8 Workshop Descriptions 1. TO BE NEAR GOD IS MY HAPPINESS : DISCERNMENT, FORMATION AND THE CONTEMPLATIVE LIFE Isaac Slater, OCSO What distinctive challenges and insights does the contemplative life offer people today? What are some elements of a monastic approach to discernment and formation and how might they be applied to religious life in general? While a cloistered life in silence seems full of constraints, the practices of monastic life are best understood as means to cultivate and stay faithful to one s deepest heart s desire. Rev. Isaac (John) Slater, originally from Markham Ont., has been a Trappist monk at the Abbey of the Genesee, near Rochester NY, for the last 14 years. He currently serves as prior and infirmarian. A book on Bernard of Clairvaux is forthcoming. 2. CHALLENGES TO COMMUNITIES: DIVERSITY AND GENERATION GAPS Anne M. Walsh We take it almost as a platitude that our civic and religious communities are becoming more and more diverse, in ethnicity, in ecclesiology, in religious experience, and in the generations that comprise these communities. In this session, the participants will explore their experience of diversity, and how with dialogue and respect-- diversity can be celebrated and truly become a means of enrichment for and within community. 9 3. HEARING THE ONE VOICE: CIRCLES OF DISCERNMENT IN EXPLORING VOCATIONS Brenda Peddigrew, RSM In this one-and-a-half hour workshop, Brenda Peddigrew, RSM (NL) will frame the work of how Vocation Directors discern with a candidate, community members, and Leadership Teams whether an individual is a match for the community. How to call for, establish, facilitate and participate in a Circle of Discernment is the focus of this workshop. Brenda Peddigrew has been a Sister of Mercy of Newfoundland for 46 years. The earliest parts of her ministry included being a high school teacher, Vocation Director, Director of Adult Faith Development for the Archdiocese of St. John's, and spiritual direction. For the past 23 years she has lived in Ontario and travelled to facilitate Chapters, Assemblies and Retreats internationally. Presently, Brenda lives in the Algonquin Highlands, ON, where she treasures the abiding presence of nature in all seasons, and loves to kayak, bike, ski and snowshoe. She is the writer of five books, three of poetry, one of nature essays, and Original Fire: the Hidden Heart of Religious Women, which was written from her doctoral thesis in transformative learning. 4. EVANGELIZATION AND CATECHESIS WITH AND AMONG ADULTS ANNE M. WALSH We hear so much today about The New Evangelization. What does this really mean? What is evangelization? and how do we catechize adults in this time and place? What catechetical needs are we discerning among the candidates who present themselves for formation with religious institutes and those who present themselves as associates or affiliates? In this session, participants will enter into a dialogue and exploration of these other, related questions. Although most vocation ministers see the value of intra-congregational awareness and collaboration as essential to contemporary vocation ministry, how to do it well requires both skills and a common commitment to its goals. This workshop will outline the practical requirements necessary for religious congregations to work well together in successfully promoting religious life and in discerning with prospective candidates. (See description in #2 for Anne s biography)
