1 GORDON-CONWELL/COGOP CONSORTIUM Miami #1, Florida May 27-31, 2015 TH 504 Systematic Theology I Professor: Héctor Ortiz, Ph.D. Telephone: hortiz@cogop.org Course Objectives To enhance the students defining and clarifying his or her credo in light of the Holy Text in relation to its teachings on the Doctrine of the Holy Scripture, the Doctrine of God, the Doctrine of Man and the Doctrine of the Person of Christ. A. To better understand in whom one has believed (2 Tim. 1:12) B. To enlarge ones understanding in what he or she believes (1 Tim. 4:16) C. To be better prepared to explain to others the reasons of the hope of the gospel (1 Peter 3:15) Required Texts 1. The Holy Bible Read the Gospel of John, Romans, Ephesians, and 1 and II Timothy. 2. Erickson, Millard J. Introducing Christian Doctrine, edited by L. Arnold Hustad. Grand Rapids, MI: Baker Book House, ISBN Enns, Paul. The Moody Handbook of Theology. Chicago: Moody Press, 1989 or 2008, ISBN Ortiz, Hector. The Living Word. Read all except the last chapter. This book can be purchased through the GCTS/ACTS office at the International Offices. The price is $ A Theological Workbook will be furnished. The price is $7.00. Course Requirements A. Attendance and participation are mandatory. B. Participation in assigned study groups is the responsibility to oneself, but also to the other members of the class. 1

2 C. Pre-Class Assignments 1. Read the following Bible books: the Gospel of John, Romans, Ephesians and I and II Timothy, giving due attention to theological terms and concepts. 2. Read the following sections in Millard J. Erickson s book: Part 2, God s Revelation (and His Holy Word) Part 3, Nature of God Part 5, Humanity Part 7, The Person of Christ Refer to the Index and read the pages that deal with Calvinism and Arminianism 3. Read the following in Paul Enns book: In Part 2 Introduction to Systematic Theology Bibliology: Doctrine of the Bible Theology Proper: Doctrine of God Christology: Doctrine of Christ Anthropology: Doctrine of Man In Part 4 Calvinistic Theology Arminian Theology Use the index to locate and read additional information on Calvinism and Arminianism 4. Read Hector Ortiz s book, The Living Word, except the last chapter. 5. Using Paul Enn s book, write a two page, double-spaced paper on Calvinistic theology and a two page, double-spaced paper on Arminian theology. These two papers should be turned in on the first day of the class, August 5, D. The reading log should be turned in the first day of class. E. Residency Focus Program May 29 Calvinistic Theology May 30 Arminian Theology F. Post-Class Assignment: Final paper will be a Theological Concept paper of 8 pages double-spaced on one of the following subjects: Bibliology, theology proper, anthropology, or Christology. The final paper must manifest a clear understanding of the different components that make up the respective area of research. The final paper should be based on class lecture, course required reading, bibliographical resources, and your personal investigation. This is a research paper; not a sermon or a testimony. Final paper will be due August 7,

3 Important Information Attendance: This course is taught in an intensive mode and, therefore, it is necessary to be in attendance every day! This means that all written assignments are to reflect the student s own work and to be submitted for credit only in this course. Where other secondary sources are used, appropriate dependence with the proper use of footnotes must be adhered to. Relative to the entire course of study, it must be assumed that cheating and plagiarism are sins contrary to God s laws and the mission of Gordon-Conwell. Plagiarism is using the intellectual property of others without proper citation, giving the impression that it is the student s own work. Be aware that if assignments are discovered to contain plagiarized materials, the assignment will be failed.
