5 First Baptist's Associate Pastor Former Math Major Studies For Ministry By JIM LAUGHTER Herald Staff Writer Five years ago, Sti;:\'.e Wil- ~entered Wake Forest University with every intention of studying mathematics. A few days ago, Steve assumed his new duties as associate pastor of the First Baptist Church of Smithfield. From the objective and impersonal world of numbers to the subjective and highly personal world of religion-his change in career directions was drastic. The 23-year-old Winston-Salem native knows when the change occurred, but he's not prepared to explain why. "I decided to major in religion at the end of my freshman year," Steve recalled. "It was a. call you can't describe with words." Almost a year ago, he was married to Marcia Lowe, a Waynesville native who has spent most of her 21 years in Winston-Salem. The young couple lived in Wake Forest this past school year, where Steve is working on his master's degree in religious education at the Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary. It's not nearly as big as Winston, but it's bigger than Wake Forest-just the right size to get to know a lot of people." Steve came to Smithfield to serve with the Rev. John Ryberg, pastor of First Baptist. He replaces the Rev. Bill Stillerman, associate pastor of the church for almost four years. Mr. Stillerman accepted a pastorate in Mt. Gilead this spring. "I've found this to be a very dynamic church," the new as. sociate pastor said. "The church is fortunate to have Mr. Ryberg as pastor. At the same time, Mr. Ryberg is fortunate to have such an unusual church." He explained his use of the adjective "unusual" with the observation: "Too many churches today are isolated from worldly concerns. They refuse to come to grips with any number of political, social, and eco- ~ nomic issues.' "The racial issue is a good example," he continued. "The way it looks, the church will be the last major institution to intergrate." "Divided On War" He believes Christianity has had virtually no effect on a more global issue. "The church is too divided on war," Steve said. "As long as you have Christian hawks and Christian doves, no effective action is pos-. Sible." He went on: "Sex education is another area ignored by too many churches. True, this is basically a responsibility of parents, but churches are made up of all members of the family. With this or any other type of Christian education, the home needs the church and the church needs the home.'' He elaborated on the homechurch relationship: "Most parents today have a misconception regarding the institution primarily responsible for the religious education of their children. The church should never replace the home as the basic institution for the religious education of children. It should assume a supporting role. Parents have many advantages over other types of teachers, but they need guidance in this area. Parents need to realize that religion is more easily caught than taught.'' The new associate pastor comes from a large home. He is the fifth of eight children, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles F. Williams of Winston-Salem. His wife is the second of three children, a daughter of Mrs. ed by a sense of balance, a desire to avoid the extremes of the human experience. This outlook is mirrored in his observations on the so-called "Jesus Movement" that has attracted so many American young people. "The movement has excell.ent potential, but it must be channeled in the right direction," Steve said. "Extreme emotionalism is as unhealthy as extreme intellectualism. These young people need more guidance, a better theological understanding of the things they are expressing." Steve's not sure his future includes the pulpit. "Right now, I'm leaning toward an educational ministry," he explained. "But I still have a year and a half of school before I receive my master's, and I won't have to decide until then. I enjoy teaching, and this job involves a lot of that." In addition to assisting Mr. Registered Nurse Ryberg with worship services, Marcia is a registered nurse, visitation, and administration, a 1971 graduate of Forsyth the associate pastor will direct Memorial Hospital School of a number of youth programs at Nursing. "My father was a lay minister for years," Marcia explained. "For as long as I can remember, I've been involved with church programs in one way or another. 6 Steve Williams To Be Ordained Steve Williams, associate pastor of the First Baptist Church of Smithfield, will be ordainehto 'the Baptist ministry during a special ordination service at 4 p.m. Sunday (October 12) in the church sanctuary. The Rev. John Ryberg, pastor of the church, will deliver the ordination sermon. Taking his text from I Corinthians, Mr. Ryberg will speak on "The Foolishness of Preaching." Two other area Baptist leaders will also participate. The Rev, Colin Harris, prof CSSOI' of religious education at Southeastern Baptist Seminary in Wake Forest, will bring a charge to the minister. And the Rev. N. R. Demchak, pastor of Crestwood Baptist Church, will bring a charge to the church. Mr. Williams, who has been at First Baptist since May of 1973, completed his undergraduate work at Wake- Forest University. This past spring he completed work on a master's degree in religious education at Southeastern Seminary. He and his wife Marsha make their home on Davis Street in Smithfield.
