Some attention will also be given to Covenant Theology, which stands in contrast to a Dispensational approach to the Scriptures. This class emphasizes s consistent literal approach to Bible interpretation. Class Objectives: Student will be able to articulate the major distinctions of a Student will embrace a historical, grammatical method of Biblical interpretation Student will understand the difference between Israel and the church Student will understand and embrace a pre-dispensational, premillennial view of eschatology Student will be able to produce a dispensational chart setting forth the 7 dispensations laid forth in the class along with future events including the Rapture, Tribulation, Millennium, Bema Seat, Marriage Supper of the Lamb, 2 nd coming of Christ, Great White Throne judgment and eternity. Class Textbooks/Semester Reading: Ryrie, Charles., Chicago: Moody Press, Showers, Renald E. There Really Is A Difference! : A Comparison of Covenant and Dispensational Theology. Institutional Mission Statement: Fairview Baptist Bible Colleges exists to train competent, compassionate, effective servant leaders for the ministry of Christ in the local churches of Jamaica, the Caribbean, and the world. How this class contributes to fulfilling the Mission Statement: This course is designed to equip students to understand the importance of the grammatical, historical method in interpreting Scripture. The student will gain competency in teaching and defending the Biblical distinction between Israel and the church as well as a pretribulational, premillennial eschatology. 1
2 Class Requirements. All assignments are due on the date assigned at the beginning of class. 1. Research Paper. Each student will be assigned to write on a dispensational topic as assigned by the instructor. The form of the paper must be according the Guidelines for Writing Research Papers at the Fairview Baptist Bible College. It should be 6-8 pages with proper documentation from at least 6 credible sources. Note: Each author s work counts as one source. If you use one book that has two or more authors, it would count as 2 or more sources if you were quoting different authors. 2. Daily Quizzes. Most class period will begin with a quiz covering the materials from the previous day s class. 3. Final Exam. The final exam will cover the materials covered in the class and assigned text book. A study guide will be provided. 4. Reading: Every student must read in its entirety by Dr. Ryrie. This must be completed prior to the last day of class. 4. Additional Reading: Each student will be required to read 350 pages and keep a reading log of pages read. Every student must read in its entirety by Dr. Ryrie. Reading will included the assigned textbook, journal articles and all reading related to the research paper. Reading log is attached 5. Journal Article assignment. Students are to read the footnotes in all journal articles and books. See instructions at the end of the syllabus. Select two of the articles, but you must have approval from the instructor. Is there information about him/her contained in the article? What does that information (and the academic journal itself) tell you about the theological perspective of the author? Topic Questions 3. What is the topic of the article? Demonstrate you understand it in your answer (note: you are not simply to give the title). 4. What position is the author arguing for? Source Questions (see page 5 in your Guide for Writing Research Papers at the Fairview Baptist Bible College ) 5. The Advocacy sources: What other writers does the author mention in support of his/her view? What documentation does the author use from these writers? 6. The Contra sources: What other writers does the author mention against his/her view? What documentation does the author use from these writers? 7. The Objective-Scholarly source: What other scholars does the author mention that are neutral toward the position that the author of your article is arguing for? How do you know these are neutral? What documentation does the author use from these scholars? 8. Comment on the author s use of footnotes and the argumentation s/he includes in the footnotes.
