A Carol For Advent Thoughts for the Advent Season are so well expressed in Carol For Advent by Nancy Price and Don Besig. I chose to share this with you for this Advent Season Magnet. Amid the winter s cold embrace, clothed in a shroud of white, and anxious world in silence waits through the dark of night. As the lonely song of a chores echoes across the sky above we can feel the moment is near; soon the child of Peace will appear. What Child is this, the world awaits with quiet expectation. When will He come-the promised One, to bring us peace and salvation? Raise, raise your prayers on high-prepare His way- the time is nigh. Come, come, Emanuel, O Child of Love and Peace. The air grows colder, the light grows dim, dark nig the sky above. But soon the chill of the winter wind will warm with God s gift of love. And a star will brighten the sky, songs of joy will echo on high! We will know the moment is here. The Child of Love and Peace will appear. Blessings of the Season! VF 4
5 NEW YEAR S RESOLUTIONS For many people, the start of a new year brings new enthusiasm, a new outlook, and many times, new fitness goals. This will be the year they finally quit smoking, shed unwanted pounds, or start an exercise program. According to a Health magazine study, however, only 46 percent of people who make fitness related New Year's resolutions have maintained their goals just six months later. This is because many people tend to make unrealistic resolutions. People who write down their short-term goals tend to be more successful than those who simply make a resolution. Writing a goal down is important because it helps people remain accountable to themselves, and thus, helps them maintain consistency through a long period. Use the SMART principle of goal setting. SMART is an acronym for setting specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, and trackable goals. Having a goal of going to the gym seven days a week, when you are not going now, might be unrealistic. People should start with a smaller short-term goal, like going to the gym three days this week. That way they are still going to the gym, but not setting the bar too high. Weight loss goals often fall into this unrealistic category as well. Through proper nutrition and exercise, people should see from a half to two pounds of weight loss per week. Anything more than that is unsustainable. One pound of fat equals 3,500 calories, so having a 500-calorie deficit each day will yield one to two pounds of weight loss. The 500 calories can come from eating slightly less or from exercise. People should not make drastic changes to their diet, but instead, try incorporating more fruits and vegetables and replacing soda or energy drinks with water. Weight loss resolvers sometimes think that eating less will help, but it is important to eat every two to three hours to boost one's metabolism. Happy New Year!!! 5
