assembling EMERGENCY CLEAN-UP BUCKETS, which is a helpful solution organized through Church World Service. Our goal, with the help of St. John s congregation, is to assemble at least 20 buckets; and we hope that you ll join us by donating to this important project. The items needed for the buckets are posted on the announcement grid in the narthex. Please take as many option buckets from the grid as you would like. Pricing information and suggestions of where to purchase are included on the paper buckets. This information is provided simply as suggestions; however, the item descriptions are specific to CWS standards, in order to provide consistency at the disaster sites. Please return the items listed on your paper bucket(s) to the narthex by the end of July. The buckets will be delivered to Church World Service by members and friends of the Mission Committee during a work trip being planned for September. These buckets will help to replenish supplies at CWS and be shipped from there to victims of natural disasters. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Jo Davis at or Jo@JoDavis.com. Thank you in advance for your efforts and generosity. Mark Your Calendars! On Sunday, August 7 th, we will celebrate Holy Communion with St. John s Praise Team. Please join us for this musical service. Gemeinde Platz Thank you to this weeks sponsors, Richard and Nancy Miller. The sponsors for next Sunday are Sharon Kulikauskas and Donna Heck.
