1 First Presbyterian Church of Puyallup The Chimes JUNE 2017 VOLUME 65, ISSUE 5 Introducing Andy Maurice Andrew (Andy) Maurice is joining the staff of First Presbyterian as our new organist. Andy, an officer in the U.S. Navy, moved from Virginia to Port Orchard in December Andy, his wife Kristin, and their two children (ages 13 and 11) attend St. John s Episcopal Church in Gig Harbor. It is clear that Andy has answered his call to music ministry. Throughout his 16 year career in the Navy, he has continued to serve the Lord in an extensive array of positions. His passion for music in exemplified by playing the organ, singing, and choral directing. Sacred choral music and organ music hold a particularly important place in his heart. Ohio Handbell Choir in Concert On June 7, FPC will be hosting a concert by the youth handbell ensemble, Cast In Bronze, from Friendship United Methodist Church in Cincinnati, Ohio. Cast In Bronze will be on its fifth annual summer concert tour, having previously played concerts in 16 Midwest and Eastern states as well as presenting 12 full length programs in England and Scotland. They have also played in collaboration with the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra and the Cincinnati Symphony Youth Chorus. Music will include original handbell compositions old and new, sacred and secular arrangements, pops numbers and numbers featuring instrumental solos played by the ringers. The concert is free and open to the public. A free will offering will be taken to help defray the transportation costs of the tour which will include 8 evening concerts in Washington, Oregon, and California.

It s that time of year again to enjoy family, friends, and those fluffy delicious pancakes. Once again the Deacons will be preparing and serving up their traditional Father s Day Pancake Breakfast. Tickets are available for purchase after worship on June 4 and 11, and also at the door. Ticket prices are: $3 for 3-12 year olds, $6 for year olds, and FREE for those under 2 and over 90. In addition we will be using your admission ticket stubs to raffle off Starbucks gift cards. Breakfast will be served from 8:30 to 10:00 am. So mark your calendars, June 18, and have your appetites ready for some delicious food! Proceeds benefit the Board of Deacons and their community wide ministry of compassion.

3 Supper Club June 17th will be our final meeting until October. We will have a BBQ in the courtyard if the weather allows. Otherwise, we will be in the social hall. Bring a salad or dessert and the Cardens will provide the hotdogs. We will enjoy fellowship together and maybe a song or two if Bob is present. The festivities begin at 6:30 pm. We hope to see you there! June Page 3 Presbyterian Women As the year closes on our theme "May We Choose Love", we will celebrate with a potluck picnic on Monday, June 5th at noon. Please bring a dish to share at the potluck. Also during this gathering, our new leaders will be installed and we will thank our gentlemen helpers. Hope you will be there too. One last reminder that the Synod Gathering is June 1 3rd in Auburn at Black Diamond Camps. Laurie is attending the entire Gathering and Jane will be going on Friday for the entire day. If you want a ride, be at church at 8:00 am for carpooling. Jambassador Ministry Home canners, we need you! We have been blessed with several new faces and first time visitors here at FPC. As a result, our jam supply is beginning to run low. In order to keep our beloved Jambassador ministry going we will need more of your delicious jam! The Worship and Witness commission will supply the jars. Please see Gert Williams for more information. Calling All High School Seniors! We will be holding a Graduation Breakfast -- honoring you!! -- before worship on Sunday, June 11 at 9:00 am. You will want to wear your cap and gown for worship as you will receive special recognition during the church service and scholarships will be announced. Office News The church office hours are from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm, Monday through Friday. Please note, the office is closed most Wednesdays from 11:30 am -12:30 pm for a weekly staff meeting.

4 June Page 4 Children s Ministries Toys and More Sale Saturday, June 24th The children of FPC will be hosting a yard sale on Saturday, June 24th from 9:00 am until noon. The featured items will be toys and other kid related treasures. The event will take place on the FPC lawn so be sure to tell all of your friends and neighbors to stop by and support our youth. Proceeds from the sale will help to send our kids to Sound View Camp this summer. Sound View Camp Several of our children and youth are planning to attend Sound View Camp this summer during the July 30-August 5th session. A mini-camp is also available for those ages 6-9. When enrolling for camp, please be aware that our scholarship code is: puyallupfirst2017. First-time campers get a 10% discount (not mini campers) and there is also a 10% sibling discount for families with more than one child going. Each sibling gets the discount! Campers should register at: soundviewcamp.com Kurt Sample, director of Sound View, will be here after worship on June 11th to talk about camp and answer any answer questions you may have. Sound View is always on the lookout for helpers of any age, particularly those who can cut grass and help with camp maintenance. Don t be shy volunteer today!
