"Your Strong Suit" - Bible Study Series of Ephesians 6:10-18 continues this week, but it s not too late to join in the study, discussion, and fun! The fifth (of eight) session will take place Wednesday at 8:00pm in the church basement. MIDWEEK BIBLE STUDY- on Wednesday evenings (7pm) and Thursday mornings (10am) focuses on the Bible in a Year reading for the day. Come out and enjoy an hour of fellowship and discussion as we grow in our understanding of God s Word. From the Pregnancy Resource Center: We cannot thank you enough for your continued support. Join the Pregnancy Resource Center (PRC) at its annual Celebration Banquet on Thursday, November 8 th. We are very excited that the event will once again be held in the East Club at Heinz Field. The featured speaker for the evening will be Abby Johnson. Abby has always had a fierce determination to help women in need. It was this desire that both led Abby to a career with Planned Parenthood and caused her to flee the organization and become an outspoken advocate for the pro-life movement. This event makes it possible for the PRC to continue providing free pregnancy testing, ultrasounds and counseling for those facing difficult decisions. This banquet is being underwritten, so there is no charge to attend; however R.S.V.P. s are required. Call the PRC for more information at Thursday, November 8 th, East Club at Heinz Field. Business Attire. 7:00pm. Doors open at 6:15. BONFIRE EXTRAVAGANZA- Mark your calendars for the 26 th of October at 5:00pm! Zion is going to have a bonfire with food, piñata and facepainting for the kids, a pumpkin carving contest, and other games bring your friends, neighbors, strangers and people you meet on the way. Like salvation, it s absolutely free and for all. BOOTCAMP: There will be NO Bootcamp this Sunday. We will return the following week! PASTOR APPRECIATION DAY: Don t forget! TODAY is Pastor Appreciation Day! Remember to thank Pastor Duncan today and the rest of the year, too! Say thank you, pray for him, become his friend, honor his wife and family, or even buy him something special. Take time to show your appreciation today for those who are called by God and our church to lead us. 2

3 Welcome to worship! This week, I want to dedicate this space to our guests and visitors. We are very glad to have you worshiping with us this morning. We realize that there are any number of churches where you can worship and listen to the Gospel of Christ proclaimed. In visiting Zion, you have given us a sacred trust that we will proclaim the truth to you from the Scriptures and give you a chance to give thanks to God for all that He has given to you and to all. Our worship service is intentionally designed to keep the focus on the forgiveness of sins through faith in Jesus Christ. The service begins by giving you an opportunity to confess your sins and receive Christ s forgiveness. After receiving forgiveness, what better response than that of praise? After singing our praises, we offer God our prayers. After having spoken to God, we listen to Him speak to us through His Word as it is read. As a church, we are reading through the Bible in a Year. The sermon text comes from something we ve read in the previous week that the Pastor (or Pastoral Assistant) thinks is interesting and relevant. After hearing God s Word preached and the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ proclaimed, we stand together and confess the faith that has been taught. Our church uses three Creeds or statements of faith to summarize what we believe. The Creeds we use have been used by the church for 1500 years or more. The Creeds we use are the Apostles Creed, Nicene Creed and Athanasian Creed. After having received God s gifts of forgiveness, life and salvation through the absolution and in the proclamation of the Gospel in the sermon, we express our thanks to God and support for His Mission to bring all people to a knowledge of the Good News through the collection of our offerings. (As guests and visitors, we ask that you simply pass the plate; your presence among us is a gift far greater than any monetary donation you could make.) The final element of the worship service is Holy Communion (also called the Lord s Supper, the Eucharist, or the Sacrament of Christ s Body and Blood). It seems as though every church denomination has their own unique understanding and beliefs about Holy Communion; ours are given in the worship bulletin. We ask that you carefully and prayerfully read our statement of faith and practice concerning Holy Communion. For those familiar with the term, we practice Close Communion. After Holy Communion, the congregation we receives a blessing (or Benediction) from Scripture and responds with another song of praise. Introduction to Worship and Announcements Opening Hymn: Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing 686 The Invocation Confession of Sins In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. (Matthew 28:18-20) If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. But if we confess our sins, God is faithful and just to forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. (1 John 1:8-9) Silence for reflection and self-examination Almighty God, our maker and redeemer, we poor sinners confess unto You that we are by nature sinful and unclean and that we have sinned against You in thought, word, and deed. Wherefore we flee for refuge to Your infinite mercy, seeking and imploring Your grace for the sake of our Lord Jesus Christ. O most merciful God, who has given Your only-begotten Son to die for us, have mercy upon us and for His sake grant us remission of all our sins; and by Your Holy Spirit increase in us true knowledge of You and Your will and true obedience to Your Word, to the end that by Your grace we may come to everlasting life; through Jesus Christ, our Lord. The Service of the Word Old Testament Lesson: Ezekiel 3:1-15 And he said to me, Son of man, go to the house of Israel and speak with my words to them. For you are not sent to a people of foreign speech and a hard language, but to the house of Israel not to many peoples of foreign speech and a hard language, whose words you cannot understand. Surely, if I sent you to such, they would listen to you. But the house of Israel will not be willing to listen to you, for they are not willing to listen to me. Because all the house of Israel have a hard forehead and a stubborn heart. Behold, I have made your face as hard as their faces,

