THE ANGLICAN CHURCH WAS INITIALLY KNOWN AS CELTIC CHURCH BECAUSE IT WAS FORMED BY THE CELTIC PEOPLE OR THE GAULS (PEOPLE FROM TURKEY & FRANCE ) CELTIC MEANS GALLI
- The cross represent Christianity - Circle represent Celtic world view
John AD 30 (The Apostle that Jesus loved) > Pothinus and Polycarp AD 90 > Irenaus AD 150 > Gauls to Britain AD 200 > Celtic Church in Britain formally established before Constantine AD 315
CHURCH IN ENGALND Apostolic ministry (which means preaching, teaching, praying, worshiping, and serving in the same ways that Jesus own disciples did) birthed the Church in England within decades after Jesus Resurrection. Celtic Church (ANGLICAN)formally established in 315 and fused with the Church in Rome in 664 during the synod of Whitby. CHURCH OF ENGALND Un-fusing of the English Church from the Church in Rome1533 (Henry VIII & Cranmer) CHURCH FROM ENGLAND At the beginning of colonization and through missionaries
Father of true Anglicanism = Richard Hooker ( ) Spiritual Master of Anglicanism = Lancelot Andrews ( )
The Great Bible The Great Bible was the first authorized edition of the Bible in English, authorized by King Henry VIII of England to be read aloud in the church services of the Church of England in 1538 The Bishop s Bible The Bishops' Bible is an English translation of the Bible which was produced under the authority of the established Church of England in 1568 & revised in 1572 King James Bible The revised edition of Bishop s Bible was to be prescribed as the base text for the Authorized King James Version of 1611
Liturgical and biblical, rooted in common, communal, daily prayer (Morning Prayer, Noonday prayer, Evening Prayer) Communal. Communal prayer comes before personal prayer and shapes personal prayer Sacramental. Anglicans view the sacraments as "outward and visible signs of inward and spiritual grace." Through Baptism we become participants in a community of faith. Through the Eucharist, we become participants in the life of God. Pastoral. Devotion to God and pastoral concern and service to our neighbours go together Incarnational Mystical. Here "mystical" is used in contradistinction to "pietism." Pietism refers to a spirituality involving an acute, immediate, life-changing experience of God, and Mystical refers to a spirituality involving a slow journey to union with God. "Mysticism... sees the union with God as the end of an ascent, requiring discipline, purgation, study, emptying and patience." (Urban Holmes, in Chapter 9 "Spirituality" in What is Anglicanism, Morehouse Publishing, Harrisburg, 1982) (Note: this definition of "mystical" is not the definition used by all)
16th Century The Book of Common Prayer: Meant to be not just a service book but a guide for all aspects Christian living. To the seventeenth-century layman the Prayer Book was not a shiny volume to be borrowed from the shelf on entering the church and carefully replaced on leaving. BUT It was a beloved and battered personal possession, a lifelong companion and guide, to be carried from church to kitchen, to living room, to bedside table. - Martin Thornton
Anglican Ministry = Knowledge + Spirituality + Discipline BENFITS OF THE APB/BOCP: Doctrine: The BCP teaches the essentials of the Christian faith. Discipline: The BCP shapes the worship of the community. Anglicanism is not a congregational denomination. It is a worldwide Communion. This means our goal is to have in common - as much as possible - the manner in which we go about worshiping God. Devotion: The BCP nurtures spirituality in the Anglican way. These corporate disciplines help to give Anglicanism a worldwide identity and sense of community. Anglican spirituality guides corporate worship and also personal piety (that s a word that means - your beliefs, character, and lifestyle). Anglicans are shaped and nurtured not just for our own sake, but for the sake of the world. EXERCISE: APB - EUCHARISTIC SERVICE
Scripture Tradition Reason
Scripture the oracle of God but scripture is read: in the light of human understanding and experience ( reason ) in the context of a tradition of worship and belief

NB: In Anglicanism, the word Mass has been a taboo since the 16 th century. Eucharist is the right word. This was adopted by the WCC in 1982 & recommended that all churches follow suit In the Eucharist, we thank God for the gift of the sacrifice that was done by Jesus many years ago. Anglican theology is that Jesus has been crucified once and we cannot crucify Him afresh during the Eucharist. In the Mass, the Roman Catholics theology states that the priest is crucifying/offering Jesus all over again (afresh). Mass (Latin) means missa est (dismissal prayer).
ICTHUS : The Greek word for fish I = Jesus, C = Christ, TH = God's, U = Son, S = Saviour
DATING OF THE EASTER EUCHARIST TONSURE
ROME Integrate the power of the Church and the power of the State. Building a hierarchical ecclesiology Conformity and uniformity Viewed Spirituality as avoidance of civic duty Romans worked toward more complex rituals Rome decreed three Bishops were to take part in the consecration of a new Bishop CELTIC (ANGLICAN) Egalitarian and including gender. Consisting more of associations of social groups Allowing for diversity within orthodoxy (United in Diversity but NOT losing the identity) Ascetic and monastic. Embraced the Desert spirituality Celts loved nature and a simpler approach to liturgy The Celts were content with one bishop when consecrating a Bishop but followed the Roman approach
Read Mark 7:16 (English, Greek and Russian only) Any Bible version except King James Bible (Authorised Version) Psalm 145:13
