1 MAIN STREET MAGNET DECEMBER 2017 Main Street United Methodist Church North Main Street at Pinckney Street P.O. Box 656 Abbeville, SC Phone 864/ Fax 864/ Happy Holidays Happy Holidays! It s a polite salutation people give this time of year. Whether the person celebrates Christmas, Hanukah, et. al., the phrase covers all the bases! Recently, some Christians have taken offense at the greeting objecting that Happy Holidays is at the very least a bad attempt at political correctness and at worst an attack on the Christmas holiday itself. I would like to suggest to you that Happy Holidays is a perfectly Christian thing to say. Here is why. The word Holiday is simply the modern derivation of the word Holy Day(s), days which the Church set apart as days of celebration. There was generally no work and feasts were common on these days. This time of year, there are several Holy Days which the Church recognizes; All Saints Day, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, Epiphany, and The Baptism of the Lord. Some traditions add Watch Night/New Year s Day among others to the list. In a very real sense, these November - January days truly are Holy Days. Thus, Happy Holidays is more than an appropriate greeting and does not compromise Christian faith and witness. Plus, isn t saying Merry Christmas at the end of November sort of like wishing someone a Happy Birthday a month beforehand? Or like having a July 4 th bar-b-que in early June? But I digress I would invite you to not overthink this! Say Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, etc whatever! But understand that Christmas and all of these Holy Days are not about our greetings but the God who has come among us; Emmanuel. In my opinion, there are lots of ways which Christians can and do give in to the cultural norms in this season but saying Happy Holidays is not likely one of them. Happy Thanksgiving! Merry Christmas! Happy New Year! Happy Holidays! -Pastor Brian Thoughts From Our Pastor What is Inside Pastor s Thoughts 1 People to Remember 2 Prayer Requests 2 Joys and Concerns 2 United Methodist Women 3 United Methodist Men 3 Youth News 3 Meetings 4 Choir News 4 Healing Hands 5 Birthdays/Anniversaries 6 Acolytes this Month 6 Calendar 6 Scripture Readings 7 Nursery Schedule 7 Goodtimers 7 Other News 8-13 Page 1

4 Upcoming Meetings and Events Note from the Church Office January magnet Newsletter is due in the church office no later than Monday, December 18 th. The Church office will be closed on December 26 th thur January 2 nd. All information for the December 31 st,2017 bulletin is due no later than December 20 th. Administrative Council Our first 2018 Administrative Council meeting will be Thursday, January 18. Notes from the Choir In Thanksgiving for the Value of the Singing of our Great Methodist Hymns As we approach one of the Highlights of our Church Seasons, Christmas-tide, the joys and inspiration of our Sacred Music become more and more relevant. Perhaps we are often more carried-away by the tunes (which are lovely) and allow the text to become secondary. Beware of this practice! The words of our Hymns and Anthems are little Sermonettes that could, in many examples, stand alone as little sermons. The words and the music make our Hymns works of devotion to God through our corporate Praise. Our Anthems enable us to sing our praises to God with beauty and meaning. We should be thankful for the talents and special gifts shared by our Hymn-composers and our Sacred Poets whose talent and inspiration have afforded us volumes of Church Music of our God the greatest composer of all that is good. So, in retrospect, when we sing our Hymns and Anthems, the beauty and rhythm of the music carries and complements the truths and meaning of the lyrics. Our greatest Hymns are examples of this combination of artistic and sacred talents and inspirational devotion. Anglican Cleric, Charles Wesley, first made the acquaintance of the Moravians as missionaries on a boat to America. While there he met Peter Boehler, a Moravian Bishop, at some point in their friendship. Boehler remarked to Charles Wesley, If I had a thousand tongues, I would praise Jesus with every one of them. This phrase made a lasting impression on Wesley, who imposed it in the text of his Anthem. Let us also be thankful to God for those dedicated choir members who share their time and voices in singing their praises to God as they lead our congregational worship with devotion and praises. Tips for Coping with the Stress & Depression of Holidays Stress and depression can ruin your holidays and hurt your health. Being realistic, planning ahead and seeking support can help ward off stress and depression. Acknowledge your feelings. If you are feeling sad or lonely, express those feelings. It is ok to feel sad during the holidays. Reach out. Do something for others or get involved with holiday activities if you are feeling lonely or isolated. Be realistic. Don t expect the holidays to be perfect. Things change, families change and you may need to develop some new rituals to replace the old ones. Stick to a budget. Don t create undue financial stress by spending more than you can afford. Set a budget and stick to it. Hand make gifts or donate to a charity in the person s name. Plan ahead. Set a schedule and make lists so you won t leave everything until the last minute creating undue stress. Learn to say no. You can t do everything. Friends will understand. Don t abandon healthy habits. Try not to overindulge as it only leads to more stress and guilt. Eat the healthy snacks and don t go overboard on the sweets. Take time for yourself. When things are getting really hectic, take some alone time. Soak in the tub, take a nap or read. Do anything that relaxes you. Seek help or someone to talk to. Despite your best efforts, you may still find yourself feeling sad, anxious, unable to sleep, irritable, hopeless and plagued by physical complaints. Find a good friend, your pastor, or your family physician to talk with and seek help. Find time to laugh. Laughter relieves stress and depression. Watch comedies, read a joke book or funny stories.
