2 ADVENT: THE JESSE TREE AND THE O ANTIPHONS T he Jesse Tree celebrates the history of God s loving action in our world, leading up to the birth of Christ. This striking symbol is based on the prophecy of Isaiah: A shoot shall come out from the stump of Jesse, and a branch shall grow out of his roots. The Jesse Tree bears symbols of the most significant manifestations of God s saving power down through history. Dozens of the key events of Hebrew salvation history are represented, including Noah s Ark, the Burning Bush, the Ten Commandments, Jacob s Ladder, Joseph s Coat and the Key of David. The seven O Antiphons are part of the Divine Office, the official daily prayer of the Church. They have been traditionally sung during evening prayer on the seven days before Christmas Eve. Each antiphon begins with the letter O followed by one of the biblical names for Christ: O Wisdom, O Lord, O Root of Jesse, O Key of David, O Orient, O King of the Gentiles, and O Emmanuel. These beautiful prayers provide the lyrics for the most famous of all Advent hymns: O come, O come, Emmanuel. Advent is a time of waiting and preparation. It is a season of giving. Many places have a giving tree, where people can find lists of things that they could bring to be given away. At our parish, we have the Christmas Food Baskets. We are still looking for food items or cash donations toward this program. A list of things needed is on page 4 of this parish bulletin. We also need lots of volunteers to pack and to deliver. This is also the time of annual giving. I know that some of you give your one-time donations to the Church at this time of the year. If you are considering any type of year-end financial contributions to St. Francis Church, I humbly request that you assign those donations to debt retirement, clearly specifying it on the memo line of the check. We are only about $130,000 short of our goal for I would also suggest that you make your Christmas Mass tithing this year toward debt retirement Fulfilling the Past. One hundred percent of your donation to debt retirement goes toward it. Thank you for your generosity during this season of giving. We will celebrate the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe on Tuesday, the 12th. Mananitas will be at 5 a.m. at the 27th Street Church. Then the procession will begin at 3 p.m. from Pilot Butte, and the Mass will be at 5 p.m., followed by festivities. All are invited to take part in the celebrations to honor the Patroness of the Americas. Father Jose Thomas

4 Here is how you can help: F UNDING THE F UTURE... F ULFILLING THE P AST Thank you to the 198 families who have returned their 2018 Stewardship envelopes! Your generosity is outstanding! Your gifts will help the parish fulfill its mission, reduce its debt, and make Fr. Jose s vision a reality. To date, we have $460,047 pledged toward the 2017 goal of $600,000 to reduce the debt. Between , we have another $475,528 pledged to reduce the debt for a grand total of $935,575. We have also raised $280,964 toward next year s $1.5 million operating budget. There is still a long way to go! Return your stewardship card if you have not yet done so. Put it in the Offertory basket or mail it to the Parish Office. Make your gifts through Online Giving. Just go to the parish Website at: stfrancisbend.org, scroll down toward the bottom and click the Online Giving link. If you continue to use envelopes, be sure to make up for any gifts you miss because of an absence. Thank you for sharing so generously and faithfully with your parish community! Debt Reduction Goal Debt Reduction $600,000 Goal for by End December of December 31, 2017 = $600,000 $460,047 pledged to date $400,020 received to date Christmas Food Drive St. Francis Parish will be Santa Claus to 100 families and more than 300 kids next weekend through combined efforts and donations from area businesses, St. Vincent de Paul, Toys for Tots, Ed and Karen Jarrett, and St. Francis School. We provide lots of groceries, toys, candy-filled stockings, and the true Spirit of Christmas to some in need in the Bend area. Applications to receive are still available at the Parish Office. Please continue to bring in food, toiletries, and paper-product donations of any kind to the Historic Church and the Parish Office through Thursday, December 14th. Cash $$$ donations are also greatly appreciated! We Need Your Help! Volunteer This Week: Monday Thursday, December 11 14th. We need shoppers anytime this week for an hour or two. You will be given a detailed list and the funds to pay for the items on the list. Everything that wasn't donated must now be purchased. Friday, December 15th, is Packing Day: Packing starts at 1 p.m. The mountains of food are laid out in the Community Center. This is about a 2-hour job with many hands. 5 ST. FRANCIS PARISH LIFE Annual Retirement Collection Grief Support Ministry The Diocese of Baker Religious Retirement Collection is this weekend, December 9th and 10th. The Diocesan Pension Plan is significantly underfunded; therefore, the Diocese will again allocate the majority of this collection to the Priests Retirement Program. We will continue to support the religious sisters and brothers who have served in our Diocese by remitting a portion of this collection to the national office. Thank you for your generosity and support. Hopes and Wishes Day Please join us at the Bethlehem Inn today, December 10th, anytime between 2 to 4 p.m., to write your hopes and wishes for future families on the walls of our new facility located at 3705 N. Hwy. 97 here in Bend. Fr. Flavian Passes Away Capuchin Brother Fr. Flavian Patrick Welstead died peacefully on December 4th in Burlingame, CA. A funeral Mass will be held on Tuesday, December 12th, at 10 a.m., at Our Lady of Angels Church in Burlingame. Blood Drive The Annual Blood Drive is on Thursday, December 28th, from noon to 6 p.m., in the Parish Community Center. Blood Pressure Clinic Stop in to have your blood pressure checked by the members of the St. Francis Health Ministry next Sunday, December 17th, after the 10 a.m. Mass, in the RCIA Room. There is a Blood Pressure Clinic held every third Sunday of the month from September to May. Parish Advent Penance Service Repent! This is one of the Advent messages proclaimed by St. John the Baptist. We will have the opportunity to live this message by going to Confession at the Parish Advent Penance Service on Tuesday, December 19th, at 6:30 p.m., at the 27th St. Church. There will be 6 or 7 priests available to hear Confessions. What better way is there to prepare the way for the Lord than going to Confession? Deacon Stephen McGlone Holidays are often a difficult time of the year, especially for those who have lost a spouse. Forty percent of all sales will go to the St. Francis Building Fund.
