1 GST 520 DISPENSATIONALISM and DISPENSATIONAL HERMENEUTICS Summer 2017 Dr. Larry R. Oats This course is a study of the dispensations and covenants, the relationship between law and grace, and dispensationalism as a hermeneutical method. The course includes a study of the history, theory, and practical use of grammaticalhistorical interpretation. (3 credit hours) COURSE OBJECTIVES The purpose of this course is to study dispensationalism, both as a history of God s redemptive work and as a hermeneutical system. Several aspects of dispensationalism will be addressed: its historical development, its interpretation of biblical history, the relationship of covenants to dispensations, arguments raised against dispensationalism, the hermeneutics of dispensationalism as they relate to pretribulational and premillennial eschatology, the relationship of law and grace, major events that unfold in particular dispensations, and current trends in dispensational theology. MBU INSTITUTIONAL OUTCOMES supported by this course: 1. Communication Skills: Students will demonstrate competence in written, oral, and aesthetic communication. 2. Critical Thinking: Students will apply a framework for logical decisionmaking in various contexts. 3. Biblical Knowledge: Students will acquire skills related to biblical study methods, interpretation, and doctrine. 4. Biblical World View: students will articulate a world view that will tie all fields of study to the Scriptures to the praise of His glory.

2 STUDENT OUTCOMES. By the end of the course, the students should be able to: 1. Understand and appreciate dispensationalism, both as a view of history and as a method of interpretation of Scripture. 2. Have a better exposure to dispensational literature. 3. Demonstrate critical theological thinking from a dispensationalism framework. Critical theological thinking involves the ability to formulate comprehensive theological description, definitions, and argumentation based on accurate analysis and scholarly synthesis of Scripture (exegesis and Biblical theology), with the goal of understanding theological tradition and present day theological views. 4. Have a better understanding of general hermeneutical principles. 5. Be introduced to the dangers in modern approaches to hermeneutics. TEXTBOOK READING: Required: Charles C. Ryrie. Dispensationalism. Chicago: Moody Press, (Entire book) Alva J. McClain. Law and Grace. BMH Books. (Entire book) Robert Thomas. Evangelical Hermeneutics: The New Versus the Old. Grand Rapids: Kregel, Chaps 1-3, 5-7, 12. Henry A. Virkler and Karelynne Ayayo. Hermeneutics: Principles and Processes of Biblical Interpretation. Grand Rapids: Baker, Chapters 1-7. Recommended: Herbert W. Bateman, ed. Three Central Issues in Contemporary Dispensationalism. Kregel, Witherington, Ben III. The Problem with Evangelical Theology. Waco, TX: Baylor Univ Press, (Pages , especially please note that Witherington is opposed to dispensationalism; this reading is one of the better examples of the opposition to dispensational hermeneutics) READING REPORT All required reading, reading done in the course of research for your paper and personal reading in areas of interest in the field of dispensationalism should be recorded and reported. Report your reading by submitting a list of books and the pages read in each book, along with a total number of pages read. The grand total should be at least 1200

3 pages. An Excel reading report and a PDF reading report can be found in the Research Module. Use either one. DISPENSATIONALISM OUTLINE A course outline prepared by the Professor is required for the course. Class lectures and discussion will be based on the textbooks, syllabus and other notes that may be presented in class. HERMENEUTICS SUMMARIES Your hermeneutics summaries will consist of two elements. 1. Read Henry A. Virkler and Karelynne Ayayo, Hermeneutics: Principles and Processes of Biblical Interpretation, according to the class calendar on my.maranatha. Summarize the key points of each chapter in bullet format (at least 5 main points per chapter); each bullet should consist of 2-3 sentences. 2. Then read Robert Thomas, Evangelical Hermeneutics: The New Versus the Old, according to the class calendar. Summarize the key points of each chapter in bullet format (at least 5 main points per chapter); each bullet should consist of 2-3 sentences. DEVOTIONALS Each student will write two devotionals based on some dispensational truth, not connected to the research paper. Follow the template in the Research Module. The first draft of these will be posted to MyMaranatha. Critique at least two of your fellow students devotionals, identifying their strength and weaknesses, and suggesting ways to improve the devotional. See the Class Chart for due dates. RESEARCH PAPER A scholarly theological research paper on some topic or problem within Dispensationalism is required. The student is free to choose his own topic. Check with the Professor regarding your choice of topic. Follow the Maranatha Guide. The paper should be pages of text, with footnotes. The grade will be based on: (1) Intellectual content (including a clear declaration of the issue under discussion, a fair representation of the various approaches to the issue, a biblical, exegetical and theological solution to the problem, and an explanation of the impact on the current

5 A Critique of a particular article or chapter in a significant book on Dispensationalism (Check with the Professor first) FINAL EXAM A final exam will be placed on our MyMaranatha class site. LATE WORK: You are now studying at a graduate level; expectations are, therefore, high. The Seminary expects you to perform your academic work in a timely fashion. The development of time management skills while in Seminary will greatly benefit you in the future, both in your personal life and in your ministry. Ministry involves managing numerous activities at one time. You are preparing for a life ministry which will focus primarily on serving people. This demands a serious consideration of your own schedule and the schedules of those whom you serve. To encourage you in the development and strengthening of your time management skills, the Seminary has established a Late Academic Work Policy. This policy is the minimum penalty for work not turned in on time. The professor may impose a greater penalty, but not a lesser. Work not turned in on the day it is due will have its grade reduced 4% for each calendar day that it is late. The Seminary realizes that serious extenuating circumstances, such as a lengthy illness or a death in the family, may prevent some students from completing class projects on time. Requests for appropriate extensions for these types of serious circumstances may be made to the Seminary Academic Senate, via a written petition submitted to the Seminary Office. Extensions will only be given for valid excuses. Everyone is busy; therefore, being busy is not an excuse for an extension. Projects turned in under an allowed extension will not be graded higher than a B. ADA Statement: The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) is a federal anti-discrimination statute that provides comprehensive civil rights protection for persons with disabilities. Among other things, the law requires that all students with disabilities be given a learning environment that provides for reasonable accommodation of their disabilities. If you believe you have a disability requiring an accommodation, please contact the Learning Assistance Program Director, in Old Main Room 207, (ph. 920/ ) or learningassistance@mbu.edu.
