2 Dear Friend in Christ, Invitation to the LOVE WHAT GOD GIVES YOU Series Beginning Weekend of I m really looking forward to a short-but meaningful 3-week sermon series called Love What God Gives You. The series focuses on three main points: Your Spirit Your Body Your Relationships Here are the dates and themes: Love What God Gives You: Your SPIRIT Love What God Gives You: Your BODY Love What God Gives You: Your RELATIONSHIPS This would be a great series to invite a friend to join you! Pastor Attending Special Professional Leaders Retreat at Sawmill Creek in Each there is a Professional Leaders Retreat at the Sawmill Creek Resort in Huron, Ohio for ELCA Lutheran Pastors and other Rostered Leaders from Northwestern Ohio. (We meet there and at that time because their facilities can handle our group and the conference rates are relatively inexpensive since is DEFINITELY the OFF season for tourism in Huron, Ohio!) This year s gathering is extra special for two reasons. First, the primary guest speaker this year is Bishop Elizabeth Eaton who is the Presiding Bishop of the ELCA. Also presenting at the conference is the Rev. Kevin Strickland who is the Director for in the ELCA. Both are very notable presenters. Second, this year the Northwestern Ohio Synod welcomes both the Eastern Ohio Synod and the Southern Ohio Synod to the gathering as well. In theory, that means every ELCA pastor and other ELCA-Rostered leaders in Ohio could be there. That won t happen, of course since not everyone will be able to make it. But it still will be very nice to touch base with pastors and other leaders that I haven t seen in quite some time. 2 17

3 It s also possible that I will lead a workshop on fitness or at least an exercise class while there. Plus, there s a breakout session on shared ministry this year just prior to the conference. The event is scheduled for (Tuesday-Thursday). Early Lent and Easter This Year Mark your calendars now Easter is on March 27 th this year and Lent begins with Ash Wednesday on February 10 th. Online Teachings by Pastor Kent Available It started out as a way for catechism students and parents to be able to learn and review the basics of the Christian faith together, much like Martin Luther originally intended when he wrote the small catechism. But now that some of these teaching videos have been created (with more being created almost every week), there s no reason why others can t check them out too as several Zion members have already done! As of now there is a meaty introduction to the 10 Commandments plus individual sessions on each of the first 4 commandments. More will follow. These teachings are available on the church website at www:zionlima.org. Just scroll down till you see the headline Online Teaching Videos by Pastor Kent. Update on Intern Ron I m pleased to report that former Zion Intern, Ron Philabaum, has been approved for Call as a pastor in the ELCA. I don t have the exact timeline but I believe in February he will be assigned to a geographic region in the United States and then, shortly thereafter, a particular synod within that region. At that point he will be available for call to a congregation within whatever synod he is assigned following the completion of his studies. Zion Media Equipment Woes and Opportunities We ve tried to put it off, but it appears that it s time for a much-needed upgrade of media equipment in the sanctuary. Most of our equipment is between 10 and 20 years old! The original projectors have died and one of the used temporary replacement projectors has broken down as well. That s why we are only using one screen at the moment. In addition, while some of the remaining equipment works, it s all old analog technology and, as you know, the world has gone digital. 16 3

4 So yes, while it would be technically possible to simply replace the projectors at this time and nothing else, we feel it would be more prudent in the long run to replace all of the major components at the same time - if we can find a way to swing it. Major items could include: --projectors roughly $6000 each) --screens for the newer HD/wide-format video roughly $2000 each) --video mixer which we use to smoothly switch between input sources (roughly $4000) --camera because the current camera is standard-definition format and has some issues (roughly $3000) Optional additional items: --65 or 70 inch TV mounted at base of balcony so leaders can see what s on the screens from the front of the sanctuary (roughly $2000 with mounting and is highly recommended) --Center-mounted remote-controlled camera (Roughly $5500) --New soundboard since the current one is over 15 years old (roughly $3600) As you can see, it can add up fast. We do have some church funds that we might be able to designate for this purpose, but that might be a stretch since we just remodeled the sanctuary last year. So if you have some interest in contributing toward one or more of these components, all help is appreciated. Thank you! Looking Ahead to a Very Special Synod Assembly, May Each year the pastors and two or three voting members from each ELCA congregation in Northwestern Ohio gather for worship, fellowship, education, and to conduct the business of the synod. But this year s focus includes an additional dimension After 18 years and three terms in office, Bishop Marcus C. Lohrmann has decided to retire rather than be available for election to a fourth term. Bishop Lohrmann is deeply appreciated in this synod, so much so that there were no serious challengers at the last two elections. This year it s anybody s guess and prayer for who will be called to serve as Bishop for the next 6-year term. But Zion and other ELCA congregations in Northwestern Ohio Synod will have two opportunities to participate in the election process. First, in congregations will receive information on how to lift up names of potential candidates. Second, congregations will select and send voting members to the synod assembly. They chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Spirit, Philip, Prochorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and Nicolaus, a proselyte of Antioch. The congregation presented these men to the apostles. When the apostles had prayed, they laid their hands on the chosen men. The disciples realized that there was much to be done. Because they were called to prayer and the word and they were unable to respond to many of the requests they received. To care for those in needs they appointed seven deacons, the first being Stephen who is the inspiration for our ministry. The Christ centered nature of Stephen Ministry is reflected in the logo. The broken person behind the cross and the whole person in front of the cross symbolize that we are all broken people and it is only through Jesus that we can be made whole. As we come to the end of our second year of ministry, we rejoice in the opportunity that we have had to grow spiritually and to offer a listening ear and compassionate heart to our fellow Christians. In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now, being confident of this, that he who began good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.