6 and your forehead as their foreheads. Like emery harder than flint have I made your forehead. Fear them not, nor be dismayed at their looks, for they are a rebellious house. Moreover, he said to me, Son of man, all my words that I shall speak to you receive in your heart, and hear with your ears. And go to the exiles, to your people, and speak to them and say to them, Thus says the Lord GOD, whether they hear or refuse to hear. Then the Spirit lifted me up, and I heard behind me the voice of a great earthquake: Blessed be the glory of the LORD from its place! It was the sound of the wings of the living creatures as they touched one another, and the sound of the wheels beside them, and the sound of a great earthquake. The Spirit lifted me up and took me away, and I went in bitterness in the heat of my spirit, the hand of the LORD being strong upon me. And I came to the exiles at Tel-abib, who were dwelling by the Chebar canal, and I sat where they were dwelling. And I sat there overwhelmed among them seven days. Choir Anthem (10:30) New Testament Lesson: 1 Peter 1:1-19 Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, To those who are elect exiles of the dispersion in Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia, according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, in the sanctification of the Spirit, for obedience to Jesus Christ and for sprinkling with his blood: May grace and peace be multiplied to you. Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you, who by God s power are being guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. In this you rejoice, though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been grieved by various 6

7 trials, so that the tested genuineness of your faith more precious than gold that perishes though it is tested by fire may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ. Though you have not seen him, you love him. Though you do not now see him, you believe in him and rejoice with joy that is inexpressible and filled with glory, obtaining the outcome of your faith, the salvation of your souls. Concerning this salvation, the prophets who prophesied about the grace that was to be yours searched and inquired carefully, inquiring what person or time the Spirit of Christ in them was indicating when he predicted the sufferings of Christ and the subsequent glories. It was revealed to them that they were serving not themselves but you, in the things that have now been announced to you through those who preached the good news to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven, things into which angels long to look. Therefore, preparing your minds for action, and being sober-minded, set your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ. As obedient children, do not be conformed to the passions of your former ignorance, but as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, since it is written, You shall be holy, for I am holy. And if you call on him as Father who judges impartially according to each one s deeds, conduct yourselves with fear throughout the time of your exile, knowing that you were ransomed from the futile ways inherited from your forefathers, not with perishable things such as silver or gold, but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without blemish or spot. 8 The Gospel Lesson: John 15:18-27 If the world hates you, know that it has hated me before it hated you. If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you. Remember the word that I said to you: A servant is not greater than his master. If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you. If they kept my word, they will also keep yours. But all these things they will do to you on account of my name, because they do not know him who sent me. If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not have been guilty of sin, but now they have no excuse for their sin. Whoever hates me hates my Father also. If I had not done among them the works that no one else did, they would not be guilty of sin, but now they have seen and hated both me and my Father. But the word that is written in their Law must be fulfilled: They hated me without a cause. But when the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth, who proceeds from the Father, he will bear witness about me. And you also will bear witness, because you have been with me from the beginning. (Please be seated) This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. The Children s Message The Sermon Hymn: Guide Me, O Thou Great Redeemer 918 Sermon (Please stand) The Creed: Apostles Creed I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He 8

9 ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. (Please be seated) The Collection of the Offering (Please stand) The Service of the Sacrament This morning we looked at passages from the Old Testament, Epistles and Gospels that talk about God s people being exiles. Away from the home without protection, exiles walk in danger all the way. This morning, Christ comes to us with his body and blood to reassure us that, while we are stranger and pilgrims on earth, we are not alone. He is with us through every step of life in this age, he will be with us in death, and he will most certainly be with us in the resurrection. Let us pray: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen. The Words of Institution The peace of the Lord be with you always. And also with you. 10 The Distribution We welcome to the Lord s Table all who have been baptized in the name of the Triune God, can examine themselves spiritually and believe they receive the true body and blood of the Lord Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of sins and as a profession of their faith. If you hold a profession of faith that differs from that of our congregation, please speak to the Pastor before the start of the service before communing. We believe the body and blood of Christ are truly present in the bread and wine. We believe Christ offers the forgiveness of sins in the Lord s Supper, but that the Lord s Supper is not necessary for salvation. We believe the Lord s Supper remembers the death of Christ and proclaims his death until he returns. We believe the Lord s Supper is a statement of unity in the body of Christ; we do not believe it creates that unity. During the distribution, you are encouraged to sing the Distribution Hymns, pray, or meditate on the words this is my body this is my blood, given for you. The cups at the center of the Individual Communion tray contain diluted wine for those with alcohol sensitivities. With saints of old, with saints to come, to You we lift our voice; To Father, Son, and Spirit blest be honor, love, and praise. Benediction The Lord bless you and keep you.
